Is Xandrox 15% Making My Face and Eyes Red? – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

I was wanting to know if Xandrox 15 is causing my side effects. I use it at night. When i wake up I feel fine. My eyes are red however. Within 30 min, after i apply hair gel and wash my face, i get flushed in the face. I use extra gently face wash. I dont know if the high concentration of XANDROX mixes with hair gel and face wash and causes skin flushing most of the day. My face is hot and very senstitive to sunlight. Also have red eyes. Please help

Xandrox 15% contains minoxidil, azelaic acid, ethyl alcohol, glycerin, and phosphoric acid, so perhaps there is an allergy to one of the components in the product. Or it could be the minoxidil itself, since that is known in rare cases to have these types of side effects.

Androscience – Balding Blog

Dr Rassman,
What are your thoughts on Androscience’s approach to hairloss treatments ?

The Androscience website states the lead compound ASCJ-9 is being developed as a topical treatment for acne and male pattern baldness. And they will have completed a clinical trial for there acne cream soon. And they plan to start trials for MBP toward the end of 2008 (PDF).

Should the acne treatment make it to market would you end prescribing it off label for MBP until a foam arrived?

I only know what I read in the above references. Thanks for sending these, as it makes for interesting reading, but nothing practical that I can see at this time while we wait for the results of the clinical trials. It is far too early to speculate on what I would or wouldn’t prescribe. I’d need to read and learn a lot more about this.

Capiplus – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Dear Doctor,

I have used propecia for several years now with limited success – no hair gain, just prevented further hair loss. I have recently came upon capiplus, which is supposedly natural alternative to propecia. Although I would like to try something new I am afraid stopping using propecia might start hair loss again. Is it possible and does it make sense to combine propecia and capiplus?

Best regards

Block Quote

I do not know of any natural alternative to Propecia (finasteride) that works like the companies claim they do. These claims are unregulated by government authorities and as I have written many times, “It is a buyer beware market”. Capiplus is yet another saw palmetto concoction available on the market (the product also contains calcium and other vitamins that won’t stop your hair loss). See this post on saw palmetto.

You indicated Propecia has at least prevented further hair loss. That means it is working! Perhaps it isn’t working as much as you may like, but you have to understand the limitations of medication. Why do you need an alternative? You are already taking the real thing. You must also understand there is no absolute cure for hair loss and many men such as yourself will continue to buy into the promises of hair loss cure advertisements.

Can I Prevent Hair Loss? – Balding Blog

Hair loss is on both side of my family, so I’m assuming I won’t escape it, but what can I do to best prevent it if I have already noticed a slight thinning at the age of 19? Does flaxseed oil actually help prevent hair loss? What steps have shown the most success?

Nutcracker

Short of removing your testicles, there is no way to completely prevent your genetics from unfolding. If you are concerned, get your hair mapped out for miniaturization yearly and you will be able to catch it early enough to treat it more effectively with drugs like Propecia (finasteride).

You can read all about flaxseed oil (see the comments toward the bottom) here.

Getting Your Money Back from Hair Loss Product Manufacturers? – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

I used Kevis for a year – with no results. I asked the company for the money back and… they suggested I buy more of their formula at a discount. (yeah right)

Any suggestions?

In the case of a “money back guarantee” that is not met, the best way to deal is to take them to small claims court after you document your attempts to get their promise fulfilled. They will have to hire a lawyer to represent them in court, so most of the time these situations just work to get your money back before the court date in order for the company to avoid hiring a lawyer. Also, some companies will respond to customers that file complaints with the Better Business Bureau, though that isn’t a sure thing and being in the BBB is voluntary.

In the case of Kevis, I’m looking at their site and don’t see anything about a satisfaction or money-back guarantee. You might be out of luck. My suggestion? Try a medication that is proven to work and don’t waste your money on unproven junk.

Lost Hair from ScalpMed – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

Yeah i just bought scalpmed for men and i am 20 year old male and when i bought the item i had a receding hair line and thin hair. So i applyed scalpmed to my receding hair and about two weeks later my hair was falling out alot faster i iknow i need to stop using scalpmed because was making it worse is there anything i can do to get the air i lost from using scalpmed back!

There may be a money back refund with some products, but I do not believe there is a hair-back refund. Unfortunately most of the time, hair that is lost from genetic balding is permanent. I doubt ScalpMed (which is basically a boutique minoxidil) would cause hair loss from the product itself, but there may be a component of genetic balding that you are noticing. I cannot make a diagnosis of why you are losing you hair over the Internet without an exam. I would suggest you go see a physician if you are concerned about your hair loss.

Testing the LaserComb on Half the Head? – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

First of all, it was good seeing you and Dr. Pak on Jon & Kate plus 8.

My question is related to testing the laser comb, how come they don’t test it on half the head? I mean if they only do the left half, wouldn’t they be able to see whether it’s working or not by comparing it to the right half that isn’t laser combed? Or does it affect the right half under the scalp?

I’d guess that many have tried, but there were no significant differences. It’s my opinion that these laser combs or brushes don’t really work. In every patient I’ve seen that has used the home lasers, the therapy didn’t work. I also do realize that I probably won’t see any patients that had great results (why go to a hair doctor if the laser is working, right?)… so I base my opinion on the available research, which is not promising.

I welcome anyone to email me with their own results, either positive or negative. Please include clear before and after photos with permission to publish them (I’ll blur/crop out your face).

Hair Loss Information » I Kept Nizoral on My Scalp for 20 Hours! – Balding Blog

Dr Rassman

Due to a series of very unfortunate events , i had to have my scalp covered with very poorly rinsed nizoral 2% for over 20 hours (believe it or not , water supply was interrupted a few seconds after i started rinsing and a few minutes later i had to rush to the hospital ) . I rinsed my head thorouughly 20 hours later but i feel it itching like crazy .My question is : Should i be afraid of any hair damage , temporary or more serious ?

I would appreciate a reply as im overly stressed

I do not know the answer to that question, but I assume by the time you read this answer, if your hair is still present and looks healthy, then there will probably be no long term side effect of what happened. You might want to contact the makers of Nizoral to find out what they’ve learned about keeping ketoconazole (the active ingredient in the Nizoral shampoo) in your hair for extended periods of time.

Tonic from Bell Peppers, Onion on the Scalp – Balding Blog

Hi Doctor!

I read somewhere that there are natural remedies to reversing receding hairlines. Some of these remedies included rubbing oils on the scalp, applying tonic made from red bell peppers, and rubbing an onion on the scalp… have you ever heard of any of these remedies, and of their effective, or non-effective results?

Thank you!

I also read somewhere rubbing semen from a monkey on your head is also effective for hair loss. I wouldn’t recommend trying it, though. I do wonder how the first person stumbled upon that discovery…

There are many urban legends out there about hair loss treatments, and I’ve yet to see any of them work. Your proposition does not seem very harmful, so you can try it, but I also think you won’t have many friends that want to be around you after rubbing onions and bell peppers on your scalp. Keep me posted.

Hair Loss InformationHair Spray and Hair Loss – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Hair SprayCan hairspray damage hair follicles and lead to hair loss?

Block Quote

If you brush or comb through your hair after the hair spray dries, you may pull out hair. In men and women with varying forms of alopecia, the use of hair sprays can be dangerous with rough combing of the hair. Best to wash it out rather than brush it out. Rough brushing can be a cause of hair loss made worse with hair sprays. Otherwise, hair spray by itself doesn’t equal hair loss.
