Will Hair Dye Cause Cancer? – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

Hi doc,
I have a question regarding hair dye. I have found articles on the internet linking hair dye to cancer. Is there any medical truth to this or is a basic dye product, such as Just for Men, safe to use? Thanks

Certain chemical colorings may have potential cancer risks, but that does not necessarily mean you will get cancer. Read the product label for any warnings. Any real risks must be appropriately labeled by law in the United States and most countries.

Silicium 44 Shampoo – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

I have been using Silicium and there was nothing wrong previously with my hair but after seeing the product in a shop i thought i would try it to make my hair thicker.(they say do not try and fix something that is not broke) After a month my hair started falling out with the root end quite visible at the ends.I stopped using it but now 2yrs on and my hair is still falling out excessively. Please could you tell me what is in the product that could do this to me. If my roots are damaged by this product is there any cure for me now. Please help me?? (i am 28 now and started using it when i was 26)

Silicium 44It is impossible to answer that question, as I’m not even completely sure what the product you’re talking about is. Some quick Google searches showed me a product called Silicium 44 that calls itself a “hair loss shampoo”, although I can’t find more info than a sale listing on a UK pharmacy website. I assume this is the product you mean, but even if this is the one you’re talking about, I unfortunately don’t have more info than the description provides — “It contains uniquely concentrated organic silicon which helps the self repair of damaged roots“. Silicium is the latin word for silicon, so the name isn’t a mystery.

A good examination of your hair and scalp needs to be done by a competent doctor who is skilled in this field. Sounds like you may have screwed up 2 years ago by not doing the right thing and getting yourself examined. Your hair is too important to treat in such a casual way!

Using Dandruff Shampoo After Hair Transplant – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

Doctor, I used an an anti-dandruff shampoo five days after my operation, as I thought it would be effective in dealing with the scalping. I’ve now read that this was the wrong thing to do and that by doing so I might have diminished the success of the transplants. To what degree should I worry about this?

While we do not advocate the use of dandruff shampoos immediately after a hair transplant, I doubt dandruff shampoo would have diminish the success of the transplants.

After My Hair Was Chemically Straightened, It Smells Burned – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

I has my hair straightened for a few days, and when I washed it, it smelled burned almost. I’ve washed it three times and the smell won’t go away. What’s wrong with it and how do I stop it.

You may just be smelling the chemical residue. It should wash off eventually.

Can the LaserComb Cause a Mole to Become Malignant? – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

Dear Dr. Rassman,

I have two questions about the use of low-level laser light therapy (laser combs). I have forwarded these questions to the makers of the Hairmax and they could not answer them or even venture a guess. I was disappointed because they advertise this big team of highly touted medical advisors, but their customer service department would not even check with one of these so-called advisors for an educated guess. So, what good are they?

Anyway, here are my questions. If a clear, ready answer is not available, can you please use your medical and scientific education, training and experience to venture an educated guess? Please.

1.) If a person has a mole on their head, could the use of a laser comb somehow “activate” the mole and cause it to become malignant? Should this be a concern and is it even a remote possibility?

My next question is in regards to the use of a laser comb along with the use of photo-sensitive medications.

2.) As you know many medicines, and even some herbs, such as St. Johns Wort, have photo-sensitive properties. This means that if someone is taking a medicine or an herb such as St. Johns Wort, they should limit their sun exposure time and avoid tanning beds. If a person is taking something with photo-sensitive properties, what will the effect be using a laser comb? Is there a contraindication? Can the use of a laser comb, in this case, be harmful or contraindicated?

On the other hand, it has crossed my mind that it might actually enhance the benefits of the low-level laser therapy due to the synergistic effect of the medication potentiating the effect of the laser light.

Bottom line: Will the effect of using low-level laser therapy, along with a photo-sensitive agent be detrimental (adverse effects/use with caution?), beneficial (it will synergistically increase the benefits of the product?) or neutral (no effect either way/it doesn’t matter?)

Your email raises good questions that haven’t been asked here before, but I wish I had answers for you. Any answers to your questions would not have the proper data that can be depended upon. I would suspect that the amount of time exposed to the LLLT is not sufficient for the problems you are asking about, but that is just an assumption.

Hair Loss InformationGrowing Fine Hairs from the LaserComb – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Hi Dr. Rassman, I’m 29, hair has been thinning, and I’ve been using the hairmax laser therapy for about 7 months.. I’m not sure if what I’m experiencing is considered positive results. Hope you don’t mind having a read, I would really like to have your opinion!

