Taking Finasteride and Giving Blood – Balding Blog

Hello Doctor,

With all of the terrible things happening in the world, I would like to give blood. However, I have been told that finasteride is not allowed in blood transfusions.

Are there any organizations for whom I can donate blood or plasma or platelets that can be used? It seems an awful shame that I can’t give blood while on proscar.

It seems as though I could stop taking it for a few days, give blood and then start up again, right? Or would it be possible to tag the blood as having finasteride and only transfuse it into male patients?

If you’re taking finasteride, blood donation is bad for recipient women who are pregnant due to the risk of birth defects… and that is why it is banned for blood donors. I don’t know about tagging the blood in the donation process. Finasteride users are supposed to wait at least a month after the last dose and dutasteride users should wait at least 6 months before donating blood.

There are other medications that take even longer, such as severe psoriasis treatment acitretin, which has a 3 year wait before you should give blood… and etretinate, which eliminates you from giving blood entirely.

Is 15% Minoxidil Too Much? – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

Is it okay to use 15% minoxidil, or is it too much for a good thing?

5% minoxidil is the recommended dose and I’d suspect that 15% would be a bit much, possibly causing more side effects (fainting from drops in blood pressure, more skin reactions, etc).

Is Elocon Safe to Use on Transplanted Hair? – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

Hello Doctor

this Elocon lotion is supposed to be massaged on the scalp topically in order to fight seb derm (a few drops per application, once a day for a few days)

Is it safe to use it on
a ) transplanted hair
b ) healthy non transplanted hair

Is there a hair loss risk , and if so , permanent or temporary ?

Thank you in advance

EloconElocon (mometasone) is a topical steroid and there is plenty of information on the Drugs.com site. It specifically states that Elocon can cause “swollen hair follicles”. Does this mean that you may lose hair? Well, the term swollen hair follicles is not one I am familiar with. Steroids applied to an area of hair loss can accelerate hair loss.

If I can provide some help it is that healthy non-transplanted hair is equal to transplanted hair. It is YOUR hair! I mean, that is one reason people get hair transplants and not wigs! So if a drug can harm your healthy hair, it can also harm your transplanted hair.

In the end, Elocon is a medication that needs to be prescribed by a physician. The use of topical steroids can be dangerous when not controlled by a doctor, so you need to discuss with your physician the risks and benefits of using such medication. Please do not read this as my trying to brush you off or not address your issues. My role here is limited and I give general opinions.

Rogaine Half-Life? – Balding Blog

Doc,

I read that Rogaine has a half-life of about 22 hours in skin. Assuming you have no side effects from applying it all at once, could you apply double the recommended amount once per day and have the same effect?

RogaineMinoxidil was originally a not-that-great oral high blood pressure medication called Loniten. The results varied in the treatment of high blood pressure and eventually the medication was turned into a topical after the hair growth side effect was noticed. The drug stays in the plasma for about a 4 hour half life, but on the skin it stays much longer with slow absorption suggesting that once a day application may be satisfactory.

I can not comment on the official use of twice a day application to the scalp, but clearly more of it will be used and sold with twice a day applications. If you double the dose and apply it once a day, the drop in blood pressure side effect becomes more prevalent.

How Can David Beckham’s Hair Look So Great Now? – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

I was wondering whether it is possible to go from miniaturization such as these pictures of david beckham (click both links): Beckham 1, Beckham 2

To a head of hair such as what he has now in 2010 which is in the link below (click link): Beckham 2010

My question is, beckham actually cant take finasteride as sports wont allow him to take the medication. How is it possible to go from quite severe miniaturization to a good head of hair. Also is not a wig or hair piece as he shaved his head off infront of a live audience. Is it possible to get the results that Beckham has some how and with what.

Thanks

David BeckhamI’ve written about David Beckham before, and I agree that his hair does look great now. A see-through look can have multiple causes:

  1. character — fine hair
  2. length — short hair
  3. presence of miniaturization if the thin look is mostly on the front and top

And if there is actual hair loss, it could’ve been from stress in his life or some other medical issue causing some early acceleration of genetic balding… or this whole thing could’ve been as simple as poor/unflattering lighting. It’s tough to tell how real his loss is based on photos from differing angles and light sources.

Can medication be completely ruled out? Finasteride was at one time banned in most professional sports, but the World Anti-Doping Agency has removed it from their prohibited drug list. I don’t know if that applies to the various soccer/football leagues.

Taking Propecia with Paxil? – Balding Blog

Hello

Thank you for this great site. I learn so much from here. Here is my question, SSRI drugs can cause hairloss as a side effect. Is this hairloss permanent and will taking propecia and a SSRI drug like paxil be beneficial in reducing the possibility of hairloss as a side effect of the SSRI drug?

thank you for the help.

