Airline Lost My Luggage with Propecia in It! – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

My baggage was lost on a recent trip and I was without my Propecia for 8 days. Would this relatively short period of time without the mediction cause any problems or loss of hair that wouldn’t have occurred otherwise. Thank you. I appreciate your time and dedication.

There is some tissue fixation that lasts about 1 week so I would think that you would be alright. If we were your doctors, we could send you some temporarily or call into a pharmacy near where you are for a temporary supply. Check with your doctor in the future if it happens again.

Propecia is Causing All of My Hair to Fall Out! – Balding Blog

7 months and 6 days and im seriously thinking of giving up on propecia. I am quite vein and when I seen my hairline had receded a tiny bit I decided to go onto propecia, I really wish I hadn’t, every day since month 3, my hair falls out, loads in the shower, loads on my pillow case and loads as I pull on my hair very slightly, propecia has without a doubt made it worse, I have just decided to take 0.5 instead of the 1mg i was taking to see what happens, if I continue shedding then Im getting off. I am 100$ convinced this made me worse, I have read its impossible and ive even been told by my doctor it doesn’t make it worse, but it has. I am jeopardising any chance I could have of a hair transplant, because the hairs that are falling out are all over, back and sides as well as the top, and for a transplant they take hair from the back and sides which are falling out rapidly. Why is this happening and what should I do? It’s so frustrating

There is no way for me to understand what is happening to you without an examination. What you are describing makes no sense unless your Propecia is counterfeit (a not uncommon problem). Sure, sometimes the medication might not show much benefits, but to make the hair fall out all over, including the donor area… that particularly makes no sense.

Basically, you need a good doctor to tell you what is happening and this can not occur over the internet.

What is “Buyer Beware”? – Balding Blog

Hello, my questions is about your terminology of “buyer beware”. That is you often say all these over the counter medicines are “buyer beware” does that indicate that you believe there are some non FDA approved supplements etc. that actually do work on an extremely small percentage of people. In essences have you ever seen someone benefit from any non FDA approved treatment?

The best example of an herbal that is popular for treating hair loss is saw palmetto. There is a suggestion that there are some positive hair effects, but without clinical studies you will not see me endorse it. I’d need to see the proof beyond isolated reports by anonymous people on the internet. I’ve yet to see a patient here that had positive hair loss treatment results from an over the counter supplement.

Expectations are everything and you don’t want to have your time wasted by trying new approaches over and over again with no value as you continue to lose your hair forever. Readers of this site and of course my own patients expect me to be straightforward and not point them in a direction that could be a waste of time when there are proven safe and effective medications. Hair loss is a progressive process and every man who has it and does not take proven medication is destined to be balder and balder over time. Safety is another issue and from time to time we see the FDA take a stand and get some product pulled from the market for safety reasons.

“Buyer beware” is just a reminder to be smart about what you’re buying. It’s a notice to folks to use common sense and be more cautious before wasting your money on some truly obvious scams. If some product claims 100% success in regrowing hair, don’t you think everyone would know about it? I’d have no reason for this site if just one of these garbage products had the 100% results that are claimed, because there would be your hair loss cure.

Hair Loss InformationDoes Stress Aggravate Hair Loss by Elevating DHT? – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Doctor,
I am turning 23 years old in May. I have noticed that I have been thinning on the back of my head around the vertex. The thinning seemed to have started this summer. After slightly noticing it, I asked my barber if he had noticed anything. He said that it has been relatively the same for the past 5 years that he has been cutting my hair. I have been monitoring the situation and noticed that it has thinned out a little bit more. Today when I got my hair cut, my barber said it seems to be thinning now. It is visible to me that I am most definitely thinning at the vertex especially after cutting it a bit shorter around that area. I have just entered pharmacy school and I am afraid that with stress elevated levels of DHT can affect my hair.

