Nourkrin – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

Dear Dr Rassman

Great blog. Here’s my question:

A supplement called Nourkrin is being advertised a lot in London at the moment, and claims to combat pattern baldness in both men and women. It basically seems to be a nutritional pill, and the key ingredient in Nourkrin is a protein compound of marine extracts. It is is blended with an organic, soluble silica and vitamin C.

I would like to know your thoughts on whether this would help someone like me: 30 year old male, who is receding at the temples (norwood 2, not on crown), and has a history of male-pattern baldness on both sides of my family. I’m also looking at taking finasteride.

Thank you very much!

Nourkrin is as you described here, but I know almost nothing about these ingredients. I did some Google searching for it and came up with page after page of sites selling it, but nobody discussing it. Maybe you’ll have better luck in your own search, but I came up empty. Nothing else I can really add regarding the product you asked about, but I can advise you that you should have metrics taken (miniaturization) to see how bad your hair loss actually is, how it is progressing over time, and the value or non-value of this pill if you elect to take it.

Chemical Damage? – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

Hello Dr. Rassman. I experienced a sudden hair loss and breakage from strong chemicals. In the months since ive stopped using the chemicals there has been no further hair loss. But a few days after putting the chemicals on my hair I noticed that 1000’s of hair strands were markedly thinner. Is it possible that a chemical could just shrink the hair shaft permanently? Also the texture of my hair is different. If I stopped using the chemicals would my texture and hair shaft diameter return to normal or would the follicles continue to produce thinner and finer hair shafts?

I have addressed this question in a variety of forms (see: chemical damage). Please note that even though you think the cause is chemical, there is no substitute to getting a good examination in the hands of a good doctor who can look throughout your scalp at the condition of the other hairs on your scalp that do not seem to bother you.

Hair Loss InformationGNC Men’s Mega Men and Hair Loss? – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Hello, Dr.Rassman.
I want to ask does GNC Men’s Mega Men cause shedding or hairloss?

Drugstore.com – GNC Mega Men

Many forums say it contains too much B complex and some Saw Palmetto. By the way, is it benefit to take lots of B complex per day?

Block Quote

The GNC product contains DHEA, a hormone that is known to produce or accelerate hair loss. I do not have direct knowledge about shedding with Saw Palmetto or high doses of B complex vitamins.

Using Visine on The Scalp for Hair Loss Prevention? – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

Hello Doctor,

Since I moved to Calgary I’ve been losing hair like crazy. I’ve always been affected by hair loss, but was using Rogaine and I was happy. Since I moved here though, I’m losing hair like I’ve never exprienced before.

Anyhow, I heard about an idea of applying Visine to your scalp to prevent hair loss and cause hair regrowth. Have you heard about this idea before or have any info you could share with me?

Visine on the scalp? I never heard about that approach, but if I get emails from readers about this, I will post them here.

Hair loss is common when stress comes into play. For women who are prone to hair loss, a move like you just had can induce the hair loss — when it all calms down, the woman who loses hair this way should see it reverse. For men, the hair loss can be permanent.

Phosphorylase Kinase Inhibitor for Psoriasis – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

Hello Dr. Rassman,

How about the aid of a phosphorylase kinase inhibitor for the treatment of psoriasis? Could this work? A friend of mine, Dr. Madalene Heng has conducted significant research in this area. (http://psoriainfo.org/)

I do not know much about phosphorylase kinase inhibitors for the treatment of Psoriasis other than what I have read about it at both the site you recommended and at PubMed.gov

As a psoriasis victim myself, I might look into it further.

Burning on Scalp Months After Coloring Hair – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

Hi,
I;m really hoping you can help me. About 7 mths ago I had my hair coloured. Since then I have had a burning sensation on the right side of my head, my right ear and on the back of my neck. I have also noticed much more hair falling then I have seen before, my hair is starting to feel thinner and its scaring me to death.
I was very breifly examined by a dermatologist and she said it look like sebhorric dermatitis. I have used all the shampoos and the zinc spray she gave me and I still have no relief from the hair fall or the burning. I have no idea what to do. The top part of my scalp feels tender when I touch it. Is it possible I could be allergic to something in the shampoo? If you have any suggestions at all I would be so so greatful.
On a side note I have tried tea tree oil and the flakes seem to be almost gone, but still the burning and hair loss are there.
Please help

Since you started with a dermatologist, I would suggest that you go back. The symptoms you mentioned (burning on the right side of your head, ear and the back of your neck) could be a neurological problem. People who had hair coloring come to me with a wide variety of complaints that I often have difficulty relating to the hair coloring process. Sometimes the complaints are related to skin problem that are precipitated by the chemicals in the dying compounds used. Sometimes they may have nothing to do with the hair dying process or the chemicals used. Most professional stylists use commercially safe compounds.

