Hair Loss InformationNew to Hair Loss – Which Products Work? – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Hello,

I currently think I’m in the early stages of hereditary baldness. I have recently been researching if there is any products I can use early to prevent it from getting worse. Is there any products you would recommend?

I have recently read a about a product called “Profollica” which seems to have legit reviews but I’m skeptic. What is your opinion? Will this product work? I have also read about a product called “Procerin” & “Provillus”. Do any of the above products work?

I have Also red websites that have Said to get plenty of calcium in your Body as this helps the hair folicle. Your advise would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

There are 2 medications that are proven to work — finasteride (Propecia) and minoxidil (Rogaine). Minoxidil is available in a generic form and over the counter, so it may be included in various products sold in stores as boutique brands. These brands are sometimes mixed with vitamins that likely won’t help treat your hair loss (particularly if your loss is due to genetic causes). Propecia is still a prescription medication and you’ll need to talk to your doctor about it.

As for the products you mentioned, if they contain finasteride or minoxidil they’ll probably help to some degree. If not, there’s no scientific proof that they’ll do what they claim. I’m sure I’ve written about each of them before if you use the search box in the top right of the site. Also, calcium won’t prevent genetic hair loss.

Applying Rogaine Twice Daily – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Rogaine recommends applying twice daily but it does not say it needs to be every 12hrs. Does that mean I can apply it at 8pm then again at midnight and that would be just as effective as morning and night? Thanks in advance

Equally spread applications twice a day (every 12 hours) is better than an 8 and 16 hour schedule, but it is not practical for most people. I would try to space it out a little more than the 4 hour window you described. Usually it is applied when you get up and then again before you go to bed (just allow it to dry first).

Hair Loss InformationDid Propecia Increase My Body Hair? – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

I have been on propecia for about 18 months and I it seems to have done good things for my hair. However, I noticed that I have more body hair than before. My arms are more hairy, and so is my nose and ears. Is this a known side effect?

Block Quote

I think I’ve gotten only a few emails over the years about seeing increased body hair after taking Propecia, but that is not a known side effect. I do hear anecdotal stories of decreased body hair from Propecia probably a little more often.

Female Hair Loss from Wellbutrin – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

I believe Wellbutrin (an antidepressant) has caused my thinning hair. I’ve read that wellbutrin increases testosterone (DHT) in women. What could I use to block the DHT or stop it so I can continue using this medication which works well for me.

Thank you

Block Quote

WellbutrinHair loss in women is a bit more complex than in men, as women tend to have other medical issues such as low-thyroid hormone levels, hormonal changes, and even anemia that can impact hair. We created a partial list of female hair loss causes here.

That being said, Wellbutrin (and many other antidepressants) is known to cause hair loss, though I’m not clear if the reason for this is due to increased DHT production. I did find one site that says, “It is believed that the increased dopamine function due to Wellbutrin may lead to an increase in the testosterone levels. This in turn causes over production of DHT, a metabolite of testosterone, which can be the reason for hair loss.” The problem I’m having is that I can’t seem to find any study backing that up, nor can I find any other sites discussing it. I am not discounting the information completely, but if I can’t find science to corroborate these claims I’m not going to entertain them as true.

You should talk to your doctor about it, who may know more since he/she prescribed the medication. Similarly, if someone out there knows of a study showing a link between Wellbutrin (bupropion) and DHT, please pass it on my way.

I’ve Seen Significant Hairline Recession Since Starting Finasteride Last Week – Balding Blog

Hi, I’d like to start by thanking you for your blog. I’ve been reading since for around 4 months since I first suspected I may be balding. I’m 20 years old and have long, thin hair. Because it is thin and I have always had a fringe I fear it is more noticable. My father is bald and my brother has also always had thin hair, but he doesn’t seem to be suffering any loss despite being 2 years older than me.

I have been on Finpecia for just over a week and have noticed significant thinning of my hairline above my forehead. I was wondering if it was normal for it to accelerate so quickly after starting to take the pills? Is it normal for my ’shedding period’ to commence this quickly? Also, I know it probably varies from person to person but I was wondering if you could give me any idea as to how much hair I should expect to lose during this period? Do people actually lose ALL their hair during this period?

Thank you.

RainyLet’s say you were visiting Los Angeles and when you arrived, it started raining and kept doing so for nearly a week straight. You might then conclude that L.A. is a rainy city. Of course, Los Angeles generally gets around 15 inches of rain per year, so you really can not tell anything by looking at just a week of weather. The same analogy applies for your hair loss experience.

Your issue is not normal and I highly doubt it is related to a medication, as you have been on it only ONE week! If anything, it’s possible that you’re just paying more attention to your frontal hairline and are noticing what was always there (or not there).

I Think Propecia Has Thinned My Facial and Body Hair – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Hello, I have been on propecia for 20 months, never missed a dose. My hair line is intact but hair has continued to thin all over. My presentation is very much that of DUPA in my opinion. My eyebrows, facial hair and body hair have all thinned since the start of this medication. If I titrate down to 1mg propecia every other day will I see facial hair come back as it once was? If I completely stop propecia what can I expect? I don’t feel I have gained much from it approaching the two year mark. I am 35 with no past medical history. Mother is extremely thin, dad is now going bald in the crown. What should I do? Thanks

I think you might not be on the right track, as you seem confused about what is going on with your body. I highly recommend that you see a physician or follow up with your doctor who prescribed the drug for you.

