My Hairline Matured at Age 17, Now It Started Changing Again At Age 36 – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

Hi Doctor,
I asked you a question a few months ago and recently saw your answer posted on this blog. I’m afaid my question was misunderstood. I am 36 years old, and have been worried about my hairline since the age of 16. I had no idea about a mature hairline which I developed between the age of 15 and 17. Now at 36yrs old, I notice a very slight change on one side of my hairline. Do our hairlines change slightly as we get older? My hairline has been exactly the same for twenty years, and only recently do I see a slight change. My hair is very thick, and my hairline looks as good as the patients you’ve given transplants. Could it be that my hairline didn’t finish maturing yet?

I can imagine that some further changes in hairlines in non-balding men does occur with age. If it bothers you, it can most likely be fixed with hair transplants, but if you are just curious, you can follow any further changes and act when and if it does bother you.

Does a Hairline Visibly Mature? – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

I have an interesting question about the mature hairline:

When a hairline is “maturing” (receding of the hairline, like in your other article) , does it happen just like that (over a period of time of course) or can the person also SEE the miniaturization of the hair happening? (ex; under a bright light)

Thanks in advance

Sure, you can see and even feel the thinning miniaturized hair some of the time. Most men and women who are losing hair will comment that they notice their hair “feels” thinner in diameter and it often slows down its growth; maybe even stops growing before it falls out. The maturing hairline usually occurs prior to the age of 29 and may take as long as 10 years to appear.

Hair Loss InformationWhat Is a Hairline Lowering Procedure? – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

I’m 17 year old female. I have had a high forehead since I can remember. I’m interested in the hairline lowering. What exactly are the procedures? Do you use my own hair? I have curly hair, how long after the surgery are you able to do hairstyles? How much is it to lower about an 1 inch?

Block Quote

The amount of lowering is about an inch, depending on the looseness of your scalp. A hairline lowering procedure is similar to a brow lift, excepting instead of pulling the scalp higher, it is lowered. Recovery is very fast and within a week. You should be able to have your hair styled, but there are sutures placed in the hairline which would have to come out in about a week.

Dr. Sheldon Kabaker’s website has a great Frequently Asked Hairline Lowering Questions page that should answer any additional questions.

Hair Loss InformationDiagnosed with a Norwood Class 2/3 Hairline – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

I’m a 38 year old white male recently diagnosed as a Norwood 2/3. The miniturization study indicated that I’m loosing hair in the frontal and temporal hairline only. I’m obsessing about this now and wondering if I should wait a bit or go ahead with a transplant now. Since the Dr. did classify me on the Norwood scale- I guess I’m really balding and it’s not simply a mature hairline. I am taking 1/2 dose of Propecia daily, but doubt it has really helped me after almost 2 years. However, I’m too scared to stop taking it. Based upon your experience and expertise, can you provide me your thoughts. Thanks so much.

Block Quote

Norwood Class 3With known miniaturization of your hair, taking the correct 1mg daily dose of Propecia is recommended. Taking less is less effective. If you are a Norwood Class 3 (see diagram at right) and wish to reverse it, then a hair transplant may be indicated. Many Norwood Class 2 pattern patients may not require a transplant. If it bothers you, you can do it. If you like and trust your doctor, get his/her opinion.

16 Year Old Is Losing His Juvenile Hairline and He Wants it Back! – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

I’m only 16 but i’ve noticed the corners of my hairline are goin back, and now i can’t do all the cool styles i used to or if i try to it looks wierd, i see people like George Clooney and Ronald Reagan who have low straight hairlines and they look so much better, when i had low hair line corners i used to look soooo much better, please let me know what i can do to get back that low, straight hairline and look that good again, i’d REALLY appreciate it, thank you for your time sir.

I do not know if Propecia (finasteride 1mg) will work in preventing your maturing hairline, because this treatment has not been directly documented — but that is the only thing that may work. The reason I say this is because the maturing process for hair (including balding in those genetically prone) uses DHT as the triggering agent within the body.

Ronald Reagan’s hairline was probably the same one he had when he was 5-10 years old. It occurs in about 4% of Caucasian men (higher in other ethnicities). Age is something that we all learn to face. We can modify it by drugs like Propecia with regard to hairlines, or staying healthy and working out for physical fitness… and of course, a good diet is very helpful. I have no doubt that sooner or later we will better link our diets to the changes in our body and learn to eat better.

