Body Hair Transplant Results – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Hello doctor, long time no talk. I recently found this on the internet regarding a hair transplant where the patient took hair from his leg and arm. The results look good.

Caution: Some pictures might be a bit bloody for some readers

Also, I notice that a lot of patients who have HT’s seem to grow their hair longer after the transplant and keep it that way. Is it because they want to cover up the other balding areas with the long hair? Can you get a HT and keep your hair short and still have that “full look?”

I am having difficulty with the first picture on the referenced site. This is not a hair transplant, but someone with a thick, natural head of hair. From a legal point of view, the inference that this representation of a transplant is fraudulent and violates consumer laws in most states. It may have just been an example of what the patient wanted, but to have it presented in the same reference with before and after photos is poor form.

Many hair transplant patients elect to comb their hair back or to the sides and keep it long. Longer hair covers better, but with good densities transplanted, short hair is not unreasonable. I tell patients that when they get a hair transplant, they create the illusion of hair, not the reality of it. Long hair with good grooming goes a long way to do this. The illusion I am talking about is basic to the math in hair demand/supply hair economics (see Patient’s Guide — How Many Grafts Will I Need?). If a person loses 60,000 hairs and gets a transplant that makes him look good with 10,000 hairs, then this is clearly an illusion, not reality. I have found that in people with good hair characteristics, low contrast hair to skin color, wavy, and coarse hair can get great results with as little as 20% of their hair returned through transplants. That, of course, requires an artistic surgeon and the budget to afford the process.

With regard to your situation with 15 hair transplant procedures, you may be running out of hair. Body hair may be a solution, but there really is not good data on it so you would have to be a guinea pig for human experimentation. This is not standard care. I would give you a one on one consultation if you are in the California area.

Hair Loss InformationPost-Op Graft Care – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Hello-

It seems like every HT Doctor recommends someting differenet for post-op care of the new grafts…..such as…..Biotin Spray…..Saline Spray…..Graftcyte….Vitamin E Oil…..to nothing….etc.

What do you recommend for post-op care of the grafts?

Thanks

Ritual danceYou are correct. Nearly every hair transplant doctor seems to recommend something different. There are no scientific studies that indicate that one post operative care is better than the other.

It is important to note the most critical part of a hair transplant surgery is during the procedure itself (the peri-operative care). Making sure that the surgical staff kept the grafts moist, wet, and cool at all times so they have the maximum chance at survival. Once the grafts have been transplanted in to the recipient area, it should be fine. All of the post-operative care is not as important as the peri-operative care. Even if you do nothing to at all, the transplanted hair should grow just as well. In my practice, I make sure the recipient sites are kept clean with daily washings with a mild soap. For over 15 years, we’ve consistently had great results! Perhaps it was the ritualistic hair growth dance and chanting I teach to all my patients. Ha!

Hair Loss InformationI Don’t Want a Hairy Neck Anyway, So Can I Transplant Neck Hair to the Scalp? – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

I am a 22 year old male who has started receding. I have a lot of unwanted ‘neck hair’ that grows on the back of my neck below the hair line. Could it be used in a hair transplant as ‘filler’? The hair doesn’t grow and long or think as normal hair though.

Block Quote

I often get this question asked to me during office consultations. Unfortunately, neck hair is not considered permanent, as the hair on the back of your scalp is. Neck hair is different. Many men lose neck hair as they age. Thus, while you can have a neck hair transplantation, you risk losing it as you get older. Then there is the issue of the punctate scars left behind, whihc would look like white dots (from the FUE) on a shaved neck. It would not be a wise investment on your part.

Hair Loss InformationMy Friend Was Very Sick After He Had a Hair Transplant – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Hi. I just wanted to know if you have a hair transplant most surgeons tell you after 3 months the transplanted hair start growing. Is it possible it could take longer and if so how long would be the maximum?

My friend had a 3000 graft trasplant done and its been over 4 months, but not much has happened. He says he was very sick on the 2nd day after surgery and the pressure going to his head from vomiting made him feel as if the grafts were going to pop out. Is it possible something could have gone wrong due to vomiting? Thanks for your time.

SickSome people can have some side effects of drugs that are used for sedation after a hair transplant. Every medication has side effects, but most of the medications we use have few detectable side effects at the doses we utilize. If there are any lingering effects from these drugs, they may last a day or two at most. There has been a rare occasion where a patient was recently sick with the flu just before a transplant, so it would be logical that the same thing could happen after a hair transplant. Perhaps he caught the flu and it was coincidence. I really can’t tell you, as I have no idea.

