Pinker Scalp Pigment Under White Hairs in 18 Year Old – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

I’m 18, and last year i started getting a spot of white hairs on my head. The skin on this spot is pinker then the rest of my skelp. Also I think the white hairs are falling out in this area. Is their anything that i can to to help thinkin this area?

These are genetic pigmentation spots that occur in some people. These areas are also subject to genetic balding if the rest of the hair has pattern balding (in some people), so I would make the same suggestions I always make — get your hair mapped out for miniaturization and find out if you are really losing hair in the white spot area, as well as other areas around your head.

14 Year Old with Bald Spots – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

I am 14 years of age. I don’t know how many bald spots I have, but when my hair is wet, I notice quite a lot, especially on the spots where I gel my hair. When I gel my hair, I do notice hairs in the comb. You said it should grow back, but I’ve been waiting 6 months to a year, and no signs of regrowth. How long should it take? Is this normal?

Oh, yeah. 1 more thing. My cousin hit me with a baseball bat, and then there was a bump where I got hit. After my mom put some green oil (it’s an Asian thing, not sure what it’s called). Now there’s a bald spot there. Will it grow back?

These bald spots need to be evaluated by a good dermatologist. A fungal infection is the most common cause of such spots and there are other medical conditions that need to be evaluated as well. You don’t want to be your own doctor here.

The traumatic baseball bat type of injury has been know to produce temporary hair loss at the point of impact. It should grow back in under 6 months.

A Second Hair Transplant Surgery – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

Dear Dr. Rassman;

Second Surgery.
How long should one wait for a second hair transplant procedure? I’ve read some articles of men who have had a second surgery only six months after the first and a third only within six months after the second. Is this correct? I had my first surgery 7 months ago and I’m still seeing new little hairs coming up where there were no hairs before. I had to look at my 2 days post op pictures to realize that these are transplanted hairs. So if I’m still getting new hairs coming in after 7 months how can a Doctor suggest to a patient to get a second procedure after only 6 months?

Again thank you for your honesty and for answering our questions.

Kind Regards.

You are absolutely correct. I generally tell my patients that 8 months is the minimum waiting time between hair transplant procedures, because as you suggested, more hair is still growing in until that time. By 8 months, you can generally expect 80-90% of the growth and by 1 year, 95+% of the growth.

There is usually a big difference between the first procedure and the second procedure. In the first procedure, the doctor will make most of the decisions with the patient’s guidance. In the follow-up surgery, the patient makes most of the decisions, because now the patient understands that value of the new hair, particularly with regard to hair and graft distribution.

Keeping Hair Past the Age of 30 – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

Dr. Rassman,

I read a while ago that if a male keeps most of his hair by the time he is thirty, he probably won’t go completely bald. It has something to do with testosterone levels. Is this true? If so, is it also true for individuals who keep theie hair by the use of Propecia or Minoxidil?

If you have not lost any hair or have any miniaturization of the hairs on your head by the time you are 30, then it is most probable that you will not lose it. The drugs you mentioned only slow down or reverse hair loss and they will not impact hair that is normal. Hair loss has more to do with DHT than testosterone, but if there is more testosterone, then there could be more DHT. Drugs like Propecia (finasteride), block the effect of DHT and it is the DHT that causes balding when the defective genes are in the person.

Staph Infection Causing Hair Loss? – Balding Blog

I have a 15 yr. old daughter about 9 mths. ago her hair started falling out. I thought it was a perm. It came out around the sides and back. I have taken her to different daughters and I have no results yet. She have risens alot this time she have two in her had this is the first time she ever had a risen in her head. One dermatologist treated the risen saying she had a steph infection. How this happen I dont know but could this be why her hair has fallen out and just want grow back I am very stressed over this please help us. Thank you so much

Infections can cause hair loss. Your email is not clear for me to understand what you are really asking. I would suggest that you ask your dermatologist, who seems to understand what is happening. Get the doctor to explain it to you. A good patient-doctor (or in your case, parent-doctor) relationship is important and can be very helpful in getting all of your questions answered by the person that is treating your daughter.

