I’ve been reading about this bald chimpanzee for many years, so I’m glad to read that he’s still alive and popular with zoo visitors.

I found an article from 1997 about the same chimp that said he was regrowing his hair due because of a “secret cream made from goat’s milk and hedgerow plants” … but obviously that isn’t the case. I wish secret creams worked as well as advertised.

Hair Loss InformationNew England Area Doctor Recommendations? – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

New EnglandDr Rassman, I was thinking of going in for an evaluation for a ht. I live in new england and because of my job i would not be able to travel beyond the northeast.

I’ve heard good things regarding Dr. Robert leonard. Do you have any recommendations for him or anyone else in New England.? best regard

Dr. Bernstein is in New York, and although I realize that’s not New England, he is closer to you than I am… plus, I know his work well and I trust his skills. He was a part of New Hair Institute for many years and now has his own practice.

Dr. Leonard also has long standing credentials in the field of hair restoration.

Combover Madness! – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Saw this photo gallery someone put together of hilarious combovers. Thought you might like it too.

ComboverIt is important to understand that these hair styles evolve over years. I don’t think anyone just goes “Well, today is the day I finally cover up this bald head with some long hair from the side!

This look starts when the hair loss is in the earliest stages and the changes brought about by these styles are barely seen. As the process of balding takes its toll and the balding pattern progresses, the combover becomes more evident until it’s an embarrassment for family and friends.

Those who produce these crazy styles never see them, practicing denial on a daily basis. What always amazed me was the wives, children and close friends never seemed to address the ridiculous appearance of the style with those who have them.

In the News – The Placebo Effect Improves Sex Drive in Women – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Snippet from the non-hair-loss-related article:

“Faking it” has long been associated with bad sex for some women, but a new study provides a pleasant twist on that phrase. According to a paper released today in the Journal of Sexual Medicine, the placebo effect may increase sex drive for women suffering from sexual dysfunction.

“It may be that their behavior changed as part of getting treatment, even if the treatment itself was an inert tablet,” said Andrea Bradford, lead study author.

It was a small study: 200 women who had been diagnosed with female sexual arousal disorder – difficulty becoming aroused or maintaining sexual activity – participated in a study to find out whether a popular male erectile dysfunction drug – Cialis – could also treat female sexual dysfunction. The women agreed to engage in sex acts over the course of 12 weeks and keep a diary. Fifty women were chosen at random to receive a placebo rather than the investigational drug.

Ah yes…. the power of suggestion. We’ve written about this phenomena before, usually in relation to Propecia side effects. This, however, is early research into a female libido booster and a third of those women given sugar pills noted a higher sex drive after taking what they believed to be medication.

Hair Follicle Structure? – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Hi Dr.Rassman,
I find this blog full of great info and discussion. My question is concerning hair follicle structure and balding. I notice recently that when some of my hair falls out I have two or even three strands of hair connected together. They seem to be connected together by the root or what looks like a “white bulb”. Does this indicate follicular damage or a sign of permanent balding? Thanks for your time.

Block Quote

A follicular unit consists of one, two, three, or sometimes four hairs, and that is the basic anatomy. It is natural to see two or three hair follicles fall out. When hair falls out during normal hair cycling, the entire follicular unit falls out with a bulb and a new hair starts up high in the dermis which grows down into the deep dermis. This does not mean you are necessarily balding, as this can be normal hair cycling and happens to every human being with hair.

Dr Jino Kim and NHI Korea – Balding Blog

Dear Doctors at BladingBlog.com,

I am in Asia and I would to do find a very good FUE doctor in Asia who is specialized in both hair and eyebrow transplant. I came across your blog and found Dr. Jino Kim, and also I have visted his Korean blog too (though I don’t understand Korean but I have checked out the before and after photos there).

Since Dr. Jino Kim is running his hair clinic also under the name New Hair Institute, I wonder if Dr. Kim was also trained under either/both doctors (Dr. Rassman and Dr. Pak) at the New Hair Institue in the US?

Would you please tell me if Dr. Jino Kim is specialized in FUT or FUE and is he also specialized in eyebrow transplant (other than hair transplant, because in his Korean blog I only see a few photos of eyebrow transplant).

