Hairpod – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

I saw this article today on the internet. What are your thoughts on it?

Hairpod photo

“Hairpod … stimulates the user’s scalp with low frequency electric current”.

There will always be devices, potions, creams, shampoos, and other such creations for “magically” restoring hair. I am not aware of the Hairpod or its results, though I am familiar with the iPod (though unrelated to this).

I’m only posting this to show the readers this … uh, interesting… new hair device.

I Am Convinced A New Diet Will Regrow My Hair – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

Trying to research (and in the process, bypass all the websites advertising products claiming to be the “answer” for hair loss) a solution for my thinning spot. There has to be a biological reason this happens and, thus, a biochemical solution. In other words, I’m seeking a connection between foods I eat and regrowing the hair – a natural way that involves my diet rather than expensive pills or surgery. Are you aware of any research in this regard? Where can I find information about their findings?
Thank you!

There are many causes for hair loss and it is well understood. To date, the only “biochemical solution” they have found is a drug called finasteride (Propecia) which is approved by the FDA for the “biochemical” treatment of male pattern hair loss or male pattern baldness (MPB). You are also correct in stating that certain diets (such as poor nutrition) can lead to hair loss. Unfortunately, the only medical solution to MPB is either taking finasteride or getting a hair transplant. Nothing is guaranteed, and you can find out much more about Propecia, here.

You are under the impression that you are what you eat, and there is clearly truth to this concept, but the complexity of the thousands of vitamins, nutrients, protein, sugars, and other things in our diet weighted against the things that are wrong with us is a daunting task. Just above, I discussed the drug finasteride, but did you know that this substance we call finasteride was actually found in the diet of some primitive people? It was naturally in the food staple of their daily diet. Because they ate so much of it, the explorers that first found the primitive tribe noticed that there were no young boys — just what appeared to be girls. On further examination of this situation, they found many, many hermaphrodites in the population that came from ingestion of this ‘natural food’ substance. This later turned out to become finasteride, a drug used for men with prostate problems and/or hair loss. So here are some important lessons for the natural minded herbalist readership:

  1. Not all natural foods are safe. Arsenic is natural, but it can kill.
  2. There are many good things in what we eat. A good healthy diet will make us healthy.
  3. If we eat anything that is not well understood, then we should take the time to learn and understand the issues of safety and effectiveness if we expect some outcome from what we eat.
  4. There are many substances that work to produce effects we might want. Some natural substances have steroids in them and they may make us feel better, healthier and look more muscular, but the question that must be asked is what is the real costs of such substances? Steroids are harmful in the long term and are not good things to take whether it be natural or in pill form.
  5. Even things like Vitamin A which is healthy in low doses, can cause hair loss in high doses.

If you are concerned about your hair loss or thinning, you should first be evaluated by a hair transplant doctor to map your scalp for miniaturization and the pattern of your hair loss.

Finally, if you find this elusive “cure” to hair loss, please come see me. I would love to be your business partner!

Nioxin, Procerin, Bleaching, Laser – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

I am a 27-year-old black American male with European and Native American lineage. I have started noticing hair loss around 2 years ago. My hairline is receding in the corners of my scalp (starting the V) and I have noticed that the hair on top of my head is thinner (shorter) than the hair on the sides and back. Of course most other people don’t notice it but I think it is more so because either they don’t really pay attention or they want to say what they think I want to hear. I have started using Nioxin Shampoo and conditioner within the last month along with minoxidil on the top part of my head. I was wondering is this is a good solution or am I basically wasting my time. I use to take Procerin but I’m not sure that it ever worked. I still have a good amount of hair on the top of my head but I would really like to fill in the corner and make the top thicker. Also I want to bleach (maybe even dye) my hair and I was wondering would that accelerate my hair loss? Also, does laser therapy work? I just found this website today and I was really impressed with how genuine your responses seem. Thanks for your help.

Block Quote

As I’ve said previously, Nioxin makes a good set of products that are popular, but there appears to be nothing in it that will stop hair loss. I’ve also commented on Procerin and laser therapy previously. Good starting points for blog posts about lasers can be found here and here.

