Hair Loss InformationSuggestion for 19 Year Old with Thin Hair – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Hi, I am 19 years old, I have experienced hair loss since about 16. My receding hairline is getting really bad, and i have a bald spot thats just getting bigger in the back. The entire top of my head is also thin now. It is extremely embarrasing and depressing. I feel like I always have to wear a hat. I have been using Rogaine extra strength for about a year now, and its not working, but im afraid to discontinue since I may lose even more hair. If I try to style it, it comes out in large amounts (at least 10-20 hairs), so i dont anymore. My parents are telling me this is normal, but my dad didn’t start losing his hair till his mid 30’s. Im also afraid a doctor visit will be too costly ( I pay for my own college and parents wont help with doctor bill if I go). Please give me some suggestions. Thanks

You are playing with fire with regard to your hair loss. First, find out what is wrong with it by getting your hair mapped out for miniaturization and establishing a diagnosis. If you see me (in California), I will not charge you for the visit and I will map out your hair for miniaturization as well. If you are not able to see me, you can find a doctor in your area by using the physician search at ISHRS.org. Some doctors offer free consultations, but not all. With a diagnosis, you can have either peace of mind or a treatment plan with a Master Plan for your future hair loss. From that point, you’ll have a better understanding of what your future holds (in terms of your hair loss) and what your options are.

Magic Shaving Powder – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

I once used a product by softsheen carson “magic shaving powder” on my head as to go bald for the summer but ever since i used the product, i have a small patch in frontal area of my head that grows thin. its like v-shaped patch. please advise

MagicConsider two possiblities:

  1. You always had that V-shaped patch, but never noticed it before because your hair was longer. After going bald (with the “magic powder”) it is more apparent now that it is growing back in.
  2. Magic Shaving Powder has real magical properties (not good ones of course) that you have not anticipated.

Hair Loss InformationDHT in Sebum – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

I think its been scientifically proven that sebum contains DHT. Based on that fact I have a few questions

  1. Can you explain the difference of DHT in sebum vs. the DHT that causes MPB is genetically senstive follicles and why DHT in sebum would not cause MPB? Im asking because I was the one who posted about worries of not washing my hair/scalp consistantly, could have caused hairloss. Its possible in a 4yr period I went up to a month w/o washing my hair with shampoo, although I did take a shower daily, so the hair/scalp did get wet.
  2. Also I have a fairly hairy body and was wondering since I really only washed my face consistantly because of compulsions namely acne on my face,by not washing away sebum on my body caused more hair growth that I would had experienced if I washed myself well during this time? Im using the basic concept that DHT promotes hair growth on the body and hairloss on the head.
  3. Finally is there a definitive correaltion between hairy body and MPB? I was wondering because you always talk about the differences between maturing hairlines and actual MPB, would it then be your recommendation to males to wait taking propecia or any other med for MPB until you see definite thinning on the crown and vertex vs just some recession and minuaturization along the hairline?
  4. How common is it to see males have really prominate recession (NW2-2.5) in their 20’s but then just stabilize and not have any thinning on the vertex and crown? I think of Bush Sr. if you pull up a pic of him in his 20’s, he had definitive recession but then it just stablized and now about 50 yrs later, he basically has the same hair although alittle thinner due to aging.

Your post is a bit troubling to me.

How did you go four years with only washing your hair maybe once a month with shampoo? That sounds like a hygene issue.

I believe your logic is a bit flawed. Male pattern balding is associated with DHT, but DHT is NOT the only cause of male pattern balding. In other words, just because it is cloudy on a rainy day does not mean it will rain if it is cloudy. Thus, DHT is only part of the puzzle in the cause of male pattern balding. That is why finasteride (Propecia) does not always work on all patients. The cause of male pattern balding in its entirety is still not completely understood.

I do not believe there is any scientific proof that DHT in sebum is the cause of hair loss. Even if was true, it would not be the ONLY factor in hair loss. Thus the basis of your following questions is subject to a false assumption (sorry).

The difference between a maturing hairline (normal) and receding hairline (male pattern balding) has to do with the location of the recession and how far the recession goes with respect to basic proportion of an individual’s face. Keep in mind that everybody’s face is unique and there are subtle variations. To be more scientific (for an individual case) more detailed examinations (including a miniaturization study) and a complete history of the hair recession would be appropriate.

Increased body hair does not correlate well with MPB.

Hair Loss InformationFather Went Bald at 19, I’ve Still Got My Hair at 21 – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Hi! My father started balding, according to him, when he was 19, and from there it progressively got worse. Now, only a horse shoe of hair remains on his head. I’m 21, and my hair is very thick, and it continues to grow without stop. Moreover, it seems like, genetically speaking, i didn’t inherit his side of the family, i look nothing like him, and my appearance looks like family members who have had thick hair for all their lives. Does this mean, taking into consideration that i have a thick set of hair, that i didn’t inherit those genes?

