Flaking Scalp After Hair Transplants? – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Dear Doctor:
I have had two hair transplants, the latest one being last year. After each one, I had and still have skin flakes that shed off my scalp everyday. Is this a side effect of the transplants? And what can I do to stop it? An ordinary dandruff shampoo won’t work.

I also have a habit of picking the small oil deposits out of my scalp which sometimes is accompanied by a hair. The hair club for men told that that the oil deposits sometimes cut the blood/oxygen flow to the hair follicle. Nevertheless, I probably should stop doing this right? Are there any bad consequences to it?

Thanks!

If you do not wash your hair vigorously after a hair transplant, you will have crusting that may last for a month or more. Dry skin that may follow a hair transplant requires good skin care. Good hygiene is also critical. In over 90% of my patients, I get the crusts off in the first day following a hair transplant.

You should get advice on the scalp treatments from your hair transplant doctor, who should be interested in your recovery. The same goes for the picking you are doing, which is dangerous because it sets you up for folliculitis, particularly after a hair transplant when the skin is fragile. See your doctor!

Shock Loss and No Feeling in Scalp for Months After Transplant – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

I have had two hair transplants. I was never bald but have thinning hair. After the transplants my head had no feeling on top for about six to seven months. Seems it made me lose as much hair as I got from the transplants. There was a doctor there but he did not do any of the work other then the cut for the hair grafts. What if any tests I can have done before going to a different doctor. I feel it was a waste of money.

Were you on Propecia (finasteride) prior to the surgery? If not and you are young, you should have been taking the drug, as the loss of hair after the transplant is a consequence of young men who are not protected with finasteride. Numbness to some degree is normal, but your sensation should return in a few weeks/months. I have seen some clinics that employ doctors as technicians who just do the ‘cutting’ and take no responsibility for overall patient management. If this is what you had, it may have been a “waste of money” for you (that is, if you did not see any cosmetic benefit from your surgery). There is also the negative value of having hair moved that did not survive (if it did not grow then it must be dead). That is why I stress the importance of a Master Plan when planning your surgery and being able to trust your surgeon. You may want to get another opinion with an examination by a competent and honest doctor. As I have said before, Let the Buyer Beware!

Hair Loss InformationThe Great American Dream Vote Winner Update (Video) – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

College student Russ Jowell’s dream was to have a head of hair again, and as the winner of ABC TV’s “The Great American Dream Vote”, his dream was granted by the New Hair Institute in the form of hair transplantation surgery.

I sat down to speak with him the day after his surgery so he could tell the viewing audience what it’s like to win all that money, the car, and the rest of the amazing prizes. Plus, find out what his hair transplant surgery experience was like and how his life has changed since the show. Look at him and see if you can tell that he had a hair transplant the day before.

Transplanting the Frontal Corner, 6 Months Post-Op (with Photos) – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

See the dramatic change in just one session to the right frontal hairline of this celebrity (nameless of course). His hair is brown and medium fine thickness with dense packing of the grafts just behind the hairline. Please note that the hairline is not an actual line, and there is a transition zone that takes you from forehead to the thicker hair so that this does not look like a transplanted hairline. That is where the ‘art’ comes into play. When looking at the densitometer (magnified view of the scalp hair), I can see that there is still new hair just starting to grow from the scalp so that in another 2 months or so, he should show even greater fullness than he shows here. I placed about 500 follicular units in this corner.

The photo on the left is before, the two photos on the right is after 6 months. Click the photos to enlarge.

Splitting Follicles? – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

Hi!

Please review this surgery for me. http://www.ghoclinicpraha.cz/hair-loss/

What do u have to say about techniques claiming to split follicles and later transplant them sucessfully back on to head?

The GHO method is, I believe, the standard FUE procedure that I published in 2002. Dr. Gho just named it after himself. I have heard him speak and have spoken with him, so I use this as my authority on making such statements. There is a tendency to infer more than there is in his marketing efforts. Splitting hairs takes on many meaning. Dr. Kim in Japan/Korea cut hair follicles in sections, trying to get more than one hair for each. He failed to do so, often yielding hairs with less bulk when they regrow. Splitting hairs down the center rarely produces one hair, let alone two or more. Don’t believe everything you read on a website.

When Are My New Grafts Secure? – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

How long until the new grafts are secure and safe from loss?

For example, If I take a week off from work and return to work on day 7 post-op, are the new grafts secure?

Beyond day 7 post-op, is there anything in normal day to day activities that can damage the new grafts (excluding any type of catastrophic accident)?

Block Quote

Unless you actively pick at the grafts, the newly transplanted grafts are generally secure after the first 24-48 hours. If there are scabs on them, they can be pulled out by pulling on the scabs, so we always wash any scabbing away so that there is no graft anchoring to the scabs. Normal day to day activity should not affect the grafts, unless your normal day to day activity requires you to wear abrasive helmets or bounce soccer balls on your head… you get the idea.

Hair Loss InformationHair Transplant Results Just Days After Surgery (with Photos) – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

I wanted to show some very early after from two patients that came in today. Both patients have given me permission to post their photos, and I appreciate them allowing me to do so. From time to time I post photos of patients just days or weeks after surgery, and I hope these types of posts help to answer one of the more popular questions I receive almost daily — “What will my head look like right after surgery?! I need to get back to work and I don’t want anyone to know!

Patient 1 — 1 day after surgery:
This young man had around 1500 grafts placed in the crown and around 600 grafts in the front just 1 day ago. His skin is white and hair is blonde. There is almost no swelling and no sign of the surgery other than a faint pink hue which should go away for him in a day or two.

Here are two photos of his hairline. Click the photos to enlarge.

Patient 2 — 10 days after surgery:

This patient had frontal work to drop the corners of his hairline. Just 10 days out after 1040 grafts and you can barely see anything. Note that I had to hold his hair back on the left corner just to show the transplanted area. His hair naturally falls over that area, and as such, it provided him a perfect cover during the first day or two when his skin was pink in the transplanted area.

Very Thin Hair on Sides and Back — Is Body Hair Transplantation a Possibility? – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

my body is very hairy (face, chest, back, etc). will taking any of these medications increase body hair? Since I hardly have any donor hair on my head, is body hair transplant a possibility? Where can I get good information on this subject?

Thanks for your assistance.

Best regards

I have written about body hair transplants extensively in this blog (search for body hair transplants). Be very careful with body hair transplants; the failure rate is very high.

I would be concerned that if your hair is see-through on the sides and back of your head (I assume that is what you mean by having little donor hair), that you may have Diffuse Unpatterned Alopecia (DUPA).
