Hello there doctors

I was having my haircut when my hairdresser pointed out a bald spot just on the left of my crown, there is only one at this time, the size of a pea, its smooth, slightly raised and feels tough. She said it has about 10-15 hairs sprouting through and can see small holes where follicles are. I am 18 with a juvenile hairline and no signs of miniaturisation. 2 years a go my GP said i had a keratin horn near that location but he has since retired, could you shed some light on what the possibilities may be?

A pea-sized, slightly raised bald spot where 10 to 15 hairs are sprouting? I have no clue what it could be. If your physician has retired, I’d seek out another physician for an exam. Perhaps a dermatologist would be your best bet. Based on your description though, it does not sound like male pattern balding.

So for about 4 months I’ve had to bald spot on lower right cheek. the bald spots were very smooth but now I fill little and blond hairs sprouting up. What caused this? Is it stress or alopecia or cancer? What can I do ?

Doubtful that it is cancer. It could be stress induced or it could be alopecia areata, but it’s impossible to say without an exam. I’d really doubt it is life-threatening or anything to be concerned about in regards to your overall health. See a dermatologist if you’re looking for a more direct reason as to why spots appeared in your beard.

The best I can tell you is that the overall moustache hair cycle runs between 2-6 months. The telogen (resting) phase follows the fall out of the moustache hair lasts up to 2 months. All hair is likely to fall out as it cycles.

I know a question like this has been answered many times before, but I have a slight variation in the question concerning baseball caps and hair loss. My job (part-time) requires me to wear a hat and I have to wear it for about 5-8 hours straight each shift. I keep it a little bit loose so it doesn’t cause a cut off in circulation, but my question is, sometimes I adjust my hat, for example take it off and put it back on or shift it around a little bit.

I’ve read on other sites that putting your hat on/taking it off if you do it often/a few times can cause hairs to pull out/fall out. I do not know if there is any truth to these sources, so I am asking a professional. Is there ANY risk of thinning by wearing a baseball cap for long periods of time 3-4 times a week?

Also, how about hair nets, do they cause any damage/thinning to your hair?

If the hat is not pulling on your hair, taking it off and putting it on over and over again should not cause any impact. Same goes for hair nets.

Basically, if something is tugging on your hair for extended periods of time, that is when you run the risk of developing traction alopecia, which is commonly seen in women with tight braids.

I read a recent post on your blog and it got me thinking.

-Propecia usually does work on the crown.
-Propecia usually doesn’t work on the hairline.
-Propecia blocks DHT.

Is there a posiibility that the genetics of frontal balding and crown balding are different?

-The baldness on the crown is more dependant on adrogens then frontal baldness.
-Maybe crown baldness is more of a result of the androgen receptor mutation then frontal baldness.

It’s just some random thoughts.

Genetics for front balding and crown balding are different, and there is a Norwood classification to describe the differences.

I suspect there are some differences in how the DHT affects the crown versus the front, but I do not think it has anything to do with mutations as you suggest. I think we have not completely solved all the mechanisms of why we bald, and I’m suspicious that much of the different rates of balding has to do with the length of duration of the balding process.

So far only DHT (dihydrotestosterone) is recognized as the hormone that relates to balding, but it does not mean it is the only hormone related to balding. I suspect there are other discoveries to be made.
