I’ve Seen Significant Hairline Recession Since Starting Finasteride Last Week – Balding Blog

Hi, I’d like to start by thanking you for your blog. I’ve been reading since for around 4 months since I first suspected I may be balding. I’m 20 years old and have long, thin hair. Because it is thin and I have always had a fringe I fear it is more noticable. My father is bald and my brother has also always had thin hair, but he doesn’t seem to be suffering any loss despite being 2 years older than me.

I have been on Finpecia for just over a week and have noticed significant thinning of my hairline above my forehead. I was wondering if it was normal for it to accelerate so quickly after starting to take the pills? Is it normal for my ’shedding period’ to commence this quickly? Also, I know it probably varies from person to person but I was wondering if you could give me any idea as to how much hair I should expect to lose during this period? Do people actually lose ALL their hair during this period?

Thank you.

RainyLet’s say you were visiting Los Angeles and when you arrived, it started raining and kept doing so for nearly a week straight. You might then conclude that L.A. is a rainy city. Of course, Los Angeles generally gets around 15 inches of rain per year, so you really can not tell anything by looking at just a week of weather. The same analogy applies for your hair loss experience.

Your issue is not normal and I highly doubt it is related to a medication, as you have been on it only ONE week! If anything, it’s possible that you’re just paying more attention to your frontal hairline and are noticing what was always there (or not there).

Family Genetics, Measuring the Mature Hairline – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Hello,

Thank you for taking the time to write this blog. I have two questions. First, how much truth is there in the genetics for hair loss comes from your mother’s father? If not completely, what role do your father’s genetics play?

Secondly, not to be too literal in what you’ve stated regarding measuring the mature hairline, but when you say it should rise about 1.5 to 2 times higher, does that mean from a center point used in measuring the midpoint of the hairline? I’ve included pics (feel free to publish), including one where I’m holding a ruler to show how I’ve been measuring my corners. My hairline is about 5/8″ from the midpoint and about 1 1/8″. What is that, about a Norwood 2?

Thank you for all the work you do.

Hair loss genes may be passed on from mother, father, or both. I realize many people believe it follows more from the mother’s side, but that is not an absolute fact. I’d say if anything, it favors the maternal side only 52% of the time, compared to the paternal side in 48% of cases. Statistically it is insignificant.

Your frontal pattern shows early erosion and a movement in the direction of a mature hairline, as the leading edge is thinning and the corners are a good one inch from the frontalis muscle in the corners. I would assume that you are under 29 years old. Everyone’s hairline is different and there is no absolute math or measurement to say precisely where your hairline should be, but for a mature hairline the picture here shows its location well.

And yeah, Norwood class 2 sounds about right. Unless you’re seeing loss on other areas of the scalp, I wouldn’t be concerned about your hair loss at this point.

Hair Loss InformationHairline Lowering for African Hair Types – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Hello, I am an African- American 18-year-old with a very high forehead. I was wondering if the hairline lowering procedure would be successful because of my hair texture. Also, I have had numerous perms in my lifetime and will continue on with perming my hair.

Block Quote

Everyone is different and there’s no way I can tell you about success or failures without at least an examination. The texture of your hair doesn’t rule you out, though.

If you are talking about actually lowering the hairline with a brow-dropping procedure then you need to be evaluated by a surgeon that does these. Many plastic surgeons offer this procedure. If you want to consider doing this with hair transplants, then you (again) need to be evaluated by an expert hair transplant surgeon like us.

In the News – Singer Tom Jones Has a New Hairline? – Balding Blog

Snippet from the article:

Last year he decided to give up the dark hair dye and grow old naturally with silver locks.

But it seems Tom Jones hasn’t completely given up on his quest to look youthful.

His once receding hairline appears to have been transformed into a full thick mop, sparking speculation that he’s had a hair transplant.

The 70-year-old, now fit for a L’Oreal advertisement, was also showing off a healthy tan as he was pictured after appearing on the Late Show with David Letterman at the Ed Sullivan Theatre in New York.

Tom Jones

We’ve written in the past about the changing hair color of Tom Jones, but it appears he’s gotten himself a new hairline. It’s difficult to tell from the photos shown in the article since they aren’t really focused on the hair, but the thicker looking hairline could be caused by a hair transplant, a wig, the use of concealers, or even some creative styling.

What do you think?

There’s many possible causes of female hair loss, including birth control, stress, malnutrition, iron levels, etc, etc. You can learn more about this here. You should talk to your doctor about this and get a parent involved. There’s no easy answer I can give you, unfortunately.

