Hair Loss InformationAHA Complex by Spencer Forrest – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Was wondering if you have heard about a “new” product from Spencer Forrest called AHA Complex. It’s advertised by them as a “hair vitamin that helps to inhibit hair loss and encourage new growth”. It is said to include Saw Palmetto and amino acids derived from fish oil extracts, green tea extract, grape seed extract, B6, etc, etc….I have found SF to be a good company, and I use two of their products. However, I am skeptical of this new product, even though they offer a “guarantee” that the user will see “visible results in 60-90 days” and that they give a full refund after 120 days of use if you are not “thrilled with the change in your hair”.

Good marketing appears to be their style. I would doubt that such a guarantee will materialize with hair, but if you are a gambler and believe that they will give you back all of your money if it does not perform to the promise, then you might take them up on it. Your call, of course. I remain skeptical.

Try different shampoos with conditioners that will put some moisture back if you think that it is too dry. I really do not have more to suggest, particularly in regard to the smell. Sorry.

Stacking Propecia, Rogaine, and Saw Palmetto – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

I just started using Propecia. I’ve been using Rogaine for about 5 years, and Saw Palmeto for the last 6 months. Is it safe to use Propecia with Rogaine and Saw Palmeto? Please advise. Thanks

Block Quote

I just returned from the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery conference in Coronado (near San Diego), California this past week. Your question was one of the topics discussed during the meeting.

Saw palmetto is a herb that has been implicated in alleviating urinary flow, which is sometimes associated with enlarged prostate. It has not been scientifically proven to work, but it is a natural herb and consumers take it for whatever benefits it may have. Many people make the link in their minds that saw palmetto could be used in alleviating male pattern hair loss with finasteride 5mg (Proscar) just because it is used for men with enlarged prostate problems. Again, saw palmetto has never been scientifically proven to help with male pattern hair loss and is absolutely not a DHT blocker.

To date, topical minoxidil (Rogaine) and oral finasteride 1mg (Propecia) are the only FDA approved medications for male pattern hair loss. There are some that believe that using the two medications in conjuction may have a synergistic effect, as they have different mechanisms of action. I believe that using minoxidil and Propecia in combination has useful value in some people, but I’d start with one at a time. If you start with both, you will not be sure which one is working best for you, and are committing yourself to a lifetime of multiple medications, when your answer may be just the one.

Woman Suing Procter & Gamble Over Hair Loss – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Many people seem to find a way to make a bundle in our litigious society. There is no doubt that hair dyes can cause problems such as skin allergy in some people, burns from improper applications of the dyes, etc. Television has many soap opera presentations of such litigations. A good company like P&G should have adequate disclosures on the products to cover the individual risks of particular patients. $12 million is a lot of money. The legal costs to pursuing such a case is high and for P&G, the cost is higher just to build and present a defense. Many times, companies like P&G will pay off the pursuers just to avoid the legal costs and internal management costs for nuisance cases. The lawyers that take on such battles know that, so this is like a game of Russian Roulette with money as the bullet in the chamber. As clearly stated in the article, “Once Ross’ firm determined the extent of Mack’s injuries, more formal negotiations began.

Can Hair Be Damaged a Year After Bleaching? – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Currently my hair is it’s original color, but for three years I regularly bleached my hair (usually once a month). Can this process have any affect on my hair now a year later?

Block Quote

After a year it shouldn’t have any lasting effect unless you burned some of the vital structures of the hair organ below the skin surface. There may be a delay in full recovery since hair growth is asynchronous and the growth cycle can vary from months to years. It is possible that when the hair goes into its sleep cycle (telogen) and then wakes up (anagen) it may return to your normal status. Be hopeful.

Proper Xandrox Dosage? – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

My question is about side effects of using xandrox lotion.and also I donot know if i use 5% or 12.5%.I will be thakful if you answer me.

This medication appears to be a combination of minoxidil and an acid which is supposed to potentiate the absorption of the minoxidil. I would assume that the side effects would be itching of the scalp (it is an acid, which does burn the skin), dizziness (minoxidil may drop your blood pressure), allergic reactions, etc.

Look up the posted side effects from the drug manufacturer and know what you are getting yourself into.

DermMatch and Toppik – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

I came across your website and was impressed with the information you provide. I am a 35 year old caucasian male with black hair who has been losing his hair for the last 6-8 years. I may eventually have a transplant and while I am saving my pennies, I would like your advice on a temporary short-term cosmetic solution to give me thicker hair. I have read about many of the botanical solutions you discussed and I know you cannot believe most of the stuff you read on most websites about hair thickening techniques. However, in at least one blog post you said that DermMatch helped improve someone’s appearance. Can you recommend which of the above topical solution, and let me know if they are safe?

Block Quote

Toppik and DermMatch are good products that can be looked at like cosmetics for hair. DermMarch can be found at DermMatch.com and Toppik can be found at Regrow.com.

The products work differently. DermMatch is a scalp coloring agent (like a cosmetic for the scalp), while Toppik has fibers that cling to the hair. Each have their advantages, but you need some hair for either one of them to bring value. They are relatively inexpensive, worth trying both at least once. They wash right out in the shower.

More on Rogaine Foam – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

In a previous post, I discussed Rogaine Foam when it just came to market. There appears to be good information now that the foam delivery system for Rogaine seems to increase the effectiveness of the medication by a factor greater than two. With greater effectiveness as measured by increasing blood levels, one could and should assume that the delivery into the skin is more effective than the traditional oil or alcohol base of the ‘old’ standard product. Greater skin delivery will almost certainly bring better benefits. Time, of course, will tell us what it all means, but for the moment, I would recommend using this product and sticking with it for a full 8 months before drawing conclusions one way or the other.

Any Update on Lasers for Hair Loss? – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

I’ve read all of your posts on LLLT and the article on the NHI website. I noticed that the NHI article was written in AUG of ‘05. Is there any update on that situation? I was thinking of buying a laser comb and was wondering if you had any suggestions?

Thanks

My experience is increasing with the large units. Many patients using it regularly have reported improvements to me. It is totally subjective, though. As I do not charge for these treatments (only for existing patients who have had surgery at one time or another with us), there is more objectivity in this type of report than in patients who have other agendas. With these patients traveling up to 3 times per week, braving the Los Angeles traffic, it tells a great deal about the value these people seem to infer. The final story is still officially out.

Where did you get your information? I am not sure if your formula will grow hair (actually, I’m pretty sure it won’t), but I suspect your head will feel good after the massage.