Propecia is the brand name of a drug called finasteride in 1mg strength, so I do not understand what you mean by when you ask about titrating it. Propecia doesn’t treat diffuse unpatterned alopecia (DUPA)… nor does it cause it. Also, Propecia shouldn’t impact body hair or beard hair.

If you completely stop the medication, you’ll see any benefits disappear in what we refer to as “catch-up” hair loss. Your hair loss would catch-up to the pattern it would be at if you’d never taken the medication. If you haven’t gained much visually from the regrowth side of things, it’s possible the medication just kept your loss from progressing. Again, talk to your doctor.

3 Weeks After Quitting Smoking, I am Seeing a Lot of Hair Loss – Balding Blog

I first noticed I was going bald about 2 years ago (at 22)and I immediately began researching and decided on Minoxidil, starting using it and got a fairly heavy shed. It all grew back plus some and the amount of hair I lost per day dramatically reduced (5 hairs compared to 40). I was sent abroad for a few months and spilled a bottle and could not order any more while there so went 2 months without it.

I changed to a purer brand and got some very impressive results after a couple of weeks with a shed about the same as the first. Now 3 months on I have quit smoking (3 weeks at this stage) and in the last week my hair loss has been huge! Im losing 5X more in the shower, 5x more on the pillow every morning! I know the blood circulation will be improved sending more nutrients etc to the hair so im not surprised the thin hairs are falling out BUT 40% of the hair is thick black hairs! Could this just be a shift to the growing phase or should I get the razors ready?

There’s really no reason for your hair loss to continue because of your quitting smoking. To suggest that smoking cigarettes kept your hair loss at bay doesn’t make any sense. If you’re experiencing accelerated loss, I’d expect it to be likely just a coincidence to when you stopped smoking.

Were the older minoxidil and new “purer” minoxidil both the same strength? I can’t tell you what’s going on, as I haven’t any way to determine that via the web… but visit your doctor to get down to a proper analysis of your problem.

Hydroxyzine Caused My Hair Loss to Stop – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Hey Dr. Rassman
I am a 23 year old male, with no family history of MPB, who was diagnosed with MPB in October of 2009 and was immediately prescribed Propecia. However the Propecia didnt really seem to have any effect on my hair loss. That is however until I was prescribed Hydroxyzine for unrelated skin autoimmune condition in May of this year. Immediately upon taking Hydroxyzine I began to notice I wasnt losing any hair when I showered or when I put hair product in.

So my question to you is what type of effect, if any, could the Hyrdoxyzine be having? Also is it possible that my hairloss is actually caused by an autoimmune condition rather than MPB? And if so, how do I get the real cause of my hairloss properly diagnosed? Thank you for your time

Block Quote

I do not know how hydroxyzine is connected to hair loss issues. Hydroxyzine is an antihistamine, much like diphenhydramine (commonly known as Benadryl). The fact that you notice some association with hair may be a coincidence. I believe what you are experiencing is almost certainly true, but I do not have a medical explanation. Have you discussed this with the doctor that diagnosed you with MPB?

Just to be clear to everyone, hydroxyzine is NOT used for MPB or hair loss issues.

Itchy Scalp from Finasteride? – Balding Blog

hi Dr Rassman, I’ve been taking Finasteride since Apr 09 and would have to say, I haven’t seen any improvement. If anything, its gotten thinner, along with a case of scalp itch (no dandruff) in and around my hairline. Is that a known side affect of the drug? I’ve seen people suggest it could be new hair growing? That would be nice, but i’d rather see it than feel it. I don’t even like being in pictures any more. I’m seeing a dermatologist in a couple of weeks, but would really appreciate your thoughts.

Itchy scalp isn’t a side effect of Propecia (finasteride) as far as I’m aware. Perhaps you’ve got something unrelated going on that your dermatologist should be able to diagnose.

I’m not sure what area of your scalp that you’re looking at or where you’re losing hair, but Propecia does not generally regrow hair in the frontal areas (it can happen, but it’s rare). It might be slowing the loss down, but not stopping it completely. You’ve been taking the medication for over a year and a half, so hopefully your prescribing physician will have some better insight into whether there has been any success for you while taking Propecia.

Hair Loss in the Crown – Genetics or Dreadlocks? – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Hey, I’m 22 and worried about hair loss. I noticed my hair thinning out in the crown area when I had dreadlocks, which I have since cut off after seeing a dermatologist. I don’t experience a great deal of hair loss, but the crown area has thinned out a bit and is more noticeable in bright lights.

I have purchased minoxodil (which the dermatologist said was optional) but am yet to start using it as I wanted to watch my progress in case if I didn’t actually need it. Advice?

Block Quote

DreadlocksI don’t know anything about your hair loss history, but early crown hair loss is typical of male pattern baldness, which means it may be caused by your genetics. The loss you’re seeing could be unrelated to the dreadlocks. Then again, the dreadlocks wouldn’t be helping the situation, as you’re running the risk of developing traction alopecia.

Minoxidil does work for some in the crown, but I’ve found that Propecia for young men with early loss (particularly in the crown) works even better. Both Propecia and minoxidil are optional (they are for treating a cosmetic issue, not to save your life), but if you want to save your hair, the option you’ll want to try becomes clear. I assume you want to treat your thinning crown, or you wouldn’t have written to the BaldingBlog.

So if your dermatologist saw early crown loss, I’m a little surprised you weren’t prescribed Propecia… though again, I’m not your doctor and don’t know about your hair loss history. Perhaps there’s something else that I’m not aware of at play.