The dermatologist can help you assess all of these issues.

Amino Acids to Treat Hair Loss? – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

hi doctor, i’m hearing that by taking amino acids such as arginine and lysine can stop hairloss and even grow hair back. is this true, there are alot of products which stimulate the body to produce more hgh. i’m 29 by the way and starting to thin for the last couple of years.

Amino acids are merely building blocks of protein. A healthy diet contains plenty of proteins, minerals, vitamins, and other nutritional ingredients. So taking amino acids is like taking supplements. Unless you are malnourished, it is my opinion that taking amino acids will not have any significant impact on your hair growth or hair loss. If you are concerned about your hair loss and would like to seek medical treatment or medical advice you can make an appointment with a good doctor.

Taking Herbs for Hair Loss – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

I am reading that natural herbs such as: saw palmetto, nettle sting root, and other products help hair to grow: such as brewer’s yeast, wheat germ oil and MSM will help hair to grow and help with DHT. Is this true? thank you.

RevolverThere may be value in some of these, but there is no clear proof of value here. If you want a DHT solution to its impact on hair loss, then Propecia (finasteride) is the best solution for men. Anything else is speculative. I tend to look at taking these remedies as if your hair follicles are playing Russian Roulette. Hairs die off the longer you play the game and if you use these remedies long enough, there may be none left when you take inventory because they are all dead or gone.

I Use Styling Wax — Does It Clog Pores, Causing Hair Loss – Balding Blog

Hi Doctor,

I am a 21 yr old Chinese male.

I have noticed quite a large amount of hair loss from me (it’s been on going for quite awhile now, perhaps months or a few years but I only become more concerned recently). I had rather thick hair so i was not worried until now. Although I can’t tell if my hair has thinned recently but I have become more self conscious about it, as the top seems ‘flatter’.

I know it is normal to lose 100 – 200 strands of hair daily, I don’t really count the strands that falls off daily so I have no idea if my hair loss is in that range, but it sure feels abnormal as i notice strands of hair on my clothings and around me quite often, and strands of hair always seems to fall out when I brush through my hair. My mother and brother also complains that places where I sit tends to have strands of hair left around the area.

I know from some posts in your blog that you say hair product does not cause hair loss, but I am rather concerned as I use styling wax(which is very difficult to wash off) on my hair for the past few years daily. I tend to rub them into my scalp(which I heard will clog up the pores and cause hair loss). Furthermore I get lazy sometimes and do not wash them all off. I have stopped using styling wax for the past 2 or 3 months, but the hair loss remains.

I had major surgery about 3 months back, but my hair loss problem is around even before that. I do not notice balding in my family or relatives.

What should I do? Thanks.

The heavy waxes can stick to the hair and when you try to get it off, it may continue sticking to the hair. When you comb hair that has heavy wax on it, I am sure that constant repetition of this can cause traction alopecia. You must wait out a period of 6 months to see what will happen. I think that a good examination of your scalp is important to understand what has happened and will show if you have genetic hair loss underlying the problem you are talking about.

Using Hair Oils And Protein Creams – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

i am 19. my hair is straight and fine…

my hair was usually very full and thick when i was younger. however, i have been using hair oils like amla, almond, amla and black seed.

i shampoo my hair daily with himalaya anti-dandruff shampoo because if i dont, my scalp becomes very itchy. and then i apply the oils after shampooig and keep it for day. is it alright to use hair oils daily? and is light liquid paraffin bad for the hair (i know that mineral oil and petroleum damage the hair)? sometimes i apply a generous amount of himalaya protein hair cream on my hair and scalp… i dont know how much to apply, maybe i am apply alot. basically, my hair is a little thin on the front and middle of my scalp. however, on the back and sides they are full…

i wanna know how to get my hair back. and if using hair oils and protein creams daily and in generous quantities have good/bad effects on my hair.

note: i have seen some improvement after using hair oils…

I am not sure what you are asking. The use of oils and creams on your hair will probably not hurt but the directions on the products will tell you how to use them — hopefully they are safe. The question should be: Will it help deal with male pattern hair loss? From genetic balding, your hair will likely not come back once it is lost and treatments like those that you are using may only slow down the correct way to stop the loss. There are drugs such as finasteride (Propecia) that may prevent further hair loss or may bring some hair back. However, you need to see a medical doctor for the correct diagnosis, get your hair mapped out for miniaturization to establish the diagnosis, and have a prescription to start Propecia if the diagnosis of genetic hair loss is confirmed. It is my medical opinion that the quantity of hair oil or creams that you are using is NOT likely the cause of your hair loss.
