Can I Have a Master Plan That Will Carry Me Into My 50s? – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Hello doctor.
When you talk of a master plan for hair loss, especially in men under the age of 30, how many years into the future is this plan effective for, is it 5,10,20 years or a lifetime? The reason I ask this is because I know a lot of young people like myself that are going bald know we will eventually become a NW6 or NW7, so do you plan for that? To be honest, If I ever did get a transplant I would want hair for the rest of my life, but if I could have hair until 40 or 50 I would be fine with that and then let genetics take its course. Take care.

Crystal ballFirst, you need to know that almost every person with a Norwood class 6 and 7 balding pattern will see those patterns develop well before they are 30 years old. The older you are, the easier it is to predict future hair loss. At 22 years old, it might be difficult if you are not destined to be a Class 6 or 7 pattern, but in your late 20s, the job of predicting is easier.

If you bet on a horse in the Kentucky Derby, you can never be sure that the horse will win until the race is over — likewise, the Class 5 pattern patient may be able to predict the final pattern at the age of 26, more certainly at the age of 30, and with great certainty at the age of 40.

See here for more info on creating a Master Plan.

I Thought MPB Started on the Sides – Balding Blog

I have been to many dermatologists and i have been told by one that my scalp was red and i was sent a shampoo but to no avail. A second dermatologist said it was simply male pattern baldness. The only issue is that i am losing my hair from the middle all the way from the front to the back, is this male pattern baldness? as far as i understood it usually starts on the sides and moves in, mine is strictly a big strip in the middle.

There’s no way for me to know what is going on without an exam, but male pattern baldness does not start on the sides of the head. Actually, the only hair that should be untouched by hair loss should be the hair on the sides. If there’s redness, that’s something your dermatologist can treat.

I’m Bald After 13 Radiation Therapy Treatments – Balding Blog

I am bald now after 13 treatments of radiation therapy for a brain tumor. Is there a treatment for my dead hair follicles other than just wearing a wig? Now I cover my head with scarves but they fly away when the wind blows.

It is possible that some of the hairs will grow back within a year after the radiation. There is no medication or treatment to bring back hair lost from radiation treatment. All you can do is wait. Temporary hair loss is more common, but hair loss is known to be permanent depending on the dose. A small study about this was published in 2004.

There are other options that may be available, but one can not guess wildly here without waiting out the year.

Any Miraculous Results from Unusual Hair Loss Cases? – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Hi Dr.

What is the most unusual case you have come across during your time dealing with hair loss patients.

Has there been any miraculous results or otherwise unusual results that may give some of us extra hope?

Block Quote

The usual hair loss cause in men the vast majority of the time is genetics. There’s not much you can do to change what your mom and dad gave you. At times the hair loss is not uniform or symmetrical and this leads to some interesting patterns. In many patients, I have seen one side balding much faster than the other. Unusual hair loss patterns in men include a completely Norwood class 7 pattern except for the first 1/2inch of the hairline, which is completely intact. Many of these men grow out the frontal hair and use it as a strange looking comb-back hair style, and it works.

For men, we can postpone the inevitable with drugs such as Propecia (finasteride 1mg) or Rogaine (minoxidil 5% topical). I suspect in the coming years, there may be new drugs or other medical breakthroughs such as cloning, but that may take years just to get FDA clearance.

The hair transplantation methods of the past have created many interesting problems today. In the old days, plugs were put into the crown before the hair was lost, and then as the balding progressed, an island of plugs remained in the middle of a bald crown — a very weird look. Hair transplant surgery today provides awesome results. Not to toot our horn, but our patients seem to think they get miraculous results… which is a prejudice induced because of the life changing nature of the process! Look at our photo galleries to see for yourself.

Bald Booth App for Mobile Devices – Balding Blog

Hey doctors,
I saw a funny app for the iPhone called Bald Booth that you should check out. I can see how I’ll look when I’m bald, and it’s a scary sight.

App — Bald Booth

I guess this could be entertaining for some, or a glimpse to a possible future for others. For those curious folks with an iPhone or iPad, you can find the app in the iTunes Store; and for those with Android devices, you can find it in the Google Play Store.

Doctor Recommended Vitamin D to Cure My Son’s Alopecia Areata – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

My seven year old son is suffering from Alopecia areata since december 2010 (first appearance: 7 spots of different sizes, stopped in june 2011, regrowth till mid-end september 2011, then hair loss starts again on other places, stopped in november 2011 and normal growth till february, new hairloss with 7 spots, actually regrowth…). A lack of vitamin D(25-OH vitamine D2-D3 is 10,7 ng/ml) has been diagnosed by a physician (who has some experience with AA patients) and he prescribed a vitamin D cure (choleciferol 25000 UI twice a week for one month, than once a week for two more months). But the dermatologist that is treating the AA thinks that this treatment is useless and that it could be harmful (he said that he would not administer vitamine D to his own kids…).