Can My Hairline Start Maturing in My 30s? Or Am I Losing My Hair Suddenly? – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

I am 36 yrs old and have been worried about losing my hair since I was 16. My hair is very thick, but I have an uneven hair line. My hair line is v shaped and has remained unchanged for 20yrs. Now I notice a slight change on one side. I never knew about a maturing hairline. In comparison to the photos shown in this site, my hairline seems ok. I don’t have any photos to send yet. Does what I’m describing sound like the mature male hairline?

At 36 years old, it is unusual to have a maturing hairline begin, but that is a loose rule and it is possible that you are either balding or getting to your mature hairline. If you are concerned about hair loss you should see a qualified doctor for a full medical evaluation including a mapping of your frontal hairline for miniaturization.

Management of Progressive Balding – Balding Blog

Dear Dr Rassman,

Your blog entry of 17 July 2007 includes before and after pictures of a man with a receding hairline who has been transplanted on. I am curious what his Norwood classification was before he had the corrective transplants. Is balding in this particular pattern common? Am I right in assuming that most men with this kind of hair loss will need more transplants later on as the balding progresses?

His before photo is on the left; after photo on the right. Click the photos below to enlarge. For more photos, see Results After a Single Session.

This patient has a Norwood Class 3 balding pattern, and yes, it is quite common. He is over 50 years old, so I would not expect his pattern to advance much at all. If he was 25 years old he could lose hair behind the transplants, which may require another procedure, but taking Propecia (finasteride 1mg) may help to prevent that. I don’t like surprises and nor do my patients, which is why miniaturization mapping and a good Master Plan in the hands of a caring, experienced and focused doctor go together hand in hand.

Hair Loss InformationI’m 18 and Want a Lower Hairline – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

I have a naturally high forehead. I want to lower it somehoe but I am only 18 and no one seems to want to deal with me. WHat can I do??

Block Quote

Generally hair transplants for 18 year old males are approached with caution since they have further balding and a hair transplant may accelerate the balding process. For women, hairline lowering with a hair transplant is well proven with great results, even at the age of 18, because the worry about balding (male pattern balding) is not a factor in females. You should start with a miniaturization study of your scalp to see if you have early signs of balding. After all the risks and benefits of surgery are presented to you, it may be a consideration.

My Hairline Has Matured at Age 17 – Does That Say Anything About My Future Hair Loss? – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Hello,
I have read a few posts previous to my post, inwhich you reassured people that gaining a “mature hairline” at a early age (17 in my case), certainly DOESNT mean that you WILL definitely experience further balding past the “mature hairline”. on this subject i have two short questions:

  1. Is there any medical evidence based on maturing hairlines that states that they are definitely separate from the balding process (past the mature hairline)
  2. Since i reached a mature hairline at 17, does this mean i will have a greater chance to actually have the balding gene, or is this just me thinking the worst?

thanks for the great service you provide

The answer to both questions is no, but a good Master Plan should be made with sound metrics on the mapping of your scalp for miniaturization to cover you in the future if you should develop hair loss.

Hair Loss InformationI’m 20, and My Hairline Has Matured More Than I’d Like – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Hi,

I am a keen reader of your blog. I’m 20 years old (male), there is no balding in either my father/mother, or their father’s/mothers.

However, from early puberty, the corners of my hairline have “matured”, but a little too far for my liking. I understand that your general rule is not to perform surgery on young patients, however… if you are satisfied that there would be no further progression, would you “fill in” a young person’s hairline? .5-.75″ and also possibly lower the actual hairline down a small amount?

I know I’m in the UK and your offices are in the US, but I’ve not yet found what looks like a reliable, trust worthy, honest hair transplant surgery in this country! Approximately how many grafts/hours/sessions etc would the process take? I can e-mail pictures if required.

Thank you.

It is understandable that you do not like your current hairline, but even with no evident balding in your family, you may have genetic male pattern balding. It is difficult to tell how bald you may or may not be at such a young age. At the least, you need a miniaturization study, a good history, and exam — and then develop a good Master Plan for the future management of your hair loss.

There are doctors who are willing to transplant hair in patients who are in their early twenties with only slight balding or recession. However, I am cautiously resistant to the idea of lowering your hairline at this point, because I do not know if you will bald further as you get older. With that said, a hair transplant may accelerate balding and cause you to lose more hair, leaving you in a worse position than you are currently at. I would wait for perhaps at least about 5 more years before considering a hair transplant.