My question to you is, first, does stress aggravate hair loss by elevating DHT? Second, I would like to take Finisteride 5mg and cut it up into 4 pieces. That extra bit of Finisteride, is that ok? Lastly, should I use Minoxidil? My beef with that medication is that it is a vasodilator and I am afraid that I would have to use it forever, I would rather take Finisteride forever (or until I decide I just do not care). My hair loss is not noticeable; it looks like it is simply the separation of my hair. However, I know my own hair density. I believe Finisteride should be enough to at best stop any further thinning. Also, I can provide you with pictures if that would help. Thank you for your time and have a wonderful weekend.

I would doubt that stress is elevating DHT levels. Men with hair loss and thinning at the top/crown are mostly likely to have genetic male pattern baldness. Yes, DHT is one of the factors, but your genes are ultimately to blame. Chances are, the loss you’re seeing is coincidental to your entering pharmacy school.

If you cut a 5mg finasteride tablet into 4 pieces, that’s 1.25mg per day (if you get the pill cut perfectly)… and that’s ok. Ideally, cutting the 5mg pill into 5 pieces would be best, but getting 5 equal pieces would be extremely difficult. Using minoxidil with the finasteride is up to you. Some patients like both medications, but it could feel like a daily chore that you need to keep up with.

Taking Avodart Bi-Weekly To Avoid Propecia-Like Side Effects? – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

Dr. Rassman:

Prior to reading this, thank you for your time. Your insight and knowledge is of great appreciation.

My situation is as follows:

I started propecia, was on it for a month, then underwent a HT of 1,900 grafts mainly in the front hairline. I continued to use propecia for 2 more months and began to experience some serious sexual side effects. I stuck it out for another 3 weeks however the side effects continued so I stopped the propecia. The sad part is that the propecia began to halt my hairloss however I could not deal with the sexual side effects.

Sadly my hair is shedding. After another apt with my hair restoration doctor, he suggested I take Avodart 0.5mg twice/week. He had mentioned that some of his patients who were having side effects from Propecia took the Avodart bi-weekly, (due to the drugs long half life) and were able to halt hairloss but did not experience the side effects which I was experiencing from my daily 1mg Propecia regiment. I have read all of your posts in regards to Avodart and I understand that it is not FDA approved nor do you prescribe it to your patients.

My main question to you and issue at hand:

I know that when people start taking Avodart they experience a shedding phase which generally kicks in after the first month or two of starting the drug and can last a few months there after. My first question – If I am only taking the drug twice a week and have only been off of propecia for 4 weeks will I also experience a shedding phase? I am confident that the shedding phase is the transition to a greater good…as the weaker hairs fall out months later they are replaced by stronger, new hairs. My problem is that I am in the entertainment industry and will be starting a one month taping of a TV series from June 30th-July 30th. I would like to have as much hair as possible by that time so would I be better off waiting to take the Avodart after the taping is complete, or should I start now and hope that the avodart will not cause a drastic shedding phase and help me stabilize the hair that I currently have? I guess this really comes down to a game of timing.

It will be 5 months since my HT when the taping starts in June so I am hoping that the transplanted hair will already be popping up. Also, most of the hair that I am losing is from the front hairline and temples. The crown seems to be doing ok.

Thanks again for your time and I would also be interested in undergoing a transplant with your team following the taping.

I really do not have a clear answer to your situation. In general, Propecia or Avodart will not be as effective on your front and temple areas. They each work best on the top/crown areas of your scalp. I do not know if you will have more or less shedding as everyone has different results, different side effects, etc. Shedding isn’t seen by all men that start the medication. Really, only time will tell and there is no clear way to predict this.

It would be interesting to know if Avodart did indeed change your sexual side effect issues, as I would expect that it would not make it better. There’s not enough reported about Avodart dosing in the treatment of hair loss for me to suggest that bi-weekly pills are the way to go.

I Pull Out My Hair and My Doctor Recommended Propecia – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

hello doctor,
my hair is thin and i dont know if all the hair that falls out is because of the telogen stage. my family has no balding but my hair getting thinner and always falling out. i keep on pulling it out all the time and i am always stressed about it so i am all day pulling and freaking out. i went to a doc but she recommend me propecia right away. i dont know if i wanna be on a medication. what should i do? thanks!