Block Quote

Norwood Class 7Your father sounds like a Norwood Class 7 patterned hair loss (see image at right). Usually if you are going to inherit this pattern, you would already have signs of it as that pattern usually starts showing miniaturization at your age. These very advanced hair loss patterns are nearly complete by the mid-20s. That is, of course, no guarantee, but it does sound like you have inherited your hair genetics from some other person in the family.

Until you reach around age 26, you will not know if you are going to have genetic balding (possibly a balding pattern less severe than your father’s pattern), as most men show some signs of hair loss by that age if they are going to develop genetic balding.

Ephedra and Hair Loss – Balding Blog

You recently answered a question about amphetamines causing hairloss in which you stated it can. Amphetamines are a CNS (central nervous system) stimulator that suppress appetite, increase energy, etc… Would Ephedra which also happens to be a CNS stimulator cause the same hair loss effects as amphetamines would? Basically, wouldn’t amphetamimes and ephedra physically stress the adrenals of the body? I have used ephedra for almost 3 years daily to help with workouts and during this time is when I noticed my hair thinning/miniaturizing…….

You seemed to have answered your own question. Yes, ephedra can cause hair loss.

Very Irregular Periods a Cause for Female Hair Loss? – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Hello there….I am a 29 year old female experiencing frontal and temporal hairloss. I am upset and not sure what to do. I have VERY irregular periods. I may have one 1-2 times a year. Will this cause hairloss? I know a decrease in estrogen will cause it, but I am young and wonder if a very rare period would contribute to it. I have had my thyroid checked and it was ok. Not sure what causes the irregular periods either. I would greatly appreciate a reply to help my questions. I am a nursing student who will be graduating this coming May and would like to look nice for pictures. Thank You

There may be no relationship between your hair loss and your periods. There are conditions like Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS), where infrequent periods and hair loss go together. You can see this at 4woman.gov or PCOSupport.

I am not suggesting that this is what is wrong with you, but the diagnosis of female hair loss is complex and requires a complete examination by someone who can evaluate your periods and your hair loss in partnership with you.

Can Any of These Supplements Cause Hair Loss? – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Dr.
I wanted to know, since I have been taking creatine, animal m stack and muscle milk I have noticed my hair has been falling off, I also take ocuvite, fish oil, and korean ginseng, do any of these supplements contain anything that may make my hair fall faster, I mean im just concerned since I am only 20 years old.

Block Quote

It is a cruel fate of nature for some of us to lose hair at such young age. While I cannot comment on every supplement and their efficacy on hair growth or loss, sometimes the cause of hair loss can be related to increased androgens (example: testosterone) in your body. Drugs like finasteride (Propecia) work by addressing this fact. It is my general opinion that no one source of food or supplements are a cause of hair loss unless it has steroid type of activities (of which there are probably a few natural type of substances out there on the market). If you are losing hair then it is likely you may have a genetic component of hair loss. To be certain, you should have your scalp hair examined by a doctor and if possible have you scalp hair mapped for miniaturization.

Losing Eyelashes – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

do some balding/thining men lose their eye lash hair too, i noticed my dad has some hair there left, but not much, it seems like im losing some eye lash hair too

The loss of eyelashes in men can be a genetic characteristic. It could be unrelated to male patterned balding. From what you wrote, that is what it seems like. Are there other men in the family line that also have loss of eyelash hair?

Itchy Scalp, Hair Loss from MS? – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

I am a 45 year old female who is diagnosed with M.S. (relapsing & remitting). My scalp has, over the last few months, become itchy followed by overall hair loss (no patches) and there is no dandruff – could it possibly be linked to the M.S.? Is there anything I can do to help the situation. I mentioned it to my doctor who said it was probably my age and there was nothing I can do about it.

Block Quote

ChickenThis could be a chicken and egg situation. We know that Multiple Sclerosis causes paresthesia (numbness, tingling, or burning) and this may cause you to scratch it. Scratching it can cause hair loss. So in one of the scenarios, the MS can be the underlying cause of a process that leads to hair loss. There are many other things that can cause thinning hair, so you might want to see a dermatologist for an assessment of the hair loss.

My Hairline Is Diagonal – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Hi, I am 19 years old and have a thick head of hair. There is no thinning present whatsoever. However, when i pull my hair back to look at my hairline, i notice that it goes in diagonally, not quite at 45 degrees but still noticeable diagonally (perhaps the mirror exaggerates how diagonal it is), the right side more so than the left as well. I have shown my mum, grandma and sister, and they have said that my hairline is normal and not receding. I know its hard to tell without seeing it, but are they right and is this type of hairline normal or is it a receding hairline. Like I said, when my hair is not pulled back, I have a thick head of hair and you would not notice that I had this type of hairline.

This clearly bothers you. I suspect that there is some maturing of your hairline at 19, which is common in men. You could send me pictures with your eyebrows lifted high (a good digital photograph) and I will give you an opinion. Please reference this blog posting when/if you send photos. Thanks.