Concerning your friend, hair starts growing at between 1-5 months after a transplant. I doubt that your friend lost any grafts or did any damage from being sick after the transplant.

Hair Loss InformationScalp Massage After Hair Transplant – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

i am a male who had approx. 1800 grafts 4 months ago. i have yet to see growth of any kind. about 2 weeks after i had the procedure done, my girlfriend gave me a scalp massage. none of the grafts were lost as a result, but could damage have been done and could this be the reason i haven’s seen any growth yet?

We’ve studied pulling hair within the first few days after the surgery, and our studies have shown that you can not dislodge hair grafts after the eschar (scabs) are gone. The persistence of eschars is a matter of how well you wash your hair after the surgery. Good washing techniques make the scabs disappear faster. I doubt your girlfriend damaged your hair with scalp massage. Give it a few more months and you should see new hair sprouting (it takes 3-5 months for most of the hair to start growing after a hair transplant).

Can You Place Grafts Between Growing Full Hairs? – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Dear Doctor Rassman,
I have very full hair on my head, pretty long, but the forehead starts getting lighter. Also in between I do not like that it starts shining through and becomes thinner. Is there a chance even to put grafts in between of the growing full hair just to make the appearance even fuller? Also I would like to think about working on the receding hairline.

I appreciate your coming back to me and remain with kindest regards

It is hard to answer your question, because I do not know what you are seeing. If you get your hair mapped out for miniaturization we might know what it is that you are seeing. Is this the early stages of thinning genetic hair loss? Without quantifying the miniaturization, I can not help you.

Generally, placing transplanted hair next to healthy hair does little damage, but it is possible that you could damage any hairs that are miniaturizing. Most people do not ask for more thickness if they have their normal hair with its full bulk present, so I am going to assume that you are miniaturizing in the area you want to thicken up, which would change my answer to your question as yes, your miniaturized hair can be permanently damaged from a transplant that is done without regard to a proper Master Plan for your hair loss.

We commonly see hair transplants done in “normal” hair areas. This occurs when a doctor ‘sells’ a transplant to make money and places transplants on the entire head when only a part of the head is bald. Unfortunately, I see this done too often, even in Los Angeles. The other day, I had a patient come to see me who maybe needed 800 grafts, but he was sold over 3000 grafts at another clinic, which was transplanted over a year ago. To make matters worse, of the 800 that should have been placed in the frontal hairline to thicken it, less than half of that number grew there. The other 2200+ grafts were put into other parts of his normal scalp. Other than the loss of his money charged for the unnecessary surgery, there was no damage to the normal transplanted hair throughout his head. Again, my motto is: Let the Buyer Beware!

12 Days After Transplant, Will Running or Weightlifting Harm the Grafts? – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

I recieved a hair transplant and on the 12th day after the transplant worked up a heavy sweat br running. Could that have harmed the grafts? I was also wondering when I can lift weights again. Will lifting harm the grafts? Thanks!

Block Quote

At 12 days after a hair transplant, nothing can really damage your grafts. The only thing that may be affected by heavy exercise is the donor area scar. You need to avoid heavy weight lifting activity or exercise that increases the tension on the closed wound edges if you had hair transplant through a strip procedure.

FUE for 21 Year Old – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

I was Just wondering why you wouldn’t advise FUE at the age of 21 ? What is your advice? Kind Regards!

Block Quote

There is no recommended age for FUE, as opposed to a regular strip hair transplant procedure. The issue for a 21 year old is knowing what are we treating and finding out where the is balding going. In most 21 year olds, we really do not have a clue.

What is the FUG in Hair Transplantation? – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Is the FUG different from the other hair transplant method. Does FUG uses strips from the back also? I may wish to have a camera sent for a view and consulatation. I will discuss that with you after learning the answer to these questions. Thanks,

Block Quote

I’m under the impression that the FUG transplants you’re talking about are identical to Follicular Unit Transplants. The harvesting method for Follicular Unit Transplants are either through strip harvesting or Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE). It is a good idea to send me photographs and I can give you a consultation either over the phone or through the internet. Please reference this blog posting when sending photos.

Hair Loss InformationDense Packing of Grafts – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Hi Dr…. is it really possible to pack 70 to 120 cm2 in a hair transplant???? Please let me know because a doc told me he can do this….

Block Quote

Some people can do the impossible. Putting that density together is crazy. The normal density is 100 follicular units per square cm, so why put in a number that is greater than normal? The real issue here is not if it can be done, but whether or not they will actually grow. What you are hearing/reading are stupid comments by an ignorant doctor.
