Hair Loss InformationDermaRoller – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Can you please comment as to your opinion of the dermaroller? Thank you

Block Quote

DermaRollerHonestly… it looks painful. Its a roller with little spikes on it to open the scalp so that it can absorb minoxidil better. The site claims that it is pain-free though. I cannot really comment on how much of a benefit (if any) it has or if it really works, but the theory and concept seem valid.

Actually, I have one next to me as I am writing this blog. I ordered one to see it for myself. While the idea sounds good, like many good ideas, they often fail during the implementation. I’ve seen these for sale at a variety of online stores, from Amazon to Saks Fifth Avenue, so I’m sure there are plenty of users out there. If anyone has had experience using the Derma Roller, please write in to share your findings.

Laser Comb and Miniaturization? – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

In the past you were evaluating the laser comb. What was your impression? Do you think the laser comb would have any effect on hair miniturization?

There is no evidence that I’ve seen one way or the other that the Laser Comb will help with miniaturization. I did review the studies on the Laser Comb on the product’s official website and developed some opinions worth reading. See Analyzing the Results of the HairMax Laser Comb for the analysis of the Laser Comb’s photo before and after results.

Ammonium Chloride in Toppik – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

Hi there. Is the Ammonium Chloride in Toppik safe for us to use? To be honest, I don’t ever wash the stuff out. I just leave it in and keep adding more. I have much less hair than it appears. But, I worry about this ingridient seeping into my bloodstream from my scalp.

It seems that Ammonium Chloride is part of the formulation for many shampoos and some hair loss products, like Toppik. I would assume that it is safe, as product safety is under the auspices of some governmental agencies that would have restricted the use of Ammonium Chloride had any major negative reports come in. But, as I can not answer you with any authority, I would suggest that you write to the manufacturer of Toppik and ask them. Many people who use Toppik do not regularly wash it out. If you are concerned about the safety of the product, then stop using it, or at the least wash it out every night.

Tonic or Shampoo with Procyanidin from Apples? – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

Dr. Rassman… I have come in to your clinic been mapped for miniturization and soon I will be coming in to re-supply my stock of Propecia. I continue to enjoy the info you provide on this blog… thank you!! I believe that the fight against hair-loss is a noble fight where one needs to try the things that might work. The recent posting on Apple procyanidins really peaked my interest. I would be willing to try procyanidin tonics, supplements, or shampoos etc. would you know of a reputable vendor for such product… also which form would be best a topical solution or a vitamin supplement for ingestion? I’m not getting my hopes up here just wanting to see if this is something that might work for me in addition to what I’ve already done. Your help and advice is very much appreciated.

I found the following forum thread that lists sources for Procyanidin:
Hairsite.com – Where to buy apple polyphenols or procyanidin B2?

I don’t have any experience with these products, but please let me know if any of them help.

Xandrox, Revivogen, and Other Non-FDA Approved Products – Balding Blog

I am using xandrox for a while quite effective. However my hair has started again and have added spironolactone and revivogen to my regimen. I am uneasy about the revivogen i believe its making my hair loss worse, is this possible ? Apparently there is a shedding period for the product. And if it is making my hair loss worse will those hairs that ive lost grow back once i stop the product ? Do you believe its an effective or snake oil product ?

Appreciate any advice. Thanks

The enthusiasm for these products is hard to put into objective terms. I always want a good piece of science to form opinions. Many such products just do not have such science behind them. You ask me questions about how these products may interact, and I say I do not know how these products work, let alone know how they interact. If these products had FDA medication value, then the way they work and how they interact with other medications would be clearly documented for everyone to see. I always use the point that a natural product does not infer a safe product. Arsenic is natural, but not safe. It is always a buyer beware market.

Phytotrixil to Prevent Balding? – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Hello Dr. Rassman
I am a 22 years old male and i am loosing hair. I started using this one product called “phytotrixil” more than a year ago. (do you know anything about this drug??) And fortunately my hair got a little bit thiker. It is said in the instruction manual for the product that it can restore up to 19% of the volume of the hair and i think i have maneged more than that…so my question is: if i use this drug for 5 years, will i restore my hair completely?? (oh yeah…and my balding is genetic)
thank you!