Many drugs (including Paxil) can cause hair loss, but the hair loss from medication usually diffuse (not in a pattern). For the diffuse hair loss that occurs in women, the hair should grow back within about a year after stopping the medication. For men, taking Propecia (finasteride) will probably not protect against the hair loss that is caused by these medications.

Some people who feel that are losing hair from their drug may ALSO have androgenic alopecia. This is why you need to go see a doctor for a complete physical examination and a good diagnosis to distinguish the impact of the drug on the non-patterned component of the hair loss.

Should I Wait to Start Propecia — and How Much Should I Take? – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

I am 21 years old and noticed the hair on top of my head is thinning and is very easy to see the scalp when wet. Also have a little bit of a receding hairline and very small bald spot on the crown (can only really see when hair is wet). I am just wondering if I should wait a few years before starting propecia because i heard it loses its effects after a while? Also if I do start since it is not that bad yet should I take propecia everyday or every other day or any other sort of amount?

The dosing should be 1mg a day, but this is a prescription medication and I can’t give alternate dosing advice as I’m not your doctor. Talk to your physician about it.

If you’ve got male pattern baldness, Propecia (finasteride) works best when started early in the thinning process. You should not want to wait until you’ve lost a ton of hair before you start it as it might be less effective. If you start the medication earlier, it has a greater chance to halt the hair loss. As a 21 year old, the frequency of reversing the thinning and loss is some areas is much higher than if you wait 5 more years.

If I Stop Minoxidil, What Kind of Hair Loss Should I Expect? – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

I am 26 years old male and i’ve applied minoxidil once a day since age 21, but only in the two sides of my hairline where i had a problem, not in the rest of my hair. My father is totally bald. My treatment was taking place with some breaks, like 8-9 months treatment, 2 months stopping treatment. When i was stopping the treatment, the hair that was grown from minoxidil were falling out, and then after re-starting the treatment they were starting to grow again.

i have no sign of baldness in my crown, where i’ve never applied minoxidil. i want to ask you that if i stop using it at all, what kind of hairloss should i expect?

If you’re going to keep starting and stopping the medication, I don’t see the point in using it. If you stop using the medication completely, I’d expect any benefits that the minoxidil gave you will soon disappear. I don’t know what your hair loss pattern is or how much the medication was helping, so I have no way of knowing what kind of hair loss you’ll see. But if minoxidil regrew hair, that hair will fall out when you stop using it. Why are you playing Russian Roulette with your hair?

TeenAt the age of 19 and a Class 2 Norwood scale balding, you are not a candidate for surgery. If you are really balding, then you will have the appearance of miniaturization in the hair on your head. In that case, the drug finasteride is the best way to stop the balding problem in men who are balding in the earliest stage. Get a good doctor to review your personal situation and please do not have a surgery under any circumstances.

I’ve been getting a lot of similar emails from teens that want to take medication before they need to, or want me to tell them if they’re going bald based on 2 sentences they email to me. I’m going to make this as easy as possible for everyone to digest, and there’s no better way than an itemized list…

  1. You have a family history of hair loss, but that doesn’t necessarily mean you will experience loss to the same degree or at all. It can skip generations.
  2. Some refer to the corners of the hairline as the temples. Corner recession could be the maturing of the hairline. Recession of the actual temples will usually not see benefit from medication and surgery will likely be required to restore them.
  3. I can’t tell you when you should start on Propecia (finasteride), as it is a prescription medication and therefore must be prescribed by your physician. Generally speaking, you shouldn’t take medication as a preventive medication against hair loss anyway. Everyone is different, and some men will need the medication at 18 years old, while others will need it at 35. It depends on when you’re experiencing miniaturization and to what degree. A 25 year old man already showing thinning in the Norwood Class 7 pattern will not benefit from Propecia unless it is caught early and still it may not do much more than stop the loss from occurring.
  4. Propecia side effects are real, but they are also quite rare. Internet reports are unverified and overblown (some people will post the same basic negative messages over and over under different usernames across different sites). The major health concerns that you brought up (prostate and breast cancer) are worth considering, but more information needs to be collected. Studies into these types of issues might have been minimal, but the FDA lists the medication as safe and effective, and I’ve seen the effectiveness first hand (and have posted many photo results on this site).
  5. Get a good, caring doctor who has an interest in hair loss. Most often they build their expertise in the surgery of hair transplants, but there are many good doctors who care enough about their patients that they will not be trigger happy and rush you into a surgery before you are ready. Check the physician search at ISHRS to get started.

Could Finasteride Increase Muscle Mass? – Balding Blog

If Testosterone levels do go up by about 15% by taking finasteride could this drug increase muscle mass?

Doubtful. The slight increase in testosterone is very minor and only temporary.
