Ketoconazole Shampoo for Female Hair Loss? – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

(female) I am a sophomore at Rutgers University and my hair is thinning day by day. I don’t think i’m stressing, i get enough sleep, eat healthy, so what is the reason why i’m losing so much hair. I lose about 50 to 80 strands every day and this is getting me worried. I went to my doctor and she gave me Ketoconazole Shampoo, and it is not working. What should i do?

It is normal to lose 100 – 200 hairs a day. As you lose those hairs, there are new hairs always growing.

Ketoconozale is a medicine used for fungal infection (like ringworm). You need to ask your doctor why you were prescribed that shampoo. A good patient-doctor relationship and communication is very important. Please call your doctor and clarify your issue or diagnosis.

Propecia, Supplements, Nioxin, and Rogaine — I’m Praying These Work! – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

hi i am a 20 year old male with mpb…i know it runs in my family because my grandfather (mothers side), and my father, have mpb. i started thinning and losing hair within the past year – year and a half…but i have noticed recently that it has gotten really bad. i’ve been thru alot of stress lately bcuz of work, school, family and relationship issues. ive been on nioxin products for about 8 months and havent noticed any improvement. i just was prescribed propecia 1 mg from my doctor last week, but i cant start until next week (no money..), i have also been on prozac for about a month now, and i think that might have something to do with losing hair fast recently as well.

so my question is, will propecia regrow my hair or even grow new hair (since i’m young and trying to stop it asap). should i switch from nioxin products to rogaine 5%? i am also thinking about starting to take alot of natural supplements for detoxification and stuff…will this help? what should i do to regrow my hair back (or at least maintain my hair now…)? will this work out the way i’m praying it will?? please write back and give me as much advice as possible..thanx

Prozac can cause hair loss, and so can stress. Prayer is good. Get a Master Plan so that you know what you are going to do as you get older, wiser, and balder (if the prayer does not work). Propecia generally takes at least 8-12 months to see the benefits. If you are genetically balding, then Propecia often reverses hair loss in a 20 year old, but not all of the time or all of the way back to normal.

Hair Dye – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

I would like to know the safest brand of hair dye that could be used without damaging or aggrevating hair fall.

This information is best obtained from a good hair stylist. I do not dye hair, so I do not know the answer to this with any authority.

Cowlick Gives a Bald Spot Appearance – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Hi, I have a cowlick on the back top of my head (crown). The hair grows outward in a circular, flattened pattern giving teh appearance of a thin/bald spot. I usually attempt to cover it with longer hair combed over it and sometimes actually succeed in getting the hair to appear to go in the correct direction.

Is there anything I can do about this, it is very annoying and hard to cover since I am very blonde. It will just not grow out straight. Will short layers make this harder to cover or easier to fill in with the use of hair wax. THanks.

Block Quote

Cowlicks are common. The swirl in the crown is present on 100% of people, and some folks even have two of them. It is in your nature to have them. Although it can be annoying, styling adjuncts are the best way to manage them.

The below photo is of a natural swirl in the crown of a young man. The way the hair sits may appear that there is a bald spot present, but there is actually no miniaturization here, and thus, no genetic balding. What appears to be a hole, is really the point where the hair diverges from a center point. This divergence, the radial direction of hair that covers the full 360 degrees of a circle, is the point where I say “the hair changes direction“. Only when a cowlick is present, will the hair point to what appears to be a bare section of scalp. Click the photo to enlarge.

18 Year Old With White Hair – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

Hi, im an 18 year old male. I have thick hair and 40% of my hair are white. is there anyway to pervent white hair? its pretty embarrassing. My head starting itching a lot starting last year, dandruff exposes when i scratch my scalp. i started using scalpicin, but it only makes the itch go away for few hours. I seriously claw my head sometimes and feel like my head bleeds. ive been getting some pimples on the side of my head. i pop them sometimes to get rid of them. i take showers everyday, im healthy, i got short hair, i got smooth skin. i just have white hair, few pimples and late night scalp itch. What the hell is going on… im only 18.

The pimples may be the result of the ‘clawing’ you are doing. Breaking the skin makes you a set-up for folliculitis (which causes pimples). White hair is genetically controlled. I have seen many people turn white early in life. When that happens, hair dyes are the way to manage the process. Get a professional stylist who is skilled in this process and your gray will be washed away. It will require frequent applications to maintain the new color. There is no permanent solution to going gray or white prematurely. The frequency of dying depends upon the growth rate. The average person grows 1/2 inch per month and the roots of the gray new hair will start to show in a week or so. Then, once you understand the rate of growth the the ‘root showing’ issue, you can make up a schedule for repeat dying of the hair.

I’m a Satisfied ScalpMed User – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

I am a scalpmed user. I have had fantastic results with this product. NONE of the other products on the market did anything to Grow hair. I noticed some hair coming out the first 3 weeks of Scalpmed use, but they were replaced by thicker hair shafts from the same spot. Now there is less and less hair loss and my head is filling up with hair. I absolutely cannot deny the truth that my bald spot is flat gone. I would be glad to provide you pictures of before and after.

