Hair Loss InformationBull Semen and Katira Plant on the Scalp – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Hi Doc.
I’ve heard that anciant greeks used semen on scalp to regrow lost hair and also I just recently saw a hair salon in the U.K. charged people up to 55 British pounds to put bull semen and a high in protein plant called Katira on peoples scalp and hair. Now I lost hair all over my scalp because of seborrhea dermatitis and now im left with bold spots. Now I use Nizoral and its under control but not I want to re-grow my hair. what do you suggest. Also would putting semen on scalp interfere with the levelin scalp. Would semen of DHT already help to regrow my hair. Would the DHT level go down if I were to have excessive sex. Thanks Doc

BullI briefly wrote about this a year ago, and much like now, I didn’t have any real information to provide — Bull Semen Hair Product. There are people (apparently only at Hari’s Salon in London from what I can find) that pay good money to get this bull semen put on their scalps.

This bull semen isn’t going to regrow your hair — even the makers of the treatment don’t claim that (see HarisSalon.co.uk).

Hair Loss InformationCan I Switch from Scalp Med to Rogaine and Maintain Benefits? – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

hi, im 68 yrs old. had a hair transplant 10yrs ago and purchased scalp med and have been using it for 5 months. i was hoping to fill in sparse areas and the back of my head. so far the scalp med has been growing hair slowly but working. it is also to expensive for me. i would like to know if i discontinued scalp med and started to go back to rogaine would i lose the hair ive gained from scalp med? same question if i switched to PROVILLUS. THANK YOU!

If it is between ScalpMed, Provillus, and Rogaine, I’d say the Rogaine (minoxidil) is the best way to go. As ScalpMed and Provillus both contain minoxidil, either should carry the same benefits over and Rogaine or generic minoxidil is also the least expensive of your options. Go for it!

Hair Loss InformationAloe Vera and Minoxidil – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Hello.
What is your opinion or what have you heard about aloe vera (either in bottled form or from the plant itself) as a topical? Some have apparently experienced regrowth using it.

My second question involves applying it while also using minoxidil. Do you think it would be better to apply the minoxidil first and then the aloe vera or vice versa? I know the minoxidil
needs time to absorb, but would putting the aloe vera on first hinder the absorption of the minoxidil?
Thanks!

To my knowledge, there is no proven connection between aloe vera and hair regrowth. If you do decide to use both minoxidil and aloe vera together, I would apply the minoxidil first and then wait until it gets absorbed before adding the aloe vera.

Hair Loss InformationLook at These Procyanidin B-2 (from Apples) Before and After Photos – Are They Fake? – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Hello Dr. Rassman,

Thank you for always replying to my questions.. you’re truly a great doctor, for taking the time to maintain this blog for us balding men.. it’s a huge job, and you’re doing it well!
Anyway, I came across a site citing the benefits of apple polys for hair growth.. applypoly.com

There’s 2 before-after pics they provided. Can you tell if it’s doctored (no pun intended)? It looks a little fake to me, but I’m not sure..

Thanks!

I am aware of Procyanidin B-2 from Apple Poly and I personally inquired with the company a year or so ago for more information. There were a few journal articles published that seemed promising, but that is about the extent of it. My old adage of “buyer beware” still stands, but I am also open to new discoveries.

I cannot validate their claims or their before/after photographs, although they are impressive.

Does Niaspan (Niacin) Contribute to Hair Growth? – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

have you ever heard of the cholesterol drug niaspan helping with hair growth. It is prescription niacin which helps increase blood flow thus the flush in the skin you get from it. In theory could it be positive? I love your site. Thanks for all the good info.

Niacin is a supplement and not a drug. I don’t think that it will help hair loss or promote hair growth in a normal individual. With that said, I will refer you to a site which references a source on the value of niacin for hair loss — TheBeautyBrains.com.