20 Year Old Thinning Heavily After Stopping Propecia – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

Hello Dr Rassman,

I am a 20 year old male and have had some hair thinning in the front for about half a year.. I started propecia and stayed on it for a about a month, my hair thinned out even more and side effects were not worth it. Now 2 months after stopping treatment my hair is shedding like crazy over 200 hairs a day and the hair feels brittle all over my head. I searched through your blog but havn’t seen anything about this issue in my age range. thanks

My blog is full of recommendations to get yourself diagnosed. You need to have your hair mapped out for miniaturization, as I have said 1000 times before (perhaps even more than that). If you do not know what is wrong with you, how can you treat it? The miniaturization map tells what is going on and that comes about before you treat it.

Glandular Fever with Hepatitis of the Liver Caused My Hair Loss? – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

Hi!!
I was just wondering. I am a 19 year old male and as a younger teenager i had very thick dark hair. Earlier this year i had severe glandular fever with hepatitus of the liver. It is now 7 months since then, but ever since, my hair has been falling out quite alot and my hair seems thinner too. When my hair is wet, my scalp is noticeable and their seems to be large spaces between each hair strand. I was wondering if the hepatitus of the liver or the glandular fever i had could lead to this hair loss even though it is now 7 months later; or is this permanent?? please let me know as it is very damaging to my self esteem and atleast if i knew i would know if it will grow back or not.

Infectious mononucleosis, commonly known as glandular fever, is a viral infection, which is caused by the Epstein-Barr virus. This disease often impacts the liver and produces a form of hepatitis. If you are genetically predisposed for balding, then the stress of the disease could well be the precipitating factor that can accelerate your normal aging balding problem. Best to get your hair mapped out for miniaturization and assuming that I am correct, consider starting Propecia. The earlier you do this, the better off you will be. My heart goes out to you through this process and fortunately there is a solution, but you need to act sooner rather than later, as genetic hair loss at some point is irreversible.

Can Shock Loss From My 2nd Surgery Hurt My 1st Surgery From 9 Months Earlier? – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

I first had 2500 grafts transplanted in Oct of 2005. I thought this went well and my clinic ran a special [per graft price] if I did the next surgury in July, 2006. Exactly 9 months after my first surgery. I had 3000 grafts this time and it went OK. I started using minoxidal 2% five days after surgury per post op instructions. I feel like I had some shock loss about 3 to 4 weeks after surgury. Now I am at 7 weeks post op. My question is this: Since I was stage 6 baldness, Is it possible that new hair from my first surgury could get shocked out? Will it grow back? Also my post op instructions say that I can discontinue minoxidil after 6 weeks. What do you think about what I have told you? Thanks

You should direct these questions to you doctor. Shock hair loss for the second surgery 9 months after the first surgery is very, very unusual. I do not recommend minoxidil right after surgery unless you were on it prior to the surgery. Usually, shock hair loss reverses within 2-5 months after it happens.

Pressure Hair Loss? – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

I am a 31 year old female. I recently had 2 major surgeries on my back which required me to lay on my stomach in the OR for about 8 hours for both procudures. after which I noticed a spot on my forhead that hurt. Actually everywhere my body was touching the operating table hurt because of the amount of time and repetative movement involved in this very long surgery. 2 weeks after I notice the hair gone from that spot in my forhead. It no longer hurts but I figure with it being a month since the surgery that I would see it growing back by now. The area is still shiney and seems to be getting bigger (this could be my imagination).

Pressure hair loss does occur. Usually if the hair is healthy to start with, it will reverse. The shine you are seeing reflects the acute loss which will eventually disappear when the hair returns after 3-6 months from the date of the injury.

Can Sports Cause Hair Loss? – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

Hello, doc.

I’m a 25-year-old Chinese male. I’ve been suffering from hair loss since high school. I began to take Proscar a month ago. I have some questions:

  1. Will finasteride lose some of its effect when exposed to the air? Since I currently split a pill into 4 parts.
  2. I take part in sports very often like jogging, soccer. Do such sports do harm to my hair?
  3. What kind of foods will help the treatment of hair loss?

Thank you for any help.

  1. I do not like to give recommendations for how to manage drugs that are not the way the manufacturer engineered it to be. If I were to guess, I would keep any pills in a humidity free container if I were to do what you do.
  2. Sports are not harmful for your hair. In fact, as a way of managing stress, sports may help you keep your hair healthy as stress is one of the four causes of hair loss (when the genetic defect is present).
  3. The best diet is a well balanced one. Nothing magical about a good diet.
