I’m Using Olive Oil in My Hair – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

My hair is still thick, but it’s slightly receding on the left side, and a little from the front. I’ve using olive oil once a week, it seems like it’s ok, do u think I should keep doing that???

Do you use extra virgin?

I would add a bit of balsamic with a pinch of onion powder to make a great vinaigrette. All jokes aside, olive oil has been used as a wetting agent for the scalp. It has no value for hair loss, but if you like it, you can continue to use is relatively safely.

I Used Lotion On My Scalp and Hair – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

Male, age: 27 – question
I naturally have a very high hair line. hair is thin and dirty blonde. it is about 1/2 inch in length now. since its winter, bitter and cold out. after my usual hot shower in the morning before i head off work, giving my head a quick dry from a towel has been leaving my scalp very tight and very itchy in spots throughout the day…so this morning after drying off i got some moisturizing lotion and rubbed it in all over in my scalp and hair, which solved the problem and made it feel at ease…problem was though it made my hair looking greasy…

i was wondering, would cheap over-the-counter creams/lotions cause clogging of hair follicles and scalp pores to hinder hair growth and to perhaps cause scalp pimples?

thanks doc

Creams or lotions can’t stop hair growth just through clogging the pores and hair follicles. You could have or develop an allergy to one of the components of the creams or lotions, and this may cause dermatitis (skin inflammation), which can effect your hair. Dermatitis could present with itching and redness of scalp skin with some swelling and eventually may effect hair growth if not treated promptly. Generally though, what you are doing should not cause you a problem, but be wise and react appropriately if it does cause you a problem.

I have recently noticed in my moustache i have 2 very very small spots which are missing hair. it’s very random but i did use an expired facial cleanser with Benzoyl peroxide. could this have caused it? will hair grow back? can i rub minoxidil for it grow back?

I doubt expired pimple medicine has cause hair loss. Even if on a remote possibility, hair should likely grow back.

Treatment for Dermatitis in Eyebrows? – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

Hi,
Not only I have dermatitis on my eyebrows but my eyebrows are getting thinner. A dermatologist gave me a treatment for my dermatitis (carefully rubbing the treatment on my eyebrows) but I am too afraid to touch my eyebrows now. I rather to have an oral treatment for my dermatitis, and an oral treatment to regrow my eyebrow hairs (if there is any). Also I am planning on getting my eyebrows transplanted, though would that help against my dermatitis, and a hair transplant cost A LOT OF MONEY!!!

Topical medications work best for dermatitis. Regrowing eyebrows that are lost from manipulation can be difficult or impossible (if the hair has been lost from traction). Transplants will be exposed to the same dermatitis condition as the original eyebrow. Sounds like you need to get the primary problem under control first. Transplant only after the dermatitis is controlled.

Kevis – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

I can find NO information/reviews of KEVIS on your website. Would you please research it and provide your opinion?

Kevis is a topical formulation comprised of non-drug, natural ingredients claimed to stop DHT from destroying hair follicles. Although, it has been commercially available in Europe for a while, no FDA-regulated studies have been conducted in United States that I know of, as the product does not need FDA clearance provided that claims for direct benefit is not made. Searching for available literature on this product, I could not find many convincing ‘objective’ evidence from any source which shows the effectiveness and safety of the product. They have had a strong marketing presence in the United States some years ago but like many similar products, there are too many promises of great hair loss remidies with too little to show. I guess we should wait for more credible research on this product, before making any further recommendations.

T-Gel Shampoo and Recent Hair Transplant – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

20 days post operation.

I am a 24 year old male and just had a hair transpant (2000 grafts). Everything seems to be going OK, however, I used a Tar Shampoo (T-Gel) for direct shampooing on the recipient area (twice) before reading that this may interfere with the growth of the grafts. I have switched to another shampoo, however, I am wondering if this has already affected the transplanted area in a negative way.

You can burn the hair below the skin. For a description of the product and its risks read MedicineNet. It would be unusual to negatively impact the new transplants at 20 days. You should go back to the doctor who did your transplants and ask him/her. I generally advise that after a transplant, you use gentle shampoos like baby shampoo, which is safe and will not burn the skin.

Melanotan Product and Hair Color – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

I’ve read about this new peptide called Melanotan. I don’t think it has yet gained FDA approval, but it’s supposed to change your skin pigment, enabling light skinned people to tan and decrease their chances of skin cancer.

If this drug works the way it claims to, would it also change the patient’s hair color?

I don’t know anything about Melanotan. Sorry! Drugs with claims of specific benefits are controlled by the FDA. The manufacturers could have a problem making any drug claims without FDA approval.

I found some interesting sites for you to look at:

Olux Foam and Dandruff – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

male – 15
Hey, Ive had dandruff on my hair for quite some time now. it is curly, black and kind of dry and short… recently the dandruff has seemed to be getting worse and my hair thinning ALOT… also it gets REALLy itchy when i start sweating (i do alot of sports..) and it is thinnning alot along the top and sides, it isnt itchy so much all the time, but the hair loss is very visible.. It also is itchy at times. i have been using ‘head and shoulders intensive treatment’ and was prescribed ‘olux foam, 0.05%’ which seemed to help, but havent gotten it re-prescribed for about 6 months to a year.. any help would be helpful.

Olux Foam is a topical steroid and it should not be used frequently as it will be absorbed by the body and eventually it would impact adrenal gland function. This medication is used for psoriasis (a disease which causes dandruff amongst other things). I believe if you read about it, you will learn more about what you are doing: Drugs.com – Olux Foam

St John’s Wort and Hair Loss – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

Does St Johns Wort cause hairloss as much as prescribed antidepressants? Thank you

Antidepressants are known to cause hair loss, however there are no reported cases I can find of hair loss from this herbal treatment. With that said, as this is not an FDA controlled drug, there is no regulation covering the ‘need to know’.