So my question: is there a risk for my son? can it help to cure the AA (or at least have less hairloss, longer periods without hairloss…)

Block Quote

I am not your doctor, nor your son’s doctor, and I am not an expert in vitamin D deficiency, so I couldn’t give you a personalized answer. If you’re concerned about one doctor’s recommendation, consider getting a second opinion.

I do know that alopecia areata is a self limiting condition that will resolve without any treatment in some people. A good resource for alopecia areata information is the National Alopecia Areata Foundation. I don’t know that they would consider vitamin D as a “cure” though.

Hair Loss InformationIt’s Hot and Humid Here, and I Wear a Bike Helmet – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Hi,
i have a quick question.Im 18 years old and live in chennai, india its pretty hot and humid here.

I have recently (2 months back) started driving a bike and hence started wearing a helmet regularly. i have noticed my hair thinning on the top. can it be due to wearing a helmet? is there any solution to this?

Thanks in advance

Block Quote

HelmetHelmets or hats or hot weather do not usually cause hair loss… unless perhaps your helmet is very tight and it is rubbing continuously on your scalp. It is more likely to be genetics than wearing a bike helmet.

There is no absolute solution / cure for hair loss, but if it is early genetic loss, the medications I would talk to your doctor about are finasteride and minoxidil.

Hair Loss InformationCan the Microwave Oven Cause My Hair Loss? – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

My hair exposed from the heat of the microwave oven. is this possible that my hair will burned? what if i saw my hair been fall down. i saw pieces that is burned what are the effects of this?? Thank you

Block Quote

MicrowaveDid you stick your head in the microwave and manage to turn it on? There are safeguards in place in most (or all) microwave ovens to prevent you from turning it on while the door is open, but assuming you somehow did… I really don’t know what effect it would have on your hair.

If there was heat and you manged to burn your hair at the scalp level, causing 2nd degree burns to your scalp, I would venture to say you may have permanent hair loss.

Your question is very strange. But with that said… using a microwave oven in a normal way would not cause hair loss.

Hair Loss InformationAcne, Hair Loss, and Numbing Pain in My Arms – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

First. It was nice to see a blog about hair loss authored by real doctors and thank you for that. I am from Philippines and there are not much doctors here that specializes in hair loss problem thus when I visited once before, i was not able to get answer. So i hope you could help me here.

I was 19 when my hair loss started together with some big acne. My mom said it is hereditary but what concerns me is the very very subtle tingling pain in the place where I am having hair loss (which is the front). Sometimes I feel it after I comb my hair.

Another are the acnes, is there a case that having an acne and hair loss at the same time is a symptom of something.

3rd is I always experience numbing pain in my arms that I have not experience before.

I am sorry if I have too many questions because I read a lot about hair loss but couldn’t find answer to why I am having one. Right now my hair is in a norwood 2. I tried to talk to one doctor before but his answer was because it was due to stress then gave me prescription for my acne not my hair loss. Sorry. This is already long but Thank You in advance.

Acne doesn’t cause hair loss, and hair loss doesn’t cause acne. Your loss may be stress-induced like your doctor said, but at 19 years old it’s entirely possible that you’re showing early patterned hair loss. A Norwood Class 2 could just be a mature hairline, though. That isn’t anything to be concerned with. I haven’t seen you, so I can’t make that determination.

I do not know what numbing pain in your arms has to do with having acne or hair loss. I think you may be trying to link everything into one. Unlike physics, there is no unifying theory about hair loss.

My Doctor Said My Hair is Fine, But I Want You to Judge It – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Hey Doc,

I’ve been concerned about my hair for nearly two years now. I’m 21, nearly 22.

I went to my GP who said there wasn’t a problem with my hair, and that I didn’t need to go to a dermatologist. However, I’m still a bit iffy about it. I (think) I have a natural parting down the middle of my head. You be the judge. But either way, am concerned about miniaturisation and recession.

Based on those pictures (taken a couple of months ago), can you see if there is anything I should be concerned about with my hair? Hairline and crown/top of hair.

Feel free to post pics if this gets posted. Thanks.

I just chose a few photos to post out of the 35 or so you sent in the link, but I appreciate you allowing us to publish them.

I think you should listen to your doctor. Based on photos alone, your hair seems fine. I’m not seeing any cause for concern, and your hair looks great. We can let all the readers judge as well. Click the photos to enlarge.
