Can You Tell How Bald a Thinning Area of Scalp Will Get? – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

If you start thinning in an area, does that mean that eventually that area will go completely bald or do some people thin to a certain percentage of orginial density and then it stops thinning and becomes stable? Is there any way of finding out how bald a particular area will go, even with a miniturisation test?

Yes, some people will thin to a percentage of their original density and then their hair loss stabilizes. There is no way to predict absolutely how much thinning will occur, but miniaturization mapping over time will give you some kind of idea… and taking medications like Propecia will slow the process down (for men).

Depilatory Cream for Facial Hair? – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

hi doc,

just a question not relating to hairloss if you dont mind. I suffer from sensitive skin, spots and ingrown hairs when shaving. i have used oils, creams, lotions and different style razors to no use. I’m just wondering is there any type of facial depilatory cream for mens facial hair out there?

Nair Sensitive FaceYour sensitive skin may react the same to these depilatory creams, but you can keep experimenting.

I don’t know much about hair removal creams, but a quick Google search shows that Nair makes a cream for use on the face that you could try, or I just found a new facial hair remover for sensitive skin that might be better for you. I hope that helps.

Minoxidil Just Stimulates Growth, Right? – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

Dear Dr. Rassman, my question concerns minoxidil. I have been using propecia for 3 months to treat the slow progression of a receeding hairline. I realize that it is too early to tell if it has been effective so only time will tell. Obviously, i want to maximize my chances of maintaining my hairline at its present state and want to feel like i am doing everything possible to ensure this. I have mild minaturization of hairs along the frontal and temporal hairline and am wondering if i should additionally use minoxidil to try to restore these hairs to a cosmetically viable state.

As i understand it, propecia is a DHT inhibitor and will act to maintain the hair you have and not regrow it. Minoxidil on the other hand, is a growth stimulant? is this correct? What i really want to know is, in your expert opinion and experience, would combining a topical application of minoxidil to the hairline be worth it? or will propecia restore the minaturized hairs- if indeed i am a responder?

thank you so much

Many doctors recommend the use of both Propecia and minoxidil at the same time. I tend not to do this, because it would addict the miniaturized hairs to minoxidil, possibly unnecessarily. Plus, if you do see hair regrowth while using both medications, you won’t truly know which one is showing the benefits and will essentially be stuck using both forever, for fear of stopping one and losing benefits. It is possible that both will give you benefits, though.

Minoxidil will not impact normal hair and as such will not stimulate it in any way. Combining the two could be worth it, but it’s ultimately up to you.

In the News – Heart Attack Genes? – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

Snippet from the article:

Researchers spanning three continents have pointed the finger at nine flawed genes after carrying out the largest-ever trawl through human DNA to search for inherited risks of a heart attack.

Variants of genes located in chromosomes 2, 3, 6, 12 and 21 boost the risk of myocardial infarction, according to five studies published online on Sunday in the latest issue of the journal Nature Genetics.

Identifying the culprits could open up new drug targets for people at risk, targeting inflammation by the immune system, adhesion between cells and other molecular mechanisms.

No, it’s not a hair loss related news item… but it could potentially be huge news and I found it worth sharing.

Zymo Hsor – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

Hi Dr Rassman

My question it’s about new approach of treatment. Have you heard about Zymo Hsor (used in Kaidax), or the options to use lotions with finasteride and flutamide with liposomes to enlvolve the drugs? Well, let me start describing the Zymo Hsor. It’ s a enzyme able to destroy DHT on the scalp. It’s manufactured on Italy. A brazilian Dr, that I know, likes Zymo Hsor and have formulas that use in liposome.

A transdermic gel aor foam with finasteride and flutamide in liposome forms it’s also used to reduce topical DHT. This brazilian Dr recomends to first use Zymo Hsor to destroy topical DHT, and then apply the gel of Finasteride an flutamide. The finasteride topical would reduce the DHT formation, and the remaining DHT would compete with flutamide for the androgens receptos. As the final result the DHT that would link to androgen receptors would be much less.

There are studies suggesting that retioic acid enhance minoxidil effect, and also studies that clains B-12 vitamin increase the effect of minoxidil. One study show that minoxidil with retinol and 0,1% of finasteride resulted in a much higher percentage of people with regorw, when compared to people that only used minoxidil. Propecia reduces more DHT on blood, but not much topical DHT. So I believe would be a fine approach if we use topical lotions to attack DHT, combined with the oral propecia.

I would like to heard your opinion about

Regards

I haven’t heard of Zymo Hsor, but lots of claims are made of various products and I am posting your comments to show the general inexhaustible approaches to the balding problem, your Brazilian doctor in particular. There is no evidence that topicals will work as you suggested here, but let the reader beware as he reads your post and researches it to his heart’s delight. I have no further knowledge to base an opinion on.

There’s this post at HairLossHelp about Zymo Hsor that doesn’t reveal much more than what you described in your email above, and I’ve written about flutamide gel before.

Stress-Induced Bald Spot? – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

My husband is 33 years old. He recently noticed a bald spot on the right side of his head. At first it was the size of a dime and now it is the size of a quarter. There is no lump or bump in that area. He does not smoke or drink or use any kinds of drugs, but he does work in the refinery business here in South Texas. Could that be a concern? And I know they say with women, stress can cause hair loss, I would assume the same goes for men.

There are many causes of hair loss such as you describe. I would have your husband seek out a dermatologist. I doubt that stress has anything to do with the problem, but without an examination I couldn’t determine that.

Accutane and DUPA – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Is there a link between past accutane use and DUPA? I took accutane when I was 17 and again at 22 for cystic acne. My hair started thinning at 23 and now at age 30, I was told by a doctor I have DUPA. If not the accutane, then maybe the DUPA is linked to the same reason I have had cystic acne for 15 years?

Block Quote

Anything is a possibility, but I doubt there are real causation relationships at play here. One may postulate that Accutane produced more diffuse hair loss mimicking DUPA (diffuse unpatterned alopecia), but you are trying to find answers and explanations to a problem and your guess is as good as mine. DUPA is not related to Accutane use to my knowledge, nor, I believe, that acne is related to hair loss.

Bad Nutrition and Sleep Patterns — Now I’m Losing Hair in the Permanent Zone – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

Hi doc,
I appear to be losing miniaturized hairs throughout the permanent zone. The onset of which has coincided with extremely bad nutrition, bad sleeping patterns, and stress that needs to quelled by Xanex. What is happening here?

This is too complex of a case for the quick description you’ve emailed… and I am not your doctor. If you’re already taking prescription Xanax (alprazolam), you should discuss the hair loss with your doctor.