Thanks.

Dr. Jino Kim in South Korea has been trained by us and is endorsed by us. He is part of our New Hair Institute in Korea and Dr. Pak visits his clinic every year to make sure the quality is on par with NHI in the US. With regard to the techniques that office uses, they do perform the FUT (strip) and FUE techniques, plus eyebrow transplants. You can contact Dr. Kim at BaldingBlog Korea for further information.

Direction of Hair Part – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Hi, although my question is not really related to hair loss but you might know what I’m trying to figure out. Why is it that everybody’s hairline naturally goes one way or another. I only part my hair on the left side because that’s how it goes and looks better that way but if I try it on the right side, it just doesn’t look good and makes a weird wave look. But I’ve also noticed that some people can part their hair either way and look the same on each side. Any feedback is appreciated, thanks.

If you look and see which side your hair swirl is on, the part usually follows it. Some people have more than one swirl, so they can move their part from one side to the other. It’s just the way you were born.

Behaviorists are studying the hair swirl (also known as a whorl). A previous post about hair whorls can be seen here for our interest — Researcher Finds Link to Counter-Clockwise Hair Whorl and Sexual Preference?

Snippet from the article:

MicroneedlesIn a move that could spell disaster for the lollipop industry, scientists have reported progress in designing pain-free vaccines that people might be able to use at home. Someday that might mean fewer jabs at the doctor’s office — and fewer crying kids needing a sweet to comfort them.

The Band-Aid-like patches, coated with microscopic needles, generally don’t hurt. Moreover, they may actually work better at delivering vaccines and some medications, according to recent research.

While not hair loss related, I wonder if these could eventually be used at the start of a hair transplant to remove any and all pain from the initial injections. Regardless, even as a new way for delivering vaccines, it’s worth reporting here.

Hair Loss InformationIn the News – Actor Jackie Chan Shills for Poison Hair Loss Shampoo? – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Snippet from the article:

Judging from billboards and television commercials in China, film star Jackie Chan has never met a product he wouldn’t endorse. Travel the country and you’ll see the Hong Kong native’s handsome visage hawking electric bikes, anti-virus software, even frozen dumplings.

But although the Chan name has translated to big bucks at the box office, not every product he touches turns to gold. In fact, when news broke last month that an anti- hair-loss shampoo he promoted allegedly contained carcinogens, Chinese cyberspace and media were buzzing about the “Jackie Chan curse.”

The article isn’t so much about the cancer-risk-increasing hair loss shampoo that actor and martial artist Jackie Chan was putting his stamp of approval on, but more about how he takes just about every paycheck to endorse products that he can get… and he has an unusually high rate of failure.

The shampoo is mentioned again later in the article, though: “Few know whether Chan actually uses the shampoo, called BaWang, which its manufacturer claims keeps hair roots strong and black. BaWang Group stock has tanked since the scandal broke, even though government regulators deemed the product safe.

Hair Loss InformationIn the News – Stem Cell Baldness Cure? Not Quite. – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Snippet from the article:

Researchers working at the forefront of stem cell technology may also unexpectedly have come up with a cure for baldness.

They almost miraculously changed one cell type into a completely different one, but in the process ended up with skin cells complete with working hair follicles.

A treatment for baldness was not the goal when they started tinkering with cells from the thymus, a small but critical organ that helps run the body’s immune system to fight disease.

Rather, they wanted to see how stem cells from the thymus would perform if transplanted into growing skin as a way to help burns victims.

Lab ratRead the full story at IrishTimes.com — Stem cell researchers may have found baldness cure

The title of the article might make for a good attention-grabbing headline, but it’s pretty misleading. This was an experiment on lab rats… and the hair lasted “as long as a year“. Granted, it is an interesting experiment, but I wouldn’t put too much hope into it.

Lots of research like this happens and ultimately doesn’t go much further. Could this be different and get a further look? Sure, but that remains to be seen. The researchers weren’t trying to grow hair, so I doubt they’re going to divert their attention to a completely new goal.
