In the News – Lawsuit Filed Against Natural Hair Growth Institute – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

Snippet from the article:

When laser therapy, scalp massages and dietary supplements didn’t work, two clients of Deerfield-based Natural Hair Growth Institute held out their hands for a refund.

Now the two former clients, Virgus Jacques and Margaret Farrell, have filed a class action breach-of-contract and consumer fraud lawsuit against the company, saying they’re part of a larger group that used the program, saw no success and, ultimately, didn’t get their thousands of dollars back despite a guarantee.

“NHGI’s routine practice of informing its customers that they will be refunded the total cost of the program if there is no hair growth progress by the program end — when NHGI has no intention of refunding the money — and telling clients that the program is virtually always successful — when the program many times does not work — deceives customers,” the suit states.

I wonder at times if there is justice in this world and the lawyers do level the playing field. Based on the lawsuit, it sounds like this is one of those cases where the refund guarantee wasn’t worth anything and these consumers were out a nice chunk of money ($11,000 for one… nearly $9000 for the other).

My Hair Feels Healthier After Showering with Soft Water – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

Is there a difference between rinsing your hair in soft water opposed to hard water? I have hard water were I live and my parents have soft. When I visit my parents I notice my hair seems healthier and more manageable after taking a shower using soft water.

Yes, there is a difference between hard and soft water. If you should get my book you will read about the changes that happen to the hair when it is wet and washed. Soft water penetrates the hair shaft better and causes it to remold itself, while hard water does not penetrate the hair shaft well. I spent an entire chapter on hair physiology so I really can’t rewrite it here.

In the News – Michael Jackson’s Hair to Become Diamonds – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

Snippet from the article:

A Chicago-area company that converted strands of Ludwig van Beethoven’s hair into diamonds will soon use the same process on the hair of another music icon — Michael Jackson.

A lock of Jackson’s hair that was charred during the infamous filming of a 1984 Pepsi commercial could produce up to 10 half-carat diamonds, said Greg Herro, CEO of LifeGem.

The hair will be heated to about 5,400 degrees, reducing it to carbon so it can be crystallized and turned into diamonds — a patented process that takes six to nine months, Herro said.

I’ve heard of this carbonization process being done to hair before, but I didn’t know someone had kept a lock of Michael Jackson’s burnt hair for 25 years. The hair was purchased from a collector… and this is the 2nd time that collector has had celebrity hair for sale for this diamond-making process. Is this really a hobby? If so, I hope it has reached its peak.

Is Follica the Same as Hair Cloning? – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Hey Dr,

Great blog, keep it up. I’ve read about seemingly cures to hairloss – follica, haircloning etc.

Just to make things clear – Is follica’s approach also known as hair cloning, or is it completely different? I just want to distinguish between the two.

I ask because you say that haircloning will probably not available for another decade, or more. And am wondering if this applies to follica’s research.

Block Quote

The difference relates to the mechanism of action for Follica which is distinctly different from hair cloning. A Follica press release states, “By studying wound healing on a molecular level, Dr. George Cotsarelis and colleagues discovered that the skin has the ability to revert to a more primitive or ’embryonic’ state as stem cells migrate to the affected area, thereby achieving a regenerative capacity not previously appreciated to occur in adults.” It is this capacity that the research for Follica is based on.

Simply put, cloning requires that replica cells are created from an original cell, while the approach from Follica is to simulate the repair process, gaining more control over it to produce hair. The same press release goes on to say, “The researchers were able to control the regenerative response, including the extent of new hair follicle formation, by manipulating genetic pathways during this ’embryonic window’ when new follicles formed.

I Still Have the Same Amount of Hair I Was Born With – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

when I was born I had the usual amount of hair as most newborns, however, it never grew any more. even though I am now 65 years old, my head hair is the same as when I was born (except it is mostly grey now). my two sisters are the same. we have worn wigs most of our lives. we have never heard of anyone like us. our parents, brothers, children and grandchildren all have normal hair. does anyone know what this is???

I am not clear here. Do you have a high hair count (with very fine hair) or a low count? You have certainly made me curious, but you need to elaborate on what your question is. I would imagine that the use of a wig indicates that you do not have enough hair on your head to look full and youthful. It seems like genetics would be the reason for this, but I really don’t have enough information. Have you seen a doctor for an exam about this?

Hair Loss InformationSome Food to Decrease My DHT Levels? – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

My hair density has decreased since I have started this medicine. Even my front hairline started decreasing. I masturbate 2-3 times a week. Is this loss permanent? What should I eat to decrease my DHT level. Suggest me some food not medicine plz. thank you.

Block Quote

Not sure why you would include your masturbatory habits with the hair question. Masturbation does not cause hair loss, regardless of how many times you might’ve heard that myth.

There is no specific diet that decreases DHT levels and high or low DHT levels in the blood stream do not reflect a cause for hair loss. Hair loss is caused by genes that you were born with and the DHT that we are talking about (which is blocked by the drugs like finasteride) are active inside the cells of the hair follicle, not in the blood stream. I would suggest you eat a normal, healthy diet and masturbate all you want.

Hair Loss InformationI’m Your Controlled Masturbation and Hair Loss Study! – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

lol Dr. Rassman, you say that masturbation has no effect on mpb but then how do you explain that when i stop masturbation for 3 days,my hair feels and looks stronger and thicker and the longer i dont masturbat, the better it gets..but when i do masturbate,my hair looks and feels weaker and thinner..you asked for a controlled study,im your controlled study..my father is bald,my brother balded so im geneticaly set for mpb but using certain methods and limiting masturbation to a minimum,i seem to have some control over my genetic mpb..i think someday you will see that we are right

Block Quote

I think you should go back and look up the what a controlled study actually is. I am posting your email because some other men may feel as you do, but there is no evidence for your thesis. Everyone is in control of what they do with their body, like when they choose to use non-approved topicals on their hair or the frequency of masturbation. If you think your hair is better now, congratulations.

Could Acne Medication Prevent Me From Growing Facial Hair? – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

Beardhey doctor, im a 19 year old male with terrible acne, i have had acne since i was about 15 years old. and since then i have been taking all kinds of acne medications like creams etc…(only external not orally) and i can bearly grow facial hair im wondering if that could be the cause of it, is there any possible chance that it could? my dad, grandparents all have full thick beards. is there any ingredients in acne creams that would prevent hair from growing?

Facial hair growth is determined by genetics. Just because your father or grandfathers (you said “grandparents”, but I assume your grandmothers were excluded) had full thick beards does not necessarily mean their genes will be passed on to you. It can skip generations, much like genetic male pattern baldness. I’m not sure what acne medications you used, but I highly doubt that any over-the-counter creams would impede facial hair growth. I even doubt that prescription creams would cause a problem to facial hair.

Wet Hair Weakness – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Is hair really weaker when wet?

Also, I’ve read you shouldn’t brush your hair when wet, but use a comb. But either way, it would seem to stress the hair if there are tangles.

Block Quote

In Chapter 3 of my book, Hair Loss and Replacement for Dummies, it discusses the status of wet hair, combing the hair and tangles. You are correct in that you should not do much with wet hair, as it is fragile. Using a wide-tooth comb is in your best interest. Drying is best naturally, and using a blowdryer can damage the hair. But I will not steal the thunder of Chapter 3, so buy the book or if you visit my office, I will give you a copy just for making the trip.