Receding Hairline from Hormone Imbalance or Thyroid Problem? – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Hello,
Can a hormone imbalance or a thyroid problem cause hair loss in the form of a severe receding hairline or would hair loss from a thyroid condition or a hormone imbalance cause loss throughout the scalp.

thank you

Block Quote

Low thyroid levels can cause hair thinning and brittle, dry hair (plus other non-hair-related symptoms), but it does not necessarily cause a receding hairline. Receding hairlines are mainly a genetic presentation of androgenic alopecia seen in men.

Hormone imbalance in itself does not necessarily cause hair loss… and there are hundreds of hormones to pick from!

Do People Actually Care About a Man’s Hairline? – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Before I begin, I want to thank you for taking the time to answer all these questions. You and your staff are tremendous!

My question is what is/are the best hair products (etc. gel, mousse) to use after receiving a hair transplant over a year ago?

I have a receding hair and have trouble styling my hair so I ALWAYS wear a hat. I have no confidence in myself and extremely self-conscious about what others think. In your opinion and stories that you might have heard, do people, peers, or women actually notice or care about a man’s hairline?

Thank You!

Block Quote

I believe that most of the readers would answer your question with a strong YES — people do notice. Today, I met with two men separately (20 and 25 years old). The 20 year old man still had his juvenile hairline, but there is evidence that one one side is moving to a mature hairline. The 25 year old has lost his juvenile hairline and now has the leading edge about 1/4 inch above where it belongs. One side is slightly worse than the other side. Both men had strong family histories of balding and both were very handsome. They felt strongly that the changes that had started to see had impacted their self image. Both look, from a distance, to have a great head of hair and neither man had any see-through appearance.

I also met with a 83 year old who recently lost his wife to breast cancer. He started dating again and was concerned that his receded frontal hairline made him look older than he thought he should look like.

So do people notice or care? Absolutely!

As for the best hair products to use following a hair transplant — really, styling aides are best evaluated by trial and error or by your local hair stylist.

I Want My Juvenile Hairline Back! – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

I am 25 years old and, for the past several years, I have had a mature hairline (rather than a juvenile hairline). But, there is no evidence that i am going bald elsewhere. If, in another few years, I appear to not be going bald, I am wondering if repairing my juvenile hairline would be an option, to make me look like I did as a teenager?

I really don’t mind – Bill Clinton, Ronald Reagan, a lot of movie stars, Asians, etc. – all have/had juvenile hairlines and it looks great on them. Would this be a possibility?

Thanks

Block Quote

Ronald ReaganAs long as you know what you want and have realistic expectations, there is no problem with having a juvenile hairline. The doctor should do their best to understand that you will not have further balding (remember, your donor hair is limited) and you would be willing to accept the Bill Clinton or Ronald Reagan look.

The mature hairline is normal, but if you insist on having your juvenile hairline back it is entirely possible. After all this is a cosmetic surgery!

By the way, are you considering running for the next President?

Hair Loss InformationIs My Hairline Receding Because of High Iron in the Water? – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Hello Doctor, This is a hairline receding question. I have witnessed hair thinning and the hairline receding on the far right side of the temple. I’m certain that the same is making it’s way to the otherside and I’m not quite sure what to make of it. I am 25 years old and this thinning has gained pace ever since I moved to the eastern part of the country, some people say it’s because of the high iron content in the water here while others say it’s because I travel a lot being in marketing.

I have dense thick hair but this thinning is occuring rather quickly. We don’t have many good doctors where I’m currently working which is why I’m a bit hesitant to take their advice. I would really appreciate if you could help me out with this. Thanks.

Block Quote

WaterWhile I can’t positively say what is causing your hair loss, my educated assumption would be that this is your genetics…. not iron levels in the water. It’s not uncommon for one side of the hairline to recede before the other, and while stress from travel might contribute to acceleration of the loss, I’d expect this is simply your genetics at play.

There are two proven medications to treat hair loss in men — Propecia (finasteride 1mg) and Rogaine (minoxidil). Propecia is by prescription only and both medications do have their limitations. In other words, you shouldn’t expect full regrowth (particularly in the hairline), but the hair loss may be halted from progressing for some time.

Female Mature Hairline? – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Is there such a thing a female mature hairline ? It seems quite common for a woman in her mid-twenties/thirties to have a larger forehead than she did in her teens, like Britney Spears or Cameron Diaz seem to have for instance. Or is this just the effect of using hair extensions, harsh treatments and the like over a long period of time ?

Block Quote

Britney Spears shaved headI do not believe that there is a maturing hairline for women, but some form of reshaping of the hairline may be seen.

In women who have had considerable plastic surgery, the corners of the frontal hairline often thin so significantly that I perform fill-in procedures for that area. Another possibility is as you suggested — traction alopecia can develop from the tight pulling caused by hair extensions, wigs, weaves, and similar.

Finally, some women are also just born with a higher hairline, and it’s possible that wearing wigs or professionally styled hair made it hard to notice in these celebrities’ younger years.
