Water and Hair Loss – Balding Blog

I am curious to know whether water would be an issue in hair loss. I am currently in Spain. I have been here since September and am not coming back to the states till August. I recently started taking generic finasteride at the beggining of this month should I be concerned about water and its pertinence towards hair loss, as well would the 5mg generic finasteride have exactly the same ingredients as the propecia?

Unless there is something I do not know about the water in Spain, it should not be a cause of hair loss.

Generic finasteride in 5mg strength is FIVE times more potent than Propecia, which contain 1mg of finasteride. Thus, if you are using finasteride in 5mg strength you should cut it (ideally in 5 pieces, but realistically in 4 pieces) to make 1mg of finasteride. Taking 5mg finasteride at once is NOT more effective than taking 1mg of finasteride for treating hair loss. In fact, you may have an increase in the incidence of side effects.

Hair Loss InformationNo Visible Hair Loss, But I Can See My Scalp When My Hair Is Wet – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Dear Doctor Rassman,

I am a 25 year old male. I have a Norwood 1, so no thinning at the crown or at the temples. My hairline is about the same as when i was 17. My hairdresser always tells me I have very thick hair (she even thins it out sometimes) I lose about ten hairs a day when brushing and in the shower. My father and grandfather mothers side are not bald and neither are my other male family members.

You might wonder, why is he writing?

I’m really curious. When my long (well medium length) brown hair gets wet, I can see some skin. No bald spots, but dependent on the way the hair falls, I can see my scalp. Well, not eveywhere, but small lines.

How is this posible? (couldn’t find the answer anywhere on the internet)

(I have light skin btw)

Thanks in advance for your answer.

P.S.Great site, interesting and helpfull 🙂

This type of question has been addressed here before. Thinning differs in people. Those with coarse hair can lose more hair than those with fine hair and not show thinning. Those who have miniaturized hairs will show thinner and thinner as the miniaturization increases. The loss of 10 hairs per day only reflects about 10% of what a typical person loses throughout the day. Most people see more hair loss in the shower, because they can not see what blows away on a windy day — but just because they do not see it, does not mean that it does not happen. We lose some of the 100 or so hairs on a 24 hour basis. Everyone can see their scalp, unless the skin is dark and the hair is dark as well, has a high density, or it mats together with a good, tight afro.

I was wondering since alota aussies smoke cigerettes, drink and love to party, if it cuases any premature hairloss from excessive binge drinking and chain smoking.

I am not familiar with a proven connection between smoking, drinking alcohol, and hair loss. Your definition of “party” may include drugs, in which case hair loss could be a problem, though I hope this is not the case. Please note a previous post, Does Drinking Alcohol Contribute to Hair Loss?

Testosterone Replacement, HGH, and Hair Loss – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

I’ve been on testosterone replacement for 2 years. I’ve recently had to start (hgh) therapy also. I’ve now noticed hair loss in the front area of my head and in the crown. I don’t know whether to stop all hormone replacement which I apparently need or try taking finasteride? I’m worried about the sexual side effects obviously of finasteride. Seems like a catch 22 to me. Low hormone levels are a danger in themselves but I don’t want to lose my hair. I ‘m sure this is a common problem but would like some thoughts on treatments. I’m 57 years old and just NOW am seeing hair loss. Is there any evidence or data saying that HGH can cause hair loss? It seems like it really got bad when I added that to my therapy 3 months ago?? Thanks for any help or opinions you may have . Regards

HGH and testosterone treatments cause hair loss, big time.

If you are worried about the 1% sexual side effect of taking finasteride, you should understand that the side effect does go away once you stop taking the medication. In other words, if you have androgenic hair loss and want to do something about it, finasteride can only help. If you are one of the minority 1% of the patients who experience the sexual side effect, stop taking it completely or try cutting the pill in half (50% dose). As with all drugs, you should consult your doctor before starting or stopping any medication.

Taking finasteride with HGH and testosterone may help reduce the hair loss effect. For many of our readers, it is important to note that the use of HGH and testosterone is part of an anti-aging routine offered by many doctors. This man did not say why he was taking HGH and testosterone, but many men feel revitalized from its use. Often it is used with aggressive anti-oxidant therapies as well. Most men want to feel years younger and more sexual, and the combination of HGH and testosterone does make this happen. The cost in actual dollars is expensive, but the cost in hair may not be reversible.

Does Body Hair Relate to MPB? – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Hi Doc!

Does male body hair, like chest hair and/or back hair, have anything in common with MPB? In other words, have you ever seen a bald/balding person without this kind of male body hair? (assuming he is not shaved)

I also wonder if a maturing hairline should be as thick as a juvenile hairline, or if it is common that it is a little bit thinner at the very front of the hairline.

