Finasteride is Banned in Sports – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

I currently use propecia and need to know how long it takes to be out of your urine. If one was getting tested for anabolic steriods the finasteride cannot be in the urine because it is banned

I am not familiar with the testing of finasteride in the blood stream or the intricacies of exactly what chemical they are looking in the testing. I do know basic drug dynamics and the mechanism of finasteride. The half life of finasteride is 8 hours. This means if you took it at 7am, 50% will be in your body by 3pm. Then 25% will be in your body by 11pm, etc. I think you get the picture.

Now this is if you took one pill of finasteride only once, but I suspect you have been taking finasteride for a good while. This means that your body has a steady state of finasteride bound by proteins circulating in your blood (you can think of it as a reservoir). So it may be a bit more complex than just a half life value. I read an article on the web that says it takes 4 weeks for finasteride to bring DHT levels back to 20% baseline. I have no way of validating this claim, but you can use it to make an informed decision.

Propecia for Diffuse Thinning? – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

Is Propecia effective for one such as myself who has “diffuse” thinning all over the top scalp? I’m 19 and I been on the drug for a little over 3 months and I still shed is this normal? Should I give it more time to work?

Some people thing that in a limited number of individuals, the cycling of the hair growth moves in and out of its anogen phase. Prior to the anogen phase, there is often hair loss. This means that the loss may be an indication that you will have a good response when anogen comes into play. Without seeing the miniaturization of your hair under a densitometer (microscope) and your particular hair loss pattern, there is no way to answer this question. I generally like to count hairs, those that are miniaturized and those that are full normal hairs. That tells me where you are starting from when you go on Propecia. Good measurements of hair counts and miniaturization tells me a great deal about your response and puts good science and diagnosis in my hands. You need a good hair transplant doctor or Dermatologist to evaluate your hair loss pattern to see if Propecia is the right medication for your condition.

Avodart and Female Genetic Hair Loss – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

One of my friend’s doctors has prescribed Avodart for her thinning hair. Is this effective? If so, why do I not hear more about it? Can I get your to prescribe it as I am in Los Angeles?

See Effective treatment of female androgenic alopecia with dutasteride

One case does not say much about this process, but it may provide a little hope. There is no significant documentation for breast, ovary, or uterine cancer predispositions with DHT blockers. That is worrisome without a good controlled study in hand. We know that one side effect of this medication in men is breast enlargement (one in about 300 men), so the question of safety is paramount in the decision to provide this drug to women. Even for men, there are no long term studies to suggest that this drug is safe for the younger men. Any woman taking this medication while pregnant runs a high risk of producing a hermaphrodite baby (without a normal penis or vagina). This tells you a great deal about what we do not know. I will not prescribe this medication for women, and I have been very forthright against using it without adequate safety issues addressed in the proper way. I worry that articles like this, which show a single example that could be a chance occurrence having little to do with this medication, can be ascribed to the drug. Please don’t rush to your doctor or the internet and use this as a panacea for your hair loss problem, for it could just open a Pandora’s Box. I would be happy, on the other hand, to have you visit me for a diagnosis and an opinion.

Generic Propecia? – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

I ordered generic propecia from a website that seemed to be the cheapest. They claim to be FDA approved, so i was wondering if infact there generic propecia is the same as regular propecia.

I have been taking generic propecia for about 2 weeks now. Since ive been taking it I have been getting alot of acne and i was wondering if propecia may be causing it

It is a buyer beware market. I am not aware of a generic Propecia available in the United States, since it is still under patent protection. Some other countries who do not respect patent laws may attempt to copy a drug formula, but I do not believe the FDA would approve of such practice. There is no way for me or anyone to tell if your side effect is a direct result of your generic drug. Finally, you need a qualified doctor to prescribe Propecia, so I would certainly be nervous about ordering prescription drugs like this online from a website you are not familiar with.

Can I Eliminate The Greasy Feel After Rogaine Use? – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

I have been using Rogaine unsuccessfully for a number of years. One problem I have with it is that I only apply it after taking a shower and never do a second daily application. The reason for this is that unless I dry it with a hair dryer the Rogaine always makes my scalp look greasy.

Is the hair dryer detrimental to the Rogaine working? What can I do to eliminate the greasiness?

To get real value from it, you must use it twice daily. Change to Rogaine for Women, as it has an alcohol base which is not oily.