Applying Toppik or DermMatch with Rogaine Foam – Balding Blog

Hello Dr. and thank you for this website, it is incredible the amount of information here displayed. I have 2 questions:

  1. I will start using Rogaine Foam as I used ScalpMed in the past and I had mild results (better than not using anything at all), but I wish to use a hair concealer after the topical application of the drug. I am not sure if I should use DermMatch (that had worked wonders on me) or switch to Toppik. DermMatch has to be applied on wet hair and that is what makes me doubt about using it (I might wash away the Rogaine). What do you think?
  2. Toppik announces a “fiberhold spray”: Toppik.com
do you believe it could affect the effect of the toppically applied drug, or once the Roagine Foam is dried I can pretty much put anything on my hair?

Thank you again!

FiberHold Spray

  1. Apply the Rogaine Foam first, then use the Toppik after the foam has worked its way into the skin. You can experiment with both the DermMatch and the Toppik and see what works best for you.
  2. I don’t know more about the FiberHold Spray than what is already in the link you sent, but I do not believe it will produce a negative impact on Rogaine after it has been absorbed. It seems to be just a fancy hair spray for Toppik users.

I Think ScalpMed is Working After Just a Week – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

I just wanted to say that I have tried Scalpmed and I think it is working. I just bought it a week ago, but I feel I am already seeing results. I am not using it twice a day like it says because I don’t like how the product leaves my hair feeling like I have gel in it and it really weighs my hair down considering how fine my hair is already. I wear it only at night. But so far so good. I also thought it was going to me a scam but its good so far.

Good for you! I highly doubt anything works in just a week for treating hair loss. Could this be like a placebo effect?

Hair Loss Information » Going Bald from Chemical Hair Straightener? – Balding Blog

Can you go bald from using a chemical hair straightener regularly? I follow the chemical straightener directions to a tee. I’ve been straightening my hair about every month and a half for 2 years. My hair grows very fast and it takes about a month for the chemically processed hair to be completely out. i keep my hair short. I’ve had no side effects whatsoever thus far. I am concerned about the future. I am a male age 25.

There are may women who believe their hair loss was due to chemicals they put in their hair (perms/straighteners), but take comfort in knowing that the most common cause in men is genetic male balding. If you notice hair loss, I would absolutely stop using chemicals to see if that is the cause. For now, it seems that you’re in the clear.

Crinagen – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

what’s up with Crinagen- does it work? well?

Crinagen is not a medication and it is applied topically. It contains: Distilled water; Polysorbate 20; Azelaic Acid; Gamma Linolenic acid, Zinc acetate hydrate; Niacin; Vitamin B6 (as Pyridoxal-5-phosphate); Saw palmetto extract (serenoa repens); Ginkgo biloba, Oleic acid, tea tree oil, Ribofalvin, Vitamin E (as d-alpha tocopherol) and Proanthocyanidins from grape seed extract.

Despite its claims, there are no clinical or medical studies that indicate any of these ingredients work for treating male pattern hair loss. Even if it is “scientific” it does not necessarily correlate with real human trials / results.

I See Growth from Laser Treatment, But Still Experience Hair Loss – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

HI,
Im a women of 25 years old, ive always had probles with my loss of hair, some months ago i heard about the laser hair therapy so i started a treatment. Ive been doing that treatment for about 3 months (Twice a week) and even i have noticed i have some newborn hairs i still loosing a lot of hair (about 100 per day), is that normal? what else can i do? Also i wanted to know if the laser hair therapy has any side effect…
Thank you!

It is normal to lose about 100-150 hairs a day, as new hair should grow (with or without laser) in place of those hairs that were lost. Sometimes we tend to lose more at certain times than at others and we quickly jump into panic mode. I cannot say if the laser treatment has regrown your hair, but if you think that the laser has given you a positive overall effect, then go for it. I don’t know of any side effects, other than an empty wallet. As for what else you can do — minoxidil (Rogaine) is a FDA approved treatment for female hair loss, if you want to give that a try.