I would really appreciate your expertise on these matters.

GorillaIt seems at times that the bald men have bodies covered in hair, somewhat like a gorilla, but it is simply not the case. There is no connection between body hair and the loss of head hair, except to state that those with lots of body hair probably have good testosterone production.

The maturing hairline is as thick as the juvenile hairline, as long as there is no genetic hair loss in the actual hairline (no miniaturization). Sometimes, the mature hairline is thinner (at least it seems that way to me as I look at my mature hairline), but that is just a feeling. No facts on that subject to back up my ‘feelings’.

Does High Estrogen in Men Contribute to Hair Loss? – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Can high estrogen levels in males contribute to hair loss (miniaturiztion/thinning)? I suffer from low libido, fatigue and a female hairloss pattern(dupa)… my estrogen/estradiol is at 45… my doc has put me arimidex…

Block Quote

Increased estrogen in men could be present in several conditions, including congenital adrenal hyperplasia, alcoholism, liver disease, and estrogen-producing tumors. Excess estrogen can cause sexual dysfunction, breast tenderness or enlargement, and increased body fat in a female pattern.

Hair loss is typically not one of the signs of excess estrogen and on the contrary could be seen in estrogen deficiency, like in telogen effluvium in women after pregnancy. As a matter of fact, estrogen is considered a protective factor for hair. Bear in mind that increased estrogen may affect other hormonal systems, and the imbalance of the hormonal system can cause hair loss. The cause of diffuse unpatterned alopecia (DUPA) in men is not clearly understood.

Balding Spots on Both Sides of Head – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

The hair on both sides of my head is quite a bit thinner than on the top. I’m 20 right now and I buzz my hair to a half inch every once in a while and just in the last year i started noticing really bare spots on both sides, but no problems on top… is this some weird sort of balding pattern or could it be caused by how much i wear hats? I am kind of stumped by it because i’ve never heard of the side balding before the top so any help would be appreciated.

Hats do not cause balding. You need to be evaluated. Get your hair mapped out for miniaturization to determine what is happening to you. You need to see a good doctor to do this properly. Get a diagnosis and stop guessing. You have too much to lose. Sorry I can’t provide more information, but without seeing the loss you’re talking about, there’s not much else I can do.

Taking Biotin, Fish Oil, and Lysine – Now My Hair Is Falling Out Faster – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

I am 30 years old,and have been dealing with thinning hair since I was 16, mostly in the front.

My question is, can certain vitamin/amino acid supplements increase rate of hair loss? I recently added Biotin, Fish Oil and Lysine to my normal supplements which include a multi-vitamin,C, folic acid and B-12 and it seems like my hair is falling out faster lately.

Also does dividing 5mg of Proscar into roughly 4 tablets work as well as Propecia since they are the same drug?

Thanks!

“Excessive intakes of nutritional supplements may actually cause hair loss and are not recommended in the absence of a proven deficiency”, as published in Clinical and Experimental Dermatology.

I might suggest that you stop taking these supplements. Dividing 5mg finasteride tablets into four 1.25 mg portions can be slightly difficult for some (it is even more difficult to cut it into five pieces), but should absolutely be as effective as the 1mg Propecia product.

Son Pulls Out His Hair Without Realizing It – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

While my son is watching TV or playing games, he doesn’t realize it, but he is pulling his hair out.

What can we do to help him be conscious of it and stop?

Block Quote

Seems like your son has the condition called trichotillomania, which is a compulsive disorder characterized by the urge of pulling out hair from different areas. This is one of the common causes of hair loss in children and is usually self limiting. This condition that is often an obsessive-compulsive disorder and it could be aggravated in children by stress and environmental factors. You should see a psychiatrist or at the least his pediatrician for further evaluation of your child. If the problem persists, it will eventually produce permanent hair loss (traction alopecia) in the area that the picking is focused.

Hair Color and Balding Gene – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

hey doc i was wondering a few things, the men on my mothers side of the family are all bald and not to tall… the men on my fathers side all have full heads of hair and are tall.. in the 6 foot 5 area.. me and my brother are that tall as well..

does hair colour have anything to do with the balding gene?

lets say my father was born blonde then turned brunette and i was just born light haired brunette then turned dark hair brunette… and my mothers side are just brunette

does that mean i will go bald cause my hair colour or are those different genes?

Block Quote

Balding genes and genes that control hair color are not related. Looking to your parents and their parents, brothers and uncles will tell you what you might inherit. If you are over 30 and have no balding, then you may not be balding. Hair color does change with age.