Did you tell your doctor about your hair pulling before the Propecia was recommended? Propecia might help if you are a man with genetic hair loss, but it won’t stop you from pulling the hair out.

It sounds like what you’ve got is an obsessive compulsive disorder called trichotillomania. I’m not an expert on OCD, but a good place to learn more and seek treatment help is at the Trichotillomania Learning Center.

How Bad Could the Hair Loss Be After Stopping Propecia? – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Hello Dr.,
Thank you for answering all questions and thank you for this blog.

You have mentioned that catch up hair loss could be very dramatic after stopping propecia. Do you have any examples that you can provide us? (i.e a NW 2 going to a NW6).

Thank youFortune teller

Block Quote

Let’s say you now show a Norwood Class 3A pattern and have been on finasteride for 10 years. Upon stopping the medication your hair could remain the same… or you could begin to show progress to a Norwood Class 5, 6, or even a 7. The catching up of the hair loss just means you’ll go to the pattern you would’ve been had you never taken the medication in the first place. So what you are asking is a look into your future, but you’ll need to see an experienced gypsy for that.

Waiting Period If Switching from Propecia to Avodart? – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

After reading your blog, I understand your concerns over prescibing Avodart for hairloss. However, if someone were to make an informed decision to switch from Propecia to Avodart for hopefully better results, would you advise them to switch immediately or stop taking Propecia for a while before taking Avodart? Lastly, would the switch in medication return the user to stage one i.e. they would be starting to tackle hairloss all over again, or would the Avodart immmediately “follow up” or add to the effects of the Propecia in limiting DHT etc?

Block Quote

AvodartWhen switching from Propecia (finasteride) to Avodart (dutasteride), I wouldn’t think that any waiting period is needed. I’m not sure how informed your decision in switching medications is since dosing information hasn’t been established when taking Avodart to treat hair loss, but since both are prescription medications I’d hope these are things you and your physician have worked out. For those curious, you will not need to maintain the Propecia upon switching since Avodart is also a DHT blocker. The two medications work in similar ways, so I’d guess that it would just pick up right from where Propecia left off.

Hair Loss InformationI Was Told to Stop Finasteride 2 Weeks Before My Surgery – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Hi There,
I have had 2 procedures with a clinic and have been pretty happy with the results, however I seemed to lose a number of hairs due to (what I now know to be ) shock loss. The clinic manager advised that if I was taking finasteride then I was to stop doing so 2 weeks prior to the procedure. Is this normal advice as I thought you usually advised patients to take finaseride up until surgery to help prevent against shock loss.

Block Quote

You’re right to be skeptical, as this is not normal advice. I would be suspicious / curious to know why they would say that. Propecia is your best weapon against shock hair loss, the enemy of the transplant patient. There is no downside to taking the drug through the day of surgery. In fact, I encourage those that are taking Propecia to maintain their normal dosing before, during, and after the hair transplant surgery. I’d ask the doctor that prescribed you the medication, not the clinic manager, what he/she suggests.

Hair Loss InformationRogaine Causing Puffy Cheeks? – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Hi,

I’ve been using Rogaine consistently for over a year now. I haven’t had any obvious side effects or reactions from it and am completely healthy. However, I’ve noticed that over time, my cheeks don’t seem to match the rest of my body. In other words, I have a very low body fat content (I’m lean and in shape) but have big “chipmunk cheeks.” I’ve looked around and found people reporting similar experiences while on Rogaine. Could this be a side effect of the Rogaine? Have you heard anything about this before? If so, would there be a way of counteracting it? The ideas I’ve read thus far have suggested that it might cause water retention in the face or redistribution of fat. I’d appreciate any insights! Thanks!

Block Quote

Facial swelling is a known rare side effect possibly due to an allergic reaction of Rogaine (minoxidil), and we’ve reported on this before. Changing the dose or the formulation (like the use of foam rather than the liquid) may be helpful.
