Losing Hair from Laser Brush – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

Is it possible that the laser brush can cause hair to fall out? I have use one for three months and it seem my hair is falling out faster than before use?

The laser brush/comb probably has nothing to do with your hair loss and is probably either coincidence or just the normal progression of your hair loss. However, I suppose it could be possibly linked to a loss of hair. I have read a great deal about laser applications to hair. The Europeans have been using it for years, but no there’s been no satisfactory science produced. Nobody really knows if it works (it is all conjecture and subjective). We do not know the mechanism for its action (good or bad) so there is nothing more I can tell you.

Green Coffee Beans to Treat Female Hair Loss? – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

From Scotland on Sunday:

Scientists Bill and Iain Forbes have been carrying out experiments on raw coffee beans after discovering they had properties which could stop women’s hair from thinning, a problem which affects 50% of women by the time they are 50.

Now, after signing a “six-figure” contract with the major high street chemist Boots, the duo’s product is expected to become a major seller when it hits the shelves next month.

Last week, Boots unveiled its Expert Hair Loss Treatment Spray for Women, which is said to improve the thickness of each individual hair and has been shown in trials to significantly increase hair growth.

The full article can be found here — Eureka! Father and son make hair grow with magic beans

While interesting, I really don’t know the value of green tea or green coffee beans, so it is difficult to comment. While both the green tea and coffee claim antioxidant properties, that should not produce hair growth. Claims are easy to make for herbal remedies, as the standards are not stringent for such claims. It just goes to show that there is a huge consumer demand for hair loss treatment products and it continues to be a buyer beware market. I doubt that the use of green coffee will do any good or produce any harm. If I see evidence to the contrary, I’ll reserve the right to change my opinion. In the meantime though, regardless of how much the contract they signed with Boots (a large pharmacy chain in the UK) was, it appears to be just more hype.

A quick Google search turned up a forum on HairLossHelp.com discussing this new product:

ScalpMed Made My Hair Brittle and Dry – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

Hi Doc..I am a 47 yr. old male and I have thinning on the top and crown of my head. i have been using an herbal shampoo ( superhair engenizer) and 1 mg. finestaride which made my hair and scalp healthier and more manageable. I wanted to add more density and decided to give scalp med, a try…used it for 2 weeks and it made my hair brittle and dry …also had some hairloss. I stopped using the product and have been off it for two weeks…but hair still feels dry and brittle…my question is how long will the effects last from the scalp med. which contains minoxdil, last and will I recover the hair that I have lost

It is impossible to tell if your dry hair was due to ScalpMed or just coincidence. Either way, it is also not possible to tell when your hair will regain the loss you suffered. I do not have any personal experience with ScalpMed, but with respect to topical minoxidil it can sometimes cause scalp irritation as an unfavorable side effect.

L-Arginine and Hair Growth? – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

Hi, I saw a product online the other day. It’s called “Natural Grow”. It’s a gel made from something called L-Arginine. It claims to regrow hair and I know damn straight it doesn’t. But I was going to give it a go anyway and use it for my thinning hair. The reason being because at the very least it might strengthen my hair and maybe even thicken it which would be satisfactory to me.

However, every website I went to that is selling this product I tried to look up what other ingredients there might be in the product and couldn’t find any information-it merely says that it’s a gel made of L-Arginine.

Let’s say it really is just L-Arginine in a gel solution, though. Is topical L-Arginine harmful to one’s hair, Doctor?

Thank you.

L-arginine is an amino acid. It is a nutrition supplement. My question to you is that if you know “damn straight it doesn’t” grow hair, why are you trusting the product? To answer your question though, it is not harmful to your hair (only your wallet).

Revivogen vs Propecia? – Balding Blog

is there anything you can tell me about using revivogen versus propecia. they claim to inhibit dht more effectively then that of propecia without the sexual side effects (which is terrifying to think of happening to a 22 year old). also, besides transplants, what can i do to improve my hairline. thanks

There are no drugs proven to restore a hairline. Drugs such as Propecia may slow down the hair loss or maintain your current hairline, but it has limitations.

Revivogen is a shampoo — it is not a drug. There is no medical proof that it stops hair loss. Propecia is a drug (a pill you take daily) that requires a prescription from a medical doctor. There is medical proof that Propecia (finasteride 1mg) stops androgenic alopecia (AGA) or male pattern balding (MPB).