I’m posting this without seeing any photographic proof, but would love to see such proof through a good third party source. I have no way to determine if this is a real user response or a company plant. The reason for my doubts is that the response here has not been typical of the many responses I have received about ScalpMed. Regardless, I’d be interested in seeing those pictures — you can send them to the email address on the Contact page. Thanks.

Allergic Reaction to Hair Dye Causing Thinning in 15 Year Old? – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

Im am a 15 year old male and have noticed i’ve been losing my hair on a regular basis since i dyed my hair a year ago, i think i might have taken an alergic reaction but its been over a year and im still losing my hair. i do get paranoid and depressed about it as i have longish hair and that is one of my better qualitys. it is receding at the front and strangely the part above the ear doesnt grow in very well. i could really use an opinion either way just to settle my mind. thank you

There is no way to answer your question without examining you. Since there seems to be a one to one relationship between dying your hair and the hair loss, I suspect that the connection may be real and that some damage was done during the dying process. Was it done professionally? Can you go back to those that did it and ask them about it? Generally, good professionals who dye the hair usually know about mixture and concentrations that are safe. If you did it yourself, maybe it was not done safely. Tooooooo many questions that need to be answered here for this to be an ‘online’ interchange for producing value.

What If I Leave Hair Gel in My Hair For Days? – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

Dear Dr. Rassman,
I read one of the questions regarding hair gels, and you stated that good hair gels shouldn’t cause hair loss. I just wanted to make sure if it is alright for hair gel to remain on my hair for more than a day. Could that cause any damage?

Nope, no problem!

Soap BoxThank you for the letter and finding BaldingBlog. First, I need to point out to readers that I have no way to verify if this is a legit email from the actual inventor of Rejuvx, but I have no reason to think otherwise so I’ll take it at face value.

I am a bit confused that your letter states Rejuvx has “never been sold to regrow hair“, because I just visited your website which states: “Within weeks of using Rejuvx, people experiencing hair loss will notice improved growth“. There may be a fine line from a legal FDA point of wording here, but that is not my specialty.

Back in the late 1980’s and early 1990’s the Helsinki Formula was advertised to treat hair loss and was one of the best selling products for hair grwoth on the market at the time. What most people do not know is that the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission Act of 1914 filed a suit against the makers of Helsinki Formula stating their advertising constituted a deceptive trade practice. The court concluded that the product had a “placebo effect”. In other words, many companies have sold great amounts of product and have yet to do what they claim, so pointing out that you have sold “thousands of bottels [sic]” really holds no meaning but suggested value.

There may be laws and regulations, but manufacturers advertise what consumers want to hear. Desperate people spend money in hopes that a cure for balding is as easy as 1, 2, 3. Most of these claims will go under the radar of the Federal Trade Commission, because there is an art to stating certain claims without breaking the law and the FTC cannot possibly prosecute all of those that are in violation (they pick and choose their battles).

The Rejuvx website states, “The abandonment of artificial ingredients additionally makes Rejuvx prescription free, since it does not cause any significant side effects.” — No significant side effects imples there are SOME side effects and I would love to know what they are and so should potential buyers for proper disclosure. If there are side effects of any type, then I would be happy to contact the FDA’s enforcement arm to look into the language you are using and in pursuing a full disclosure so that the public will know the safety factors about your product. I believe that the FDA is empowered to investigate and report on the safety of products sold that have side effects and only they can judge what is and what is not significant.

I am pleased you have a successful business. It illustrates the fact that we live in a society obsessed with hair loss, and the appearance and worship of youth. While my statement may trigger a spectrum of theories and opinions about our vanity, it is also a catalyst for many to profit from our insecurities. My ultimate point is that it is (and it always will be) a buyer beware market.

How Can I Get a Proscar, Procerin Prescription? – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

Dr Rassman,
I had a couple questions. First, I have done some research and am interested in purchasing either Proscar or Procerin. Procerin seems to be less costly. Is Procerin as/more effective as Proscar? Second, if Proscar is the better alternative, how do I go about obtaining a prescription? Can I see any physician or do I need to see a hair loss physician? I am 21 years old and am just starting to experience the beginning stages of hair loss, but I would like to do something soon. Thank you for your time, I really appreciate it.

Proscar (5mg finasteride) and Propecia (1mg finasteride) are medications that requires a prescription from a licensed medical doctor in the US. Any medical doctor can prescribe them. The only caveat is that in our practice, we generally like to document the degree of miniaturization of scalp hair with a computer video densitometer to quantify and record the state of your hair before you start the medication, so that there is an objective record to compare the effects of the drug after a given period of time.

Procerin is NOT a medication. It is a cleverly named herb, vitamin, and mineral formula that claims to treat hair loss. You do not need a prescription for Procerin, because it is not a medication. The name Procerin just sounds like Propecia or Proscar.
