Hair-Growing Hat from 1924 – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

Popular Mechanics Ad from June 1924: Hair Growing Hat

Perhaps we should revive this hair growing hat? It seems to fit in with other products out there that people are buying. It should be made to look more modern, though…

HA! Ridiculous!

Hair Relaxer Caused Chemical Burn? – Balding Blog

Hallo! I used a “no-lye relaxer” about 2 months ago on my hair and it caused a bald spot on my scalp where no hair is to be seen. It has begun to ache a little bit since yesterday too. It is probably a chemical burn isn’t it? How could something like that occur? How can I treat this problem now? I am worried, that the hair won’t grow there anymore. Is it possible? Could you please advice me about how to treat this so that it will be healed soon? It is worrying me very much.
Thank You.

Chemical burns from relaxers are a common complaint. If the burn went down to the hair root level, it may not return. You must wait this out for about 8 months and you will then know.

Bald Spots From Hair Dye – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

Can you get bold spots in different places of the scalp (patches) from coloring the hair? Product used was Loreal. No patch test was done first.

One can develop allergic reactions to hair products. If that happens, stop using them. You can then try a test spot to be sure. Make sure that these spots are not skin diseases like alopecia areata. A good doctor should be able to tell you if that is the case.

If The LaserComb Doesn’t Regrow Hair, Can It At Least Thicken Hair? – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

Hello Dr.

From your investigation into the micro pictures on the official website of the Hairmax laser comb, it can be determined that the product cannot be promising in regrowing new hair. Your count on the follicles show there was actual loss in one of their own examples. However, in regards to the thickining of the hair, can it be conclusive that comb actually works in this
respect?

There is this video on youtube of a man who claims to have gotten good results: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mw3QDhX8ef0

I am skeptical however, because he posted a video around the same time he claims he began using the product(March 2007) and he has a full head of hair in that video. Anyways, I would like your perspective on the issue of the comb thickening hair, since the claim to regrow hair seems false.

I do not know the answer to that question. My personal opinion is that it probably will not thicken hair.

Silica Plus and Zulvera – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

Hi…I was just wondering about a product called SILICA PLUS which can be found at a website called www.ghtdirect.com, I believe….I was just wondering if this would be a good product to take for making one’s hair stronger….also, I know Silica can come in pill form and was wondering if there’s any special brand or if all Silica pills from all different labels are more or less the same?

Also, there’s this shampoo called ZULVERA, I believe….and it can be found at www.herbalhairshampoo.com

the website looks stupid, the pictures stupider, but damn it, when you’re desperate, you’re desperate….just wanted to know if the shampoo has any good things to be said about it in regards to its ingredients.

thanks

Ok… you made an astute observation that the website “looks stupid” and the “pictures stupider”. You also have a insight that you are “desperate”. I would encourage you to take it one last step further to realize that perhaps you already know the answer to the question you pose.

I really do not know if Silica in shampoo or pill form helps deal with hair loss or makes hair stronger. As I have mentioned numerous times on this site, it is a “buyer beware” market and if something looks too good (or stupid) to be true… it probably is.

What is Regenix? – Balding Blog

What is Regenix and how is it used in conjunction with other products

To answer your questions I had to contact the company and get a list of the ingredients directly from them. Here is the list they emailed me:

Vitamins:
A, B, Series D, E, F, H1 and H2 P, Amino Benzoic Acid, Inositol, Calium d-Pantothenate, 8-Hydroxyquinolene Sulphate, Live Yeast Cell Extract, Folic Acid, Chlorobutanol, Menthyl Nicontinate, Organic Sulfur, Nucleic Acids.

Herbal Extracts:
Horse Tail, Stinging Nettle, Horse Chestnut, Birch, Burdock Root, Mistletoe, Chamomile, Hops, Balmint, Fennel, Yarrow, Soluble Collagen Derivatives, Quaternary Derivatives of Hydrolyzed Collagen Protein, Glucose, Glutamate, Biotin, Plant Protein, Saw Palmetto Berry Extract

Although presence of an adequate amount of vitamins is necessary for growth and health of hair follicles, hair follicles generally get them through blood circulation and there is no evidence to show topical vitamins have any effect on growth of hair follicles. Among the other ingredients, you can see some herbal extracts such as saw palmetto which claims some DHT blocking activities. The data on the effectiveness of topical DHT blockers are positive, but the studies are very limited and more research is needed before we can recommend those to our patients for the treatment of hair loss.

There is no direct comparison between Regenix and standard approaches with Propecia and/or minoxidil. One would need this to determine the cost effectiveness of this type of product in comparison with medications such as finasteride and minoxidil that are being used for prevention of hair loss. Those studies are just not available.

Can Concealers Such as Toppik or DermMatch Effect Finasteride? – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

Hi dr Rassman! thanks a lot for this wonderful site. I am wondering ıf you see some hair loss signs in your son, what will you do FIRST to treat it? and also, have you ever used concealers such as toppik, dermmatch, couvre….? can they effect the working of finasteride? thanks a lot.

If my son had early miniaturization, I would immediately start him on Propecia. That is what I did with one of my three sons. The use of concealers should not impact finasteride.

Where’s the Double Blind Study on Equol or Procyanidin B-2? – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

You say you are interested in research for new and improved hair loss treatment methods. Can I ask why no one has decided to do a serious, double blind study on Equol and MPB? Or even Procyanidin B-2? There is anectodal evidence these could help, as you admit. Why NO progress on ANYTHING in the US besides fin? Couldn’t an Equol pill make money if a study proved it worked for MPB instead of just hancuffing DHT? Why aren’t you leading the charge on some of this stuff, when you have access to the best research and best minds – and as you claim, a physician should CONSTANTLY seek better ways?

It is one thing to be a physician and another to be a researcher. It takes lots of money, time and logistic effort to conduct even a simple study, let alone a good, reputable study with many patients enrolled. While it is true that I am interested in research and science, I do not have the resources to take on such an endeavor. Perhaps you should pose this question to the drug companies and business entrepreneurs or find the funding to organize such effort.

Root Stimulator – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

i have hairloss in my crown area and recently started using a root stimulator product and ive noticed small bumps in that area. could this be new hair emerging?

Block Quote

I don’t know what you mean by “root stimulator” (it may be a marketing term, not a medical term), but new hair growth usually does not present like that. What is usually called hair growth, seen with available hair loss medications such as topical minoxidil (Rogaine) or oral finasteride (Propecia), is thickening of the miniaturized hair. The effects of these medications are to stop or slow down the rate of hair loss or sometimes to thicken the current (miniaturized) hair. Check this with your dermatologist if you see new bumps in your head.

Hair Loss InformationWhat Shampoo Should I Use? – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Dear Doctor,

I am a little confused on what shampoo I should be using.I was using johnsons & johnsons baby shampoo but a doctor suggested that I make the switch to Head & Shoulders containing 1% zinc pyrithione as this product has been known to thicken hair & even slow down hairloss. However, other arm chair experts on various hairloss forums have compared head & shoulders to sulfuric acid & claim it will thin out my hair even more.

Can shampoo have such an adverse effect on hairloss ? What are your thoughts on this product & can you recomend a shampoo ?
Thank you

Any reasonable commercial shampoo will work just fine and have no impact on thinning. What you could do is try different brands and then settle on the one you like. There are shampoos for dry and for oily hair, shampoos that give your hair more character and make it wave more. It is a trial and error process.
