Mix Caffeine with Water, Apply to Scalp – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

I saw a German study done in 2005 that indicated that hair follicles treated with caffeine promoted growth. I saw your blog response saying basically that more time and testing would be needed to determine if caffeine actually worked in promoting hair growth. I just ran across a new article here: http://www.naturalproductsmarketplace.com/hotnews/71h3015525992312.html

Based on this data, does it make sense to mix caffeine into a water solution and apply it to the scalp (possibly sleeping with it in your hair overnight)?

Interesting reading. To see my other post on the subject, see Caffeine Used for Treating Hair Loss? I really have nothing more to add at this point. Thanks for bringing this to my attention though.

I Have a Hard Time Rejecting the FDA Approval of the LaserComb – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

In the world of hair loss, sufferers quickly learn to veer on the side of caution when approaching new “remedies.” It is for this reason that I stand behind your skepticism of the Hairmax lasercomb, despite recent FDA approval. But something about this really bothers me. If we can’t even trust the FDA when they tell us that something grows hair, who can we trust? How can we pick and choose which of their approvals to accept? The lack of any real clinical data might make the comb especially fishy, but I have a hard time just rejecting the FDA stamp. They wouldn’t lie to us, would they?

Please see my previous posts on the subject —Why Are You Suspicious of the FDA and the LaserComb Now? and HairMax LaserComb Receives FDA Approval?.

Even though the stationary laser has some scientific documentation in the European literature, thie stationary lasers are far more intensive a treatment than a few strokes of a comb, which I can not believe will produce any long term effect such as is reported. It’s not that I don’t want it to work, I really would like to be wrong on my stance, but I don’t believe in ‘fairy tale’ miracles. The cost to the individual consumer is not great (between $500-700), but the doctors and the company that is promoting it stand to make a fortune. There are many such fortunes made in various hair solutions on the market that just don’t work, so this now joins the group of what may be another successful marketing product. Only time will tell if it works. I really can not endorse the hair comb at this time, but alas, it is a Buyer Beware issue. The good news is that the buyer will not risk much more than his dollars to find out the answer for him. I can see no down side, other than potential disappointment and loss of money if it doesn’t work as you’d hoped — but really, that goes with along with most things in life. Balding men seem to chase rainbows when there is a potential cure available. Many disappointed people may eventually come to see me because of such comments and with honesty as the best policy, maybe it will benefit the practice of honorable doctors in the hair restoration field who can really put their hair back. I hope that people who can benefit from drugs like finasteride (Propecia), don’t put off treating their hair loss while they wait for the comb to do its thing, the thing that may not happen.

Oily Scalp Help – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Hi doctor, i have a oily scalp. How do i deal with that. I excercise regularly and my fitness is very good.. But how come i cant get rid of the oily scalp. I even shampooed daily.

People with oily scalp should use shampoos that are promoted for oily scalps. You need a stronger detergent in the hair shampoo and that is what makes the difference in shampoos. Daily washing is a good idea to prevent buildup of sebum.

How Can Lasers Kill Hair AND Grow Hair? – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

Doc…what’s your lay person’s take on laser therapy?? Seems odd you can use a laser to remove hair and also try grow it…sorry to bug you, just emailed you not too long ago…anyhow, they’re advertising lasercomb on tv, thought I’d ask what you thought of it…

To be honest, I am having difficulty believing that the comb works. A few passes with a comb through your hair each day brings hair back? My brain tells me not to believe it. The lasers that kill hair are different so look at them as a totally different product with a commonality in name.

Procyanidin B-2 and Propecia – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

Doctor Rassman –
I was surprised to read in an earlier blog concerning Procyanidin B-2, that you were “impressed” with this approach (given that it is not FDA approved). I do understand that the ingredients are natural and no side effects occurred during clinical studies. My question is this: Would taking the Procyanidin B-2 in conjunction with Propecia be harmful or cancel out any results of Propecia? Obviously, if the two combined act synergistically, then why not give it a shot? Lastly, do you think it is worthwile to try?
Thanks!

Any full understanding of Procyanidin B-2 and Propecia is not available in the literature. There is nothing to suggest that Procyanidin would not work with Propecia, so I would try it if you have the ‘adventure’ in you. The problem, of course, is that if it works you have no clue to which of the two is actually working.

Saw Palmetto and Grapefruit Juice – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

Who am I to try to create new ideals Doc, but what do you think of 160mg twice a day of Saw Palmetto, with Grapefruit or Grapefruit juice(since it increases the potentcy of certain drugs) with Neutrogena T-Gel 5 days a week(i have normal to oily hair). I am 20 years of age(I am blessed to still be young), and all I absolutely know is preventing baldness is easier than trying to regrow it. All I want is a naturally, farely cost efficient method to prevent it.

I’ll let you know in several months if anything has improved. I would like to think that since I’m young I can help prevent future psychological problems, b/c of worried hairloss in men. I say this because of my personal experience. I was a banquet waiter for a large catering company, and b/c i wouldn’t gel my hair up, I wouldn’t get promoted from banquet waiter to a banquet captain, meaning going from $11.00 to $12.50 an hour. I got over it, it just sucks that i know other men like me experience this kind of stuff also. Thanks for listening again. Your brother in war

GrapefruitSaw palmetto extract has been studied for its use in prostate disease without any proof that it has value. It is also claimed to be beneficial for treatment of hair loss, but again, with no proof of value. Although its mechanism of action is not quite clear, the claims suggest that it works through a mechanism similar to finasteride by blocking 5-alpha reductase and lowering DHT levels, but those are claims without any proof.

Even though this product is available over the counter as an herbal supplement, more studies are needed to prove its efficiency for treatment of hair loss and also to prove its safety.

You announced your decision on testing your own formula. Good luck and keep us posted with the result of your research.

Hair Damage from Hot Straightening Iron – Balding Blog

Hi, I have caused extensive damage to my hair through the use of a hot straightening iron. I am a 31 year old male who had minimal recession at the front and thick hair all over. My hair is now damaged and thinned all over from the hot iron and has recessed at the front dramatically in 6 months due to the damage. I have regrowth coming through but not really at the front from the damage. Is it wise to start propecia at this point I’ve stayed off using it waiting to see where the hair may grow back but after 6 months have not seen much at the front.

Thanks

You need a diagnosis as to the degree that genetic balding may be present. I would want to know where the damage is — is it limited to a particular area? There are many things that an examination of your scalp would show me, so rather than shoot from the hip, I would suggest that you go to a hair expert or dermatologist to work through the problem with you. It sounds bad, too serious to be treated over the internet.

Using Minoxidil with Toppik – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

Hi,

I’m 43, male and have just had a FUE. My question is how do i use Minoxidil if i already have Toppik in my hair? My surgeon has said that i should use Minoxidil for 6 weeks to help the transplanted hairs. Will this help? What if i don’t use the Minoxidil?

Regards and many thanks for this great service you are providing.

If you want to use minoxidil and Toppik, I would apply minoxidil first, let it dry, then apply Toppik.

There is no study to prove the minoxidil will help your transplant to grow faster. It may help, but nobody really knows. Your transplanted hair should grow regardless of minoxidil. It may help keep your existing hair from falling out.