Dying your hair, when done in the hands of someone competent, should not have a negative impact on your hair. As long as there is not any chemical trauma, your hair should be fine.

Hair Loss InformationTrying 15% Minoxidil – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

I am a 46 year old balding man presently at class 5. I have tried minoxidil up to the 12.5% concentration (Xandrox) but has not worked for me. I also have had one transplant session of about 400 grafts (not NHI) but most of the grafts are gone and obviously am not happy with the result. I just wanted to know if you would recommend my continuing the 12.5% minoxidil or even try the 15% treatment just to slow down the balding process and keep me from going to class 6 or class 7.

Block Quote

Your question is troubling me. Transplanted hairs are permanant and very successful so if yours failed, something is wrong. It is also troubling that you only had 400 hair grafts when you state you are a Norwood Class 5. That would hardly have an impact on your appearance. If your hair transplant was a failure, it is my opinion that you should follow-up with your original hair transplant doctor to discuss the failure with him/her. There are instances where patients believe their hair transplant was a failure because they also had ongoing hair loss. Could that be your situation?

Furthermore, if minoxidil 5% or 12.5% didn’t work for you, what makes you think 15% will work? Minoxidil, like all drugs, has its limitations and higher concentrations may have adverse side effects. Depending on your medical history and a good diagnosis of hair loss, I would also consider finasteride (Propecia) as another option.

Any Essential Supplements For Hair Growth? – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

i was just curious if there there are any foods, vitamins, supplements, minerals that actually dont grow or restore hair (because that cant happen) but are essential in the growth and building of hair that maybe i could buy from a health foods store or take? thank you once again.

If you are healthy and have a normal diet, your dietary intake of vitamins and minerals is more than enough. A doctor will regularly recommend supplements for pregnant women or the elderly. There are no particular vitamins that I expect will grow hair if these vitamins are not deficient in your diet.

Tribestan and Propecia – Balding Blog

Dear Doctor,
Recently I have been prescribed with Tribestan to boost my testerone level. But i have been taking Propecia for a year now and the effect from propecia is good and i am a more confident man now of course with more hair too.

My question is can Tribestan be taken together with Propecia? will it cause more hairloss? or any side effects?

Thank in advance. Desperately needing a answer… Best Regards

Tribestan is not a medication. It is a natural supplement that is available over the counter without a prescription. Since Tribestan is not a FDA approved product, there is no medical evidence for its efficacy or its precise mechanism of action. There are endless internet sites that promote Tribestan (as I have found), but there are no formal FDA approved or medical data on Tribestan, nor are there any studies that show safety and / or effectiveness. For those reasons there is no way for me to tell if there would be adverse effects when taken with Propecia. There is no medical evidence.

I do not know your medical history to know how or why your “testosterone level” is low. Perhaps you should be seen by your primary care doctor for a complete physical.

I Want To Buy Your Products – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

I have been to a couple places and cannot probably do a hair transplant because my donor area has receded. I tried minoxidil (5mg.) and prostar but quit. Give it to me straight, your product will regrow hair on neckline and bangs beside crown, and its money back gaurentee. I just hit 50 what are my chances and my brothers are worse than I am.

I get emails like this every now and then, but I just wanted to point out that I do not sell any non-FDA-approved products for treating hair loss and what I do sell (Propecia) I sell at cost only to my patients as a courtesy for them). I am a physician taking great interest in my patients and in this field of hair transplantation. I make my living moving hair around from one part of the head (donor area) to other parts of the head (parts that are bald with the state of the art hair transplants that I pioneered) and I do it artistically. If you want frontal hair, filling in a bald area, or just a touch up, I might be able to help. See my website at: newhair.com

Regenix, Avodart, and Minoxidil – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

i’m 22 and have been thinning in the crown/back/top for about 3 years. i’ve used minox 5 % and propecia for a couple of years, switched to dutasteride 10 months ago…with no results.

i am going to continue the avodart…but i’ve recently started a regimen from Regenix out of LA. i was wondering if using minox 5 % once a day is enough to avoid a major shed? regenix took some hair samples and ‘formulated’ a treatment just for me. do you know if Regenix is worth my time and money? also, could it be that the avodart takes a while to start showing results? any advice is much appreciated.
thanks.