Taking 1.25mg of Finasteride Daily – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

Dr. Rassman,

I have been taking finasteride for 1 month. I have quartered proscar tablets. Given that the doses are therefore 1.25 mg of finasteride each I have been taking the pills for fours days straight and then taking one day off. This way I receive 5 mg in my body over five days just like with propecia. Can this skipping a dose have an effect of the drug’s effectiveness? Also, I plan on switching to the regular 1 mg dose of propecia every day once my 30 tablet proscar supply finishes (so roughly five months). I assumed the transition will be smoother with my current dose technique then if I was taking 1.25 every day and then switched to 1 mg per day. My main reason for skipping the 5th 1.25 mg dose is to reduce the chances of side effects. After two weeks of use I experienced some tenderness in one of my breasts but thankfully that passed after one week and I feel perfectly fine now. My worry is that an increased amount of finasteride in my body would increase the chances of such effects returning. Any thoughts you can give in regards to my concerns would be appreciated.

Thank you.

You need to have it on board every day. Don’t worry about side effects if you do not experience any now at the dose you are taking. The breast pain is a rare side effect (1 in 300 patients), so if it has passed, just count your blessings.

Am I Too Old for Propecia or Rogaine? – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

I had many transplant procedures several years ago. In fact, the last one was about 6 years ago. I have very little donor area left so am considering Rogaine and or Propecia. At 43, is this too late? Also, can I combine the two aforementioned medicines?

Thanks!

The best way to answer that question is to determine just what of your original hair population is still left. If there is some original hair, then Propecia (for men only) may help. Rogaine (minoxidil) may get some of the hair growing when Propecia does not. At age 43, that is still having enough hair or hair ‘buds’ to see regowth from either (or both) of these medications. If you do not try it, you will never know. For a man, I might try Propecia first (for 8 months or so), then add on minoxidil. If you separate the timing for starting each medication, you will know better what is working. Get a good doctor, have him/her analyze your situation and do not treat this blindly. My heart goes out for you, but you need a Master Plan even at this late stage in your process.

Using Minoxidil 6 Weeks After Transplant – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

dear Dr. Rassman,

i am a 45 year old man. i had HT about 6 weeks ago. all the crusts have gone. i have started using Rogaine and Proscar. I wash my hair almost everyday. i start noticing that some of the transplanted hair fall out, and my transplanted area looks patchy. you said that shedding is not common for older men who are using Proscar. is my case unusual? will the hair grow back evenly?

also, minoxidil causes redness and itchy. suddently some of the grafts start bleeding, eventhough i did not touch them (just pour water on the head). is this serious? i am losing the grafts?

please kindly respond. your blog is really helpful.

Minoxidil can cause irritation and it is not necessary in your case, so stop it for a few weeks and observe if this solves the bleeding problem. You need your doctor to examine your scalp looking for things like folliculitis which can cause bleeding and itching, patchy hair loss, and shedding. If you do not have folliculitis and is treated succcessfully, then everything should work out in the next few months (assuming that you had a good doctor who did his job correctly). Speak with your doctor face to face when you get examined. Try to connect with him/her.

Mesotherapy and Hair Loss – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Dr. Rassman:
I am a 37 year old female and I’ve had a thinning/ balding spot on the crown of my head since I was in my early twenties. It hasn’t really spread too far over the years and my hair is rather thick elsewhere, so I’m able to hide it by keeping my hair long, clean, and recently using cover up products have helped as well. I’ve tried Rogaine 2% for about a year with no success except excessive facial hair, so I stopped. I’ve tried revivogen and developed scalp irritations, so didn’t stay on it for long. I currently use the laser comb, but no noticeable results thus far. I think genetics/stress/hormones played a part in the thinning, but moreso I think I can attribute it to traction alopecia as well.

I developed gray hairs at a very young age, 9 years old, and I recall my sister plucking them out for me sessions at a time. Also, the genetics factor hasn’t kicked in yet for my brother and sister, both of whom have a full head of hair, so that is why I’m lead to believe that it’s moreso due to traction alopecia.

I’ve signed up for a private consultation already and am hoping hair transplantation can help my problem, if nothing else can. However, I did come across another procedure called mesotherapy which makes claims for hair growth. Would you have any opinions on this procedure? I don’t know what else I can try.

Block Quote

Mesotherapy, as I understand it, is simply the injection of chemicals into the layer of fat (mesoderm) below the skin in order to address ailments. There are no scientific studies showing mesotherapy will help in treating hair loss, and without knowing exactly what chemicals a doctor is injecting, the potential for dangerous side effects exists.

For example, if a doctor was to inject a DHT blocker directly into the layer of fat under your scalp, is that going to be more effective than taking a DHT blocker in pill form? And since you are a female, is it wise to have a DHT blocker that is not recommended for use in females in your system? Make sure that whatever you choose, you know what you are getting, and that your doctor adheres to the highest standards of reputable medicine.