Block Quote

This appears to be about as good as anything else out there that does not work for restoring hair. I can’t comment on whether it volumizes or not, but volume and hair growth/regrowth are two different things. If it works for you, let me know in 5 years how much of your genetically balding hair is left.

Losing Pubic Hair After Menopause, An Herbalist’s Opinion – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

Dear Dr Rassman:
I just read the article about the fifty eight year old woman who was losing pubic hair. She had gone through menopause at forty six and was wondering why she was losing (pubic) hair suddenly. Your suggestion was a good one…see a physician. God only knows what medical problems she may have.

However, as an herbalist, I find that most women do lose hair after menopause. (pubic hair not the norm) Quite obviously after menopause there is a significant decline in estrogen. Vaginal areas do become somewhat dry and lubrication during intimacy sometimes becomes necessary.

If after a proper medical examination nothing significant shows up I would recommend taking 800 to 1,000 mcg of BIOTIN daily. Biotin (a simple water soluble B vitamin) does promote growth of hair on the scalp. It also stimulates the growth of both finger and toe nails.

My ninety-six year old mother had mild dementia she proved allergic to ARICEPT. (She had spots on her chest and back!) I started her on a regime of 400 mcg FOLIC ACID and 1,000 mcg BIOTIN daily. Her memory has greatly improved and boy does her finger and toe nails grow. The hair on her head looks nice as well.

I hope you look into this approach after menopause. It is a more natural way of bringing the body some of it’s natural B vitamins. (plus promoting mental agility) As with any medications, this should be followed up with blood work. (between 2 and 4 weeks). Best regards

I appreciate your insights. I do not know a great deal about the impact of folic acid and biotin on pubic hair loss, but I can not see a problem with their use. Unfortunately, the formal medical literature does not give us clear scientific information to prove value of these natural vitamins with hair loss.

Hair Loss InformationDo Apples Help Hair Growth? Quite Possibly, Yes. – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Hello Dr!

I hope I don’t disturb you, I only e-mail you when I believe my content is of value to you/the community.

Please comment this article about apples and hairloss:
Natural Hair Loss Remedy Discovered in Apples

Block Quote

AppleI appreciate that you brought this to my attention. Very interesting stuff. I decided to research this a little further and found Procyanidin B-2, extracted from apples, promotes hair growth: a laboratory study, originally published in the British Journal of Dermatology in 2002.

The articles speak to the relationship between apples and Procyanidin B-2, extracted from apples. I am impressed with the published article in the British Journal (Br J Dermatol. 2002 Jan;146(1):41-51), which is a credible scientific source. Rather than rephrase what these articles said, I suggest that you read them and draw your own conclusion. I like apples and perhaps the old adage an apple a day keeps the doctor away may change to an apple a day keeps the hair transplant surgeon away.

Shampoo and Hair Transplants – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

I seem to have this “sebum” buildup which creates dried residuals on my scalp since the transplant was done. Does that imply that I need a stronger shampoo rather? I was told that it was good to use a very mild shampoo because it did not remove the surface oils, but I would think sebum is surface oil? Thus, perhaps a “Head and Shoulders” might be better? Can ANY shampoo hurt the transplants and/or contribute to natural hair loss?

Block Quote

Any shampoo will work. The transplants are no different today than your original hair was, just less density than you originally had. Switch to another shampoo, be adventurous and experiment until you find something that works better for you.

Hair Gel and Hair Loss – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

You responded to a post saying “good commercial” hair gel does not cause hair loss. Ok, what about cheap ones? And what is your conclusion based on, can you provide me with any studies supporting this position? How has this “myth” survived for so long, other than how most do in general – stated differently, what do proponents of this accusation base their claims on and why are they wrong?

Thanks in advance

OK, you got me on language and meanings. “Good and cheap” commercial hair gel should not cause hair loss. Otherwise they would be sued and go out of business or possibly go into a hair removal business. There is no medical study I am aware of to support my claim — it is just my opinion. I never knew there was a myth about gel and hair loss. I use gel everyday, as do millions of people.