I am assuming that you are a male, not female. With that said, if you have genetic hair loss and it is progressing rapidly, then it sounds like you have real problems. I may sound like a broken record here, but you need your scalp mapped out for miniaturization and then get a working diagnosis.

Avodart, in theory, is as good or more potent than Propecia. Minoxidil must be used twice daily to get any reasonable effect. I do not know about the special formulations of Regenix you asked about. To me, it sounds like you are playing with fire with a blind-fold on. Please get a working diagnosis first so you will know what is really happening.

Using Styling Products with Toppik – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

I’m a 25 years old male, been losing some hair (in the front part of my scalp) over the last few years, but started taking propecia about 4 months ago and it seems to be working really well! Was wondering if using Rogaine as well would improve or accelerate the results…what would you recommend?

Also Toppik was just launched here in Mexico and I think I’ll give it a try to help the spots with thinning hair look thicker. However I’ve been trying to find information on whether I can use styling gel or wax after applying Toppik and I don’t seem to find anything. Do you think that would work?
Thanks a lot!

I generally do not recommend both Propecia and minoxidil at the same time in a young man. Start off with Propecia and wait 8 months or so before giving up. If it does the job, you have no need to use minoxidil. I don’t recommend using both at the same time, because then if you do see results you will not know which of the two gave you the results. Its just a matter of cost then, as you will end up staying on both just to keep what you have regrown. If you know which one works by trying them separately, you’ll save money in the end.

Topical scalp coverings like Toppik are great to accomplish the appearance of fullness behind hair that already exisits. Use any styling aid that works for you.

Hair Loss InformationScalpMed Causing Shedding? – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

I am a 38 year old mail in good health and good physical condition, however like most men my hair has begun to thin. I saw the infomercial for “ScalpMed” and it looked promising, so I thought…what the heck, i’ll give it a try. Now, my question is this, it appears that I shed more hairs in the morning when I wash my hair (using a a ph balanced DHT reducing shampoo) after using this product. Can minoxidil cause one to shed more hair since I know this product contains this? If I don’t use scalpmed at night, the next morning when I wash my hair I have fewer hairs in the tub- about 14 without Scalpmed, and 20-40 with Scalpmed).

I also would like to make a comment to the medical industry. If one wants to try and find a cure for baldness, maybe they should research the italians or greek bloodline and see why the majority of those men have their hair way into their 40’s, 50’s, if not later years. Maybe they should research those genetics???

Thanks for your time and insight.

It is normal for one to lose 100 to 150 hairs a day. It is also normal for one to be concerned about hair loss and be proactive as you to try with products such as “ScalpMed”. Unfortunately there is no way to tell if these products actually work. That is why most are not sold as medications or FDA approved products. If ScalpMed is causing you to lose hair, I can not comment on it for there is no real information on the issues of safety or effectiveness.

Minoxidil has been studied as a topical treatment and shows good promise of hair growth in some individuals. To date, there are only two medically proven ways to treat male pattern baldness where it is not really ‘hit or miss’.

  1. Hair transplant, which works 99.9% of the time
  2. Propecia drug regimen (which may or may not work for you but it met strict FDA requirements) is more reliable, the earlier the hair loss is seen. In men under 30 with thinning and not recession, the reversal in my experience is significant. Reversal of a receding hairline, however, is highly unusual (even in the young man). The key to this drug is to start on it early if you have genetic balding and get to the hair while it is miniaturizing and before it falls out.

To more specifically answer your question, counting 14 vs 20 hairs lost per day seems insignificant (at least from a medical perspective). As stated, we normally lose on the average 100 to 150 hairs a day. ScalpMed may be contributing to the extra 6 hairs that you are losing, but there is no way to really tell.

Finally, the hair loss gene spans all races and cultures. The study of Italians and Greeks has already been done and there it still almost 50% of men in these ethnic patterns that have hair loss.
