Total Hysterectomy and Hair Loss – Using Estroderm Patch and Nizoral – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Doctor I am a 51 year old female. I had a total hysterectomy last Oct. My hair has been thinning since. My doctor put me on a 0.05 estroderm patch and shampoo with nizoral shampoo 2 to 3 times weekly. My twin has not had a hysterectomy but has gone through the change and her hair is thinning significantly. What else should I do. As women, we would prefer not to be bald. Unfortunately our grandfathers on both sides were bald, so I am almost certain this is familial. What else should I be doing? This is very disturbing.

I found a good response on DocShop.com which states: “Hair loss may occur in patients who undergo major surgery. About three or four months after major surgery or a serious illness, patients may lose a large amount of hair. This type of hair loss is the result of stress associated with the illness, and the hair loss is often temporary. Hair loss is normal after major surgery, so it is important for patients to speak to their surgeon about this possible side effect before undergoing the surgery. If you would like to know more about hair loss after major surgery and ways to treat it, consult a hair restoration specialist.”

I agree that you need to see a hair specialist. Hormone manipulation can cause hair loss and aging is included. Balding on the male side of the family may not correspond to female hair loss and I would look to the female side of your family (mother, aunts, grandmothers, etc.) for some insight as to what may be in your future.

Can You Prescribe Dutasteride Over the Phone? – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Dr. Rassman,

First off, thank you very much for the time and effort you put into this blog. Also, I’m sorry some people don’t get your sense of sarcasm.

I was wondering what it would take for you to take me on as a distance patient. I am currently in between Norwood Class II and III I believe and my hair has noticable minaturization. I am
a 24 year old male in good health and would like to be on Dutasteride (sp?). Please, when you have a chance, contact me as soon as is convenient.

Thanks Very Much

If you cannot travel to our offices in California, please call my office at 800-NEW-HAIR (800-639-4247) to arrange a private phone consultation with one of our physicians. I do not prescribe dutasteride on a young man who has not given finasteride a chance to work. Some people report that dutasteride knocks down the sperm count, so what else will it do and is it reversible? We don’t know the answers to that yet, so why prescribe something that may not be safe when there is a good, safe, and effective medication (finasteride) out there for young men?

Is the FDA In Bed With Drug Companies? – Balding Blog

You keep talking about drugs with FDA approval, but it sounds like the FDA is in the pocket of the big drug companies. What is your thoughts on this?

MSNBC – New FDA drug center raises ethical questions

Interesting reading. I am not sure that I would say that the FDA is in bed with pharmaceutical companies in a conventional way, but hey, there’s conspiracy theories for everything.

Preventing Shock Loss By Taking Propecia – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

What is the minimum amount of time that a person should continue taking propecia after hair transplant surgery to prevent shock loss?

Do I have take propecia for months after surgery or just a few weeks, until everything has healed? If the answer is months, why would that be the case? Thank you for your help.

Block Quote

The earlier you start the drug before a hair transplant, the better it works for you. Ideally I might guess 2 months, but 2 weeks might work as well. I really don’t know for sure. I just know it works and for those people who were on it for 2 weeks, I still see the protective effect. I generally tell people to stay on the drug for 8 months minimum, but if there is a reason to stay on the drug permanently, then that is best.

Woman Grew Facial Hair After Using Minoxidil for 2 Weeks! – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Hi,
I’m a 27 yrs. old female experiencing hair loss for quite sometime. I started taking minoxidil 5% about 2 and a half months ago and noticed facial hair growth in 2 weeks. I stopped taking the medicine about a month ago but the facial hair hasn’t reversed yet. Is this side effect reversible and how long does it usually take to reverse the facial hair?

Block Quote

Minoxidil facial hair growth was seen in the days it was used for the treatment of high blood pressure. I am told that it does reverse slowly over time. I don’t have a definitive answer for you, though.

Should I Add Dutasteride (Avodart) to Finasteride (Propecia)? – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

I’ve been using propecia and rogaine for 9 months and feel like I have only slowed down the hair loss and not halted it. My main goal is to completely stop and maintain my hairline and current hair. I know that I haven’t waited the full 12 months but I am just curious. Would taking propecia 1mg with dutasteride .5 mg daily be the strongest combination with the best chances of maintaining my hair ? I feel great anxiety and fear of my hair loss and want to do everything I possibly can. Thankyou Doctor.

Adding Avodart to the Propecia dose may not benefit you, based on what we current know about Avodart. It is highly possible that you have reached the maximal benefit of the drugs. You must remember that hair loss does go in cycles, so playing with drugs and doses may not cause the changes you are seeing. These medications are not a cure for advancing balding, just a way of slowing the process down.

For Avodart to be really effective, I am told that 2.5mgs/day is the required does, but as the FDA studies are further along, we may learn differently about drug dosages. Doctors that are prescribing this medication off-label are recommending varying dosages to their parents. Meet with your doctor and develop a Master Plan as to what steps you are going to take.

Sometimes I Take Propecia in the Morning, Sometimes at Night – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

Dear Doctor

having been on propecia for the last seven months i can honestly say that i havnt had a strict time when i take it. Sometimes in the morning, sometimes at night. But i have not missed a day since i started taking it. Will this have any effect on how it works?

Kind regards

I generally like the drug for the morning when testosterone levels are highest. It probably does not make a difference, but why not be logical about it?

Minoxidil 5% in the Morning, 15% at Night – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Dr. Lee from Regrowth says that the response to minoxidil is dose dependent, so taking 5% twice a day is really just going to hold the hair you already have. Thats why he is suggesting to take 5% in the morning and 15% at night. The solutions also contains azelaic acid, which he says inhibits 99% of DHT in the scalp. So there is no need for proscar, but it can sometimes help, also in conjuction with spironolactone 2% or 5%. What do you guys think?

Block Quote

High dose minoxidil (15%) applied topically can cause systemic side effects such as a life threatening drop in blood pressure or fainting from low blood pressure. I guess if you take it at night before you hit the bed, you wouldn’t really have to worrying about the fainting part because you are lying flat. All joking aside, there is no proven combination of drugs that stops hair loss completely. If it works, then I suppose your Dr. Lee will be a very rich man. It seems DHT is a buzzword and everybody jumped on the bandwagon claiming that Product X, Product Y, and Product Z all block DHT.

I just returned from the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery (ISHRS) conference in Las Vegas, where hair loss experts convened to discuss the latest in hair loss technology. Nothing was mentioned about 15% minoxidil or azelaic acid as a substitute for finasteride. Azelaic acid is an acne medication.