At the age of 22, hair loss can be devastating, but do not make desperate decisions. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Empower yourself by doing your research and become educated about hair loss and your options. Get a Master Plan with a good doctor who can perform miniaturization studies to map out your hair loss before you see more and more thinning. Why are you experimenting, when you can approach this problem scientifically, get a firm medical diagnosis and treat it properly?

Thymus Gland and Hair Loss – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

dear Sir,

I’ve read the article about relationship between Thymus Gland and Hair Loss/Growth at thymuskinshampoo.com. Is it really true about this method? Actually I already use Minoxidil and My hair just growth, but I have to stop it because my blood pressure decrease 90/50 (normally 110/70). So, I have to find another way to growth my hair.

Thanks in advance

You must be cautious about all the information available on the Internet. Not everything you read is true, and even subtle truths that can be massaged to fit a certain agenda. It seems you need to see a knowledgeable doctor who can discuss all the options. To date, only minoxidil and finasteride (Propecia) are approved and proven to work for androgenic alopecia (AGA) or male pattern balding (MPB). Some people can not tolerate minoxidil, because it can drop your blood pressure.

Dr Lewenberg’s Formula – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

hello;

I am taking Propecia along with Rogain. I just bought a new product called doctor lewenberg’s formula. it is 2% minoxidil with 0.025% tretinoin (retin-a). Will this product work better than monoxidil alone? also, I am using propecia and would like to stop because I believe it is effecting my sex life. Low ejaculate folume is my proplem. Do you think that stopping the propcia will help with that problem and do you think that the new minoxidil formular is better than minoxidil alone/ thank you.

Block Quote

Dr Lewenberg's FormulaI receive questions like this almost everyday. I often find it amazing and humorous since people purchased these shampoos/formulas for treating their hair loss and yet then they ask me if the various products actually work. Sometimes these products are so overpriced and people are still hoping against hope that these will be the magical cure they are looking for.

I looked into pricing for Dr. Lewenberg’s Formula, and their site says, “You will not achieve regrowth unless you use 10 bottles over 3 month period.” The “original formula” will set you back $300 for 10 bottles, while their “new and improved” stuff costs $350 for 10 bottles. Yes, it is priced higher than Propecia (an FDA approved and proven medication), yet apparently some people still buy this.

Retin-A produces irritation of the skin, a sort of light burn which is thought to increases the circulation as the body tries to repair the burn. As a result, it is theorized that blood supply to the scalp increases and any medications such as minoxidil (which is in Lewenberg’s formula) gets better absorbed. There is no firm conclusion on burn effect / increased circulation with Retin-A and I would rather use a higher concentration of the generic minoxidil (5%) and even Rogaine Foam 5%, which also has better absorption.

If you are having side effects from Propecia, you need to discuss it with your doctor that prescribed you the medication. In my opinion, Propecia is the best medical option for men with androgenic alopecia.

As I’ve often said, “It is a buyer beware market“. Just remember, there is no proof that any of these products really work (besides minoxidil and finasteride). For more about Dr. Lewenberg’s Formula, see Hair Loss Help – User Reviews.

Make Your Own Laser Comb for Under $50 – Balding Blog

This is not an endorsement of the laser technology, just a video that some of you may find interesting and useful. No, I did not make this. The video was made by prolific Metacafe.com video blogger KipKay. For info on the HairMax LaserComb (the commercial product that sells for around $350 more), you can read the posts here.

Update: KipKay wrote in to let me know the video has been removed due to some apparently legal issue. Sorry, folks.

Does Revita Shampoo Block DHT? – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

I recently saw an ad for “Revita” shampoo that claims to help regrow hair by blocking DHT. What is your opinion of shampoos like this that have supposed hair growing features? Can it be used together with Propecia (which I have been on for 8 months), or would that be overkill?

Block Quote

There are no topical products that block DHT for the treatment of male pattern hair loss in the same way something like finasteride or even dutasteride can. Propecia (finasteride) blocks DHT, but if you put that in a shampoo it will not work, because it will not get down to the growth center of the hair follicles which is at least 3mm below the skin surface. You can claim anything to sell a product and as stated many times here, “It is a buyer beware market”.
