Perform a Skin Test Before Trying Hair Products? – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

Hi Doc,
when we buy new hair products for our hair, like shampoo, conditioner, etc, is it necessary to do a skin test? This is because some products may be sensitive to a person’s scalp?

Yes, that may be a good idea, but most commercial products are designed to by hypoallergenic (low sensitivity for a reaction). It is generally safe to use almost any known brand on the market today.

Perfectil Supplement for Hair – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

I know taking too many vitamins can cause hair loss, but do you think taking (perfectil) which is a beauty supplement for hair and skin, would be ok while I am still having a balanced and good diet?

Best

While I doubt it will hurt you, I do not know what effect it will have on your health and hair. All supplements in the U.S. are relatively unregulated since they are marketed under the guise of a natural food product. I do not endorse any such products. It is a buyers beware market. Use at your own risk.

Hair Loss InformationGreen Tea and Hair Loss – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

hi doctor
i was wondering about green tea and that if it does indeed affect the 5a-reductase type I enzyme then surely there would be more testosterone that would be converted into dht with the type II enzyme? which isn’t being affected leading to maybe more hair loss depending on which type is more responsible for hair loss?

thanks for your time

Block Quote

I do not know of any studies that shows green tea affects 5a-reductase type I or type II enzymes. I have heard of many positive benefits of green tea, but even those claims are not well substantiated to my knowledge. It may sound dismissive or pessimistic, but herbal products are an unregulated field (since they are natural food products). I do enjoy green tea!

Can ProCede Hurt My Hair? – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

Hi, I’ve had thin hair all my life and just recently I noticed its getting a little worse and I saw the procede commercial and so I ordered it because it sounded like just what I needed, “to make my hair thicker” so I have it right now but im afraid to use it because I keep reading peoples comments on it. I’ve read some good comments but also some bad and I was wondering if you know anything about it? Whether it hurts your hair or what? thanks

I have been reading the same material as you are and it is clear that there are people who love it and some people who find it causes more hair loss. I really do not know myself, as I have no direct experience with it. It is an interesting approach to marketing where the company claims one application every 90 days. Just be careful considering the many reports of scalp/hair damage that are discussed in various posts on the internet.

If My Father Lost All His Hair, Am I Wasting Time Trying to Prevent My Hair Loss? – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

I have slight frontal balding and some thinning at the top of my head. I have no blad spot yet but its getting close to that. I am 28, my dad was completely bald on top, a stage 7 I guess. I have been using Propecia for 3 weeks.

I have 3 questions,

  1. Is Nisim or Nizoral any help to my hair loss?
  2. Seeing my father lost almost all of his hair on top am I wasting my time trying to prevent my hair loss.
  3. Do you know of any good hair loss doctors in the Tampa, Florida area.

Thanks in advance.

If you are 28 years old and are not completely bald as your father almost certainly was, then you will probably not be following his pattern. All Class 7 men have lost most of their hair before they were 28 and if you have no bald spot now, I would doubt that you would in the Class 7 hair loss pattern. If you get your hair mapped out for miniaturization you might be able to tell where you will be losing more hair, possibly even when (short term vs long term). See an expert and find out for yourself.

The answers to your questions are as follows:

  1. I’ve said it before, but, “Nizoral is a good shampoo. I do not believe it is necessarily good at regrowing hair. There is not enough scientific data to support hair growth claims.” As for Nisim, they make yet another herbal product that is not proven by the FDA to work. As regular readers of this site should know, I do not recommend products that aren’t FDA approved for treating hair loss. You can try it if you want. They say they offer a guarantee, but I’ll leave that up to you. Buyer beware.
  2. The choice for you is to be proactive or not. I think that you are not going to follow your father’s pattern, considering you said he was a class 7 by the time he was your age.
  3. I usually do not supply referrals for transplant docs, but you can check ISHRS.org’s physician search to find one in your area. Be sure to use the internet to research the doctor you chose.

Washing Your Head in Urine Causes Less Hair to Fall Out — True or False? – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

i do not mean to sound inappropriate or anything, and i am not trying to be foolish and silly. but- i heard that urinating in the bath tub and washing your hair in it can cuase less hair to fall out? Doctor, i was definitely not planning on trying this; but my hair is beginning to fall out more and more everyday. I do not know what to do? Could this so called “solution” work, or is it just a silly rumor? sorry if i sound inappropriate or anything like that, but like i said, i do not mean to. Thank you for your time=]

ToiletI do not think that you are inappropriate. As a matter of fact, people have tried everything over the years for conditions that had no known treatment and even trying a mixture of potato and sulfur powder, mixed with heated, old urine on their head is not an exception. Yes, you read it right. Your question ignited my curiosity and after some research I found this site that tries to explain all medicinal properties of the urine. Urine therapy in this website is claimed to be effective for treatment of many medical conditions including inflammatory conditions, trembling hands and knees, scurvy, deafness, sore eyes and numbness of skin and many other medical conditions. Gargling with urine to which a bit of saffron has been added is claimed to be helpful for treatment of all kinds of throat inflammations. That being said, I wouldn’t recommend pouring pee on your head… but that’s just a personal opinion.

I think instead of trying exotic remedies for your hair loss problem, you need to get hooked with a good hair specialist. You need a thorough evaluation for proper diagnosis of your hair loss condition. After having the diagnosis, you need a master plan including medical or surgical treatment for management of your hair loss.

Hair Loss InformationScabs, Burns, Brittle Hair After Bleaching by a Hairdresser – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

(female) I recently had my hair bleached from black to blonde by a hairdresser. They put 1 and a half big boxes of bleach onto my hair, which was very dry anyway, then put clear bags over it and sat me underneath the heat for 20 mins. He told me that he’d never tried this before, but it ‘should’ work. My hair was around 5 inches past my shoulders.

As a result of this, my hair on the left side of my head snapped off, so it is all around 3 inches in length, at the longest points. I also have burns on my head, which I obviously can’t see, but are extremely uncomfortable. They have scabbed up in the past few days, and this was done exactly a week ago. What will happen to my hair? Will it fall out with the scab? And do I have any rights, enabling me to take legal action?

Block Quote

I cannot give you any legal advice on your situation. You should see a lawyer for that.

Many men and women use bleach to lighten their hair color, but this can be dangerous in the wrong hands. Bleach is a chemical that causes irritation to skin and may even cause burns. If you are considering any legal action, you should at least see a doctor for an examination to medically document your burn and scabbing. A good photographic record of what is happening to you is important and these photographs should be taken often. A good doctor should be able to answer your medical questions in detail regarding your recovery and prognosis.

Hair Loss InformationAlpecin – Caffeine Shampoo for Hair? – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Alpecin. Is this shampoo really something extra? I did notice that you earlier did not recommend any specific type of shampoo.

I looked at the Alpecin website. This product is being marketed as “After Shampoo Liquid”. Their site has lots of hype, but the product does not have much value presented from what I found. There’s an article there that ‘looks’ like science, but clearly is not.

Hair Loss InformationAnything More on Procyanidin? – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Hi, Dr. Rassman. First of all thanks for answering a question I sent about a month ago. Your blog has become my main source of information about hair loss and I really appreciate the work done here! Doctor I was wondering if you could elaborate a little more on procyanidin. I read your comments about it some days ago. I read the article mentioned then and was really interested in knowing more about it. Is this subject generating buzz among doctors? Does it really look promising from a technical point of view? Thanks again and congrats on the great work!

I was as impressed with the scientific papers as you were, but I do not know anything more than what is referenced here —