  1. Excessive shedding, quite common (apparently).
  2. Overall look doesn’t seem much worse after the big shed, but fine hairs have been growing. Not vellus hair, because these fine hair are much longer. And I’m very sure they were never there before.. in fact, for years they were never there. These fine strands of hair only started growing after I used hairmax.
  3. A few strands of dark hair growing on the front hairline.

Hair still falls, but within the common average of like 10 – 20 strands a day. Will the fine hair ever grow darker? Cos although these fine hair grow out longer, they don’t seem to make much cosmetic difference. Will they always remain this fine? Are my results considered positive?

Anyway, I thank you for your time.

LasercombI am impressed that you are seeing some growth and surprised about the shed you discussed. If you’re seeing growth at all, that absolutely should be considered positive. As to whether those hairs will get thicker, I couldn’t say.

A man your age should be on Propecia (finasteride 1mg), as that will be the very best thing you can do to treat your hair loss. The LaserComb might be a good addition to the Propecia, but it is not a substitute for finasteride, which actually blocks DHT.

Hair Loss InformationH-Pantoten 3 and Hair Growth? – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

what is your opinion on H-Pantoten 3 . I had a lady tell me that it had done wonders for her husbands hair growth.

Block Quote

H-Pantoten 3 is a natural supplement, and as stated many times here on BaldingBlog, it is my opinion that there are no proven supplement treatments for hair loss. If if it worked for the lady’s husband, I’m pleased to hear it! However, this is a “buyer beware” market. It seems most people think it is worth a shot if the cost is right, and as such, we collectively spend millions, if not billions of dollars on that elusive hair loss treatment.

To date the only proven method for regrowing hair is:

  1. oral finasteride 1mg (Propecia) — for men only
  2. topical minoxidil (Rogaine) — for men and women
  3. hair transplant surgery — for men and women, though more men are candidates

Why Do I Have Gray Pubic Hair? – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

I have noticed 2-3 grey pubic hair, why is it happening? will all my pubic hair turn grey. My age is 24 and i am a female. will cutting grey pubils hair be safe?

Block Quote

In general, women start developing gray hair at around age 35, though this is dependent on your genes. Melanin produced by each hair follicle is what gives hair its color, and this is affected by genetics. I would not stress too much about this. Gray hair anywhere on your body is a genetic process and there is nothing to do to change the color — other than to dye it, cut it, or pluck it.

Ceramic Hair Straightener and Hair Loss – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Hi,

I’m 19 years old and I am wondering whether ceramic hair straighteners (overuse) can cause hair to fall out. I had long hair and i used it almost daily without heat protection and I wasn’t exactly incredibly careful when I was straightening my hair. However I have recently developed a small thinning area on my crown, actually teh hair all over my head has thinned. I have therefore cut my hair short and have started taking specially extra potent vitamins recommended by my dad who is a pharmacist and so somewhat knowledgeable. How long would new growth take?

I am worried actually that I might just be going prematurely bald due to bad genes as well as the fact that from teh age of 15 i noticed a lot of hair fall however it is only now (my hair is/was extremely thick) that it has become noticeable.

Block Quote

Ceramic hair straightenerDamage to hair with heat from curling irons, ceramic hair straighteners, etc, can potentially make your hair brittle and cause loss due to heat damage, but it should not cause balding. If your hair grows back it can take as long a one year, as hair goes through cycles of growth.

Vitamins do not grow hair.

If you are female, I highly doubt you will go bald at the age of 15 from using a ceramic hair straightener. There may be a rare instance where you may have other medical conditions that you may not be aware of that is causing your hair loss. In that case you need to see your primary care doctor for further work up.

If you are male, I also highly doubt you will go bald at the age of 15 from using a ceramic hair straightener. If you are balding, it may be due to genetic male pattern hair loss, as it starts at the onset of puberty.

If Foods Treat Prostate, Can’t Foods Treat Hair Loss? – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

I have read in medical magazines that certain foods and supplements help stop prostate enlargement and cancer. If propecia and dutasteride are used to treat prostate enlargement which in turn helps stop hair loss, would anything from foods to supplements which help stop prostate enlargement in a sense help stop hair loss.

The association between certain food and disease is being made more frequently as medical science probes the connections. Unfortunately, we are ignorant of the one-to-one connection between health, disease, and foods. Much of what we do know is highly subjective and tied to undocumented opinions. The good news is that medical science is probing the adage that we are (probably) what we eat and until we know which foods support which organ systems or what foods suppress what disease, I really can not focus upon the reciprocity you are asking about.
