Will I Follow My Dad’s or My Older Brother’s Hairline? – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

Hello Sir,

I have read many forums on hair loss and I find yours to the best and most unbiased. My question has to do with balding progression. My dad started loosing his hair at 17 and progressed to what I would believe to be a Norwood 7. However my brother who takes after my Mom’s father has alot of hair except for a very slight recession at the temples and a slight bit at the crown… He has had this since he was 27 and even at 32 it has not progressed any further… Recently I myself have noticed that in my crown it is getting a little thin, in the exact same place as my brother. In your opinion would my hair pattern mostly resemble my brothers? I am now 22 with no real hair loss just a slight thinning of the crown, and worried that I could become a norwood 7 like my dad. I have recently went on propecia however just in case.

Just a guess, but I suspect that your father (with his Norwood class 7 pattern) had balding that must have been fairly extensive by the time he was 22. You could be following the pattern exhibited by your brother. Get your hair mapped out for miniaturization and you can make a better educated guess.

After I Shaved My Mohawk, I See Hairs Falling Out – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

I just had a mohawk for a little and decided to cut it off. I buzzed my head with an 8 so my hair is about an inch all over.

I notice hair now through out the day laying in front of me. When i shower I lose about 40 close to 50 hairs everytime. I look at my hand and actually count them. I put bees wax in my hair and spike it on the top into a mini fohawk.

This is really freaking me out. I’m wondering if I’m balding or not. Any help would be great thank you so much.

It is normal to lose 100 hairs a day. If you are still concerned about losing hair, you can have your scalp hair mapped for miniaturization to microscopically determine any hair loss pattern.

I doubt expired pimple medicine has cause hair loss. Even if on a remote possibility, hair should likely grow back.

So If I Get Shedding from Propecia, Does That Mean It Is Working? – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

Dear Doc,

I have been on propecia for three months. After my pills ran out I got a little lazy and didnt renew my perscription. In fact I havent been on the drug for almost four months. During this time I noticed considerable shedding, which I guess, reading from your blog, is to be expected. My question is though, does the shedding mean that the drug was actually working? Or is it some abnormal side-effect?

FYI I am 22 and baldness runs in my family.

Sounds like you figured it out. Please be smart and go back and stay on the drug. Discuss this with your prescribing physician.

Treatment for Dermatitis in Eyebrows? – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

Hi,
Not only I have dermatitis on my eyebrows but my eyebrows are getting thinner. A dermatologist gave me a treatment for my dermatitis (carefully rubbing the treatment on my eyebrows) but I am too afraid to touch my eyebrows now. I rather to have an oral treatment for my dermatitis, and an oral treatment to regrow my eyebrow hairs (if there is any). Also I am planning on getting my eyebrows transplanted, though would that help against my dermatitis, and a hair transplant cost A LOT OF MONEY!!!

Topical medications work best for dermatitis. Regrowing eyebrows that are lost from manipulation can be difficult or impossible (if the hair has been lost from traction). Transplants will be exposed to the same dermatitis condition as the original eyebrow. Sounds like you need to get the primary problem under control first. Transplant only after the dermatitis is controlled.

Hair Stopped Growing But Has Not Fallen Out – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

i have a friend thats hair has stopped growing all together on one side. it hasnt fallen out an the scalp. it isnt red, sore, or look infected. i was wondering what could cause this?

It is not easy to make a diagnosis without the right information. I will assume that your friend is a young man and that he may be undergoing early male patterned genetic balding. Some men who are losing their hair from genetic causes will just stop growing their hair in the impacted area. Although this is not the common presentation, it does occur and it may last for months, even years before it falls out. The hair is often miniaturized (small, thinner hair shafts) and eventually a bald area will appear. Live hair follicles never stop growing and going in and out of their growth cycle.

Medical Causes of Miniaturized Hair? – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

in regards to low testosterone and low lh question that was answered…..

Are other medical causes that would contribute to hair miniaturization other than DHT/aga?

Male pattern baldness is not the only cause of miniaturization, which could be seen in many other conditions, such as Diffuse Unpatterned Alopecia (DUPA). Most of the cases of miniaturization are chronic conditions with gradual thinning of the hair. In more acute balding conditions, such as stress related hair loss, fungal infections, or alopecia areata, you may not see any miniaturization.

Female Hair Loss After Gastric Bypass Surgery – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

I had gastric bypass surgery 2 years ago and my hair is thinning. My hairdresser recommended 1500mg biotin. I am a female 52 yrs. Can this help?

Hair loss, and change in hair color and hair quality after gastric bypass surgery are common problems and typically happen within the first year after the operation. Your body goes through a period of severe starvation and tries to divert nutrients toward more vital organs. Although carbohydrates, proteins, minerals, and vitamins (especially the family of vitamin B) have been blamed for the hair loss, the exact mechanism of this problem is not known and multiple factors might be involved. The good news is that your hair loss after gastric bypass is usually temporary and will be improved when you get out of the rapid weight loss situation. Any patient who had a gastric bypass should have frequent doctor visits following their bypass surgery as the procedure is associated with incidence of iron, vitamin B12, folate, calcium, and vitamin D deficiency. You need to be on supplements of minerals and vitamins and you should also be monitored with regular laboratory tests for these deficiencies. Please keep in mind that gastric bypass produces medically controlled malnutrition to force weight loss.

Balding After 30 Years Old – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Dear Dr,

Great website. I had a question. You have stated in the past that the balding process tends to end at the age of 30. Can you elaborate on this? It has been my experience that most men lose more hair in their 40’s, 50’s and 60’s.

Block Quote

The very bald person loses most of his hair in his 20s, although this is just a general rule. There are different patterns of balding and these patterns often slow their progression as a person ages. But of course, the older you are, the more balding you will see in the overall male population. That means that the 20 year old with early signs of advanced balding may be that Class 7 pattern man by their late 20s. Some of the patterns of balding do start later in life, but these men rarely get very advanced hair loss patterns. The key to good control of the balding process is early detection, early diagnosis, and early treatment. The earlier the treatment for genetic male pattern balding, the better the medication works (like Propecia).

I often see men in their 30s start thinning and then progressing slowly to a balding pattern like the 3V pattern shown below. Over time, the crown balding in these men may expand to a larger area as they get into their 40s and 50s. Propecia works very well at slowing, stopping and possibly reversing the hair loss in those men who have this 3V pattern appear in their 30s or 40s.

For your reference, here is the Norwood Chart that shows the different patterns of male genetic hair loss. One rarely sees the Class 7 pattern start appearing in men past 30 years pf age.

Sunscreen Caused Eyebrows To Fall Out – Balding Blog

I used a sunscreen on my face (one of the new sprays) and while playing tennis, the sunglasses that I was wearing literally disolved and the eyebrow hair underneath the area where the glasses were over a period of three months fell out. In some places, small, very thick black hairs grow, but fall out after about 2-3 weeks. It has been over 6 months now and the area has not filled back in on either side. Is there any hope that this will grow back or should I consider having an eyebrow transplant? Thank you for your response.

Sounds like what you used chemically damaged your hair. I would doubt that it would come back, but wait it out for a year, just to deal with the cycling of the hair to be sure. Transplants are a good option to consider.
