How Much Time Should There Be In Between Transplant Procedures? – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

Dear doctor,

last week i underwent a 2500 grafts transplant to my front and sides of the head, however i still need another 2000 grafts to cover the
crown.

my question is – what is the average time gap between two transplant operations ?? when should i go in for the second tranplant?

Also is it necessary that i take medication after these transplants.

The spacing of hair transplant procedures should be at least 8 months apart to allow the grafts to grow from the first session. I always tell my patients that when they see the growth, they will know:

  1. If another hair transplant is needed, and…
  2. Where these grafts are needed in the second session

The only medication I recommend after a transplant is Propecia to arrest or slow the progressive nature of genetic hair loss. I suggest taking the medication before the transplant as well.

Avodart vs Hair Transplant – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

I was wondering if you give prescriptions for avodart. I had some frontal transplants in early 90’s but continued to lose behind transplant..i now wear a hair system and Have learned to live with it…i need to keep what hair i have in the back and on the crown so my systems do not have to be made any larger..I have been doing alot of research about avaodart..i was able to get a sample pack (2 weeks) from a dr friend..but need prescription to get more…

Avodart (dutasteride) should not be the first line for you unless you are sure that Propecia (finasteride) is not working. I would be happy to evaluate you, but the few times I have prescribed Avodart, I had good reason to do it. The side effects on Avodart are more than the side effects of Propecia. If you have a void now developing behind the old transplants, have you considered fixing this (it is relatively easy)? It may allow you to get rid of your hair system. In any event, you need to have miniaturization analysis before any treatment to know what is happening to you.

Regrowing Hair on a Scar – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

I have this bump on my scalp for years so i decided it to get it removed. so now i got a scar and hair doesnt grow on it. can you regrow hair on a scar and if it can be done when u cut your hair will hair grow back again? please help

Scars can be effectively transplanted. The hair that grows is the hair that was moved, not the original hair that was there before.

I Want My Hairline Lowered an Inch – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

(female)
I’m 16 years old born with a high hairline just about 3 inches. I’ve saved about $5,000 to get the procedure to lower my hairline and was wondering about how much would it be to take off half an inch to an inch. i have a widows peak and wonder if you can fix that too. what would be an estimate and could there be any payment plans. i’d love to have this procedure done before i turn 21.

Block Quote

The fee for a hairline lowering procedure is $8,000 (icludes all anesthesia and facility charges). The hairline lowering procedure is like a reverse brow lift and this is often the way women get a lower hairline. The widow’s peak would have to be assessed separately.

Alternatively, hair transplants could lower the hairline as well. This is, of course, what we do regularly with men and the fees are based upon how much hair is moved (price per graft). I would be happy to review your case confidentially if you send in a picture. Please reference this post if sending.

My Doctor Said There is 0% Chance My Transplants Will Not Grow – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Dr. Rassman,

How likely is it that transplanted grafts do not survive after the surgery? I’ve heard from my doctor that there is virtually 0% chance that they will not grow, but I have seen no evidence of new growth at over one year from my surgery so I am at a loss to explain my outcome. Thanks.

Block Quote

There is never certainty in anything in this world. Hair transplants usually grow (greater than 99% of patients will experience good growth) provided that the doctor and team perform the surgery correctly. If you have not had growth one year after a hair transplant, then something went wrong. Get a second opinion and you will then know.

Do You Think Hair Transplantation will Become a Defunct Practice? – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

Doctor Rassman,

Do you believe that hair transplantation will ever become a defunct practice (due to a cure or a commercially viable alternative)? Do you believe this will happen in YOUR lifetime?

If there is a medical cure for balding (medicine, cloning, etc), I think I would become a very rich man. After all, who else is better equipped to treat balding than the doctors who are already in the practice? I should hope that there will be a cure in my lifetime!

Did I Get an Infection After My Hair Transplant? – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

I’m a female, 41 years old.I underwent hair transplantation 10 days ago.Everything was fine, but 2 days ago I started with a clear discharge from the site of the implants. It is oozing non stop now and red. I saw my Dr.yesterday.He assured me it was not infected…How so ????? If it is draining it could not be right.I’m worried sick…Should I be taking antibiotics ?????

You are doing the right thing by seeing your doctor. It is impossible for me to give you any medical advice without examining you myself. Please follow up with your doctor and ask him these questions or if you are not satisfied, get a second opinion. Certainly, recipient sites should not be draining at any time, especially 10 days out of a hair transplant surgery.

I Experienced Shock Loss After My 2nd Transplant – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

Please talk about shock loss to grafted hair as I lost a lot 10 days ago in my second operation. What can I expect generally in this situation?

Shock loss is the state of losing miniaturized hair as a result of stimulation from surgery or any other stress. It is most commonly seen after the first hair transplant in patients who have significant miniaturization in the area. Younger patients are more susceptible to this condition. Widespread use of finasteride has significantly minimized the occurrence of this condition within the last few years.

Grafted hair is considered permanent and is resistant to shock loss. If you lose any of your hair at all, it would be the native miniaturized hair in the recipient area, not the transplanted ones. In my 16 years of doing this, I saw transplanted hair lost due to shock loss about 5 times and each and every time the hair came back. This would not necessarily be the case if the hair was impacted and miniaturized, and that is why the risks are there for the first transplant, not the subsequent ones.

Hair Loss InformationTemple Hair Transplanted in the Wrong Direction (with Photos) – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

This man came to see me after he had a hair transplant with an unbalanced hairline. His temples were also transplanted with the hair placed perpendicular to the normal direction. I recommended that we extract these hairs using FUE and then transplant them in the correct direction. I just wanted to show how important it is for the doctor you choose to actually have an understanding of the direction hair naturally grows in, so that you can have the most natural looking results possible. Slightly Thinning at 16 — My Parents are Fine With Me Having a Transplant – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

Hi, I am 16 years of age, I have a full head of hair, however i notice slight thinning nearer to the temple, but not too much thinning, just light hairs. I am using products to strengthen it though. I was just asking if it is possible to get a FUE hair transplant to straighten my hairline to have a juvenile hairline?

Is it possible to have one, at my age, and my parents are fine with me going through the procedure?

Age sixteen is too early for presence of male pattern hair loss, but it does occur at rare times. You need to be seen and examined by a hair loss doctor for possibility of other types of hair loss. If you are only seeing some thinning in the frontal hairline, you may be experiencing early maturing of the hairline. If this is the case you have to wait until your hairline maturation completes. If it progresses toward male pattern baldness, then medical treatment would be your first step in managing this condition and you absolutely should get your hair mapped out for miniaturization to put a metric for following the progression. By any means, hair transplant is rarely recommended at your age.
