Not a Cowlick, But an Actual Cow Licking Your Scalp to Regrow Hair? – Balding Blog

I saw an unusual treatment for balding on Animal Planet. It was a show that featured the top ten weirdest animal treatments (Leeches, Maggots, ect.), and it showed a doctor who has a cow lick people’s heads to regrow hair. I know that sounds like bull (no pun intended), but there were photos that made it look like it worked great, and there were people who swear by it. There was even a woman who talked about how many really stupid things are tried by people who are losing hair. The show mentioned that saliva may have some kind of healing property, or that the men could be regrowing hair due to the placebo effect.

Cow LickThat gives me a great idea for a new business to supplement my existing hair business! I could rent an office in Beverly Hills, put a single cow in it, and charge people by the minute to get their cow licks. Hopefully I’ll be able to find a building that allows me to keep a cow indoors. And I am the perfect guy for this, for as many of you may know, I had a dairy farm in the 1970s and if there is anyone who could know how to tell the difference between a cow and bull, it would be me. One day, my father was visiting from Florida, and he saw all of the cows and asked me how to tell the difference between a boy and girl cow (no joke). My entire family laughed and laughed and it simply went over his head. So for those of you who wish to take advantage of my new cow licking venture, please leave a comment here to give me an idea of how much you’ll be willing to pay.

On a serious note, I didn’t see the special you’re talking about on Animal Planet, but there’s no cow I know of that has magical saliva that makes hair grow.

Update: A reader has provided a link to the Animal Planet clip about the bovine spit growing hair. I think it belongs on a show like Ripley’s Believe It or Not, but you can judge for yourself. Video here.

In the News – Medicine Man Claims He Can Cure AIDS with Herbs – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

Here’s an article from CNN about Baba Chukuri, a “healer” in Nigeria that claims to have cures for nearly everything, including AIDS. Ridiculous, right? Well, there’s money in ridiculousness.

Snippet from the article:

[Dr Uford Inyang from Nigeria’s Institute for Pharmaceutical Research and Development] believes the global herbal market to be worth up to $5 billion. If any of the treatments are found to work, the local healers can receive up to 10 percent of the profits in royalties.

None of Chukuri’s treatments have yet been scientifically proven to work.

Unsurprisingly, this story reminded me of all of the crap products out there people buy every single day to treat their hair loss. Most times the only thing these products “cure” is the emptiness of the wallets of some shyster, and the buyer winds up with even less hair and hope afterward. It’s a shame people fall for this stuff.

A Patient’s Experience Expressed in His Words – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

Here’s a note from patient, posted here with his permission:

I’d like take this opportunity to express my gratitude for all your past help and suggestions. I wonder if potential clients realize how appreciated and important this follow-up care is to the whole experience. All of my expectations have been met or exceeded. Unfortunately, other than family members most people are either unaware of what the positive change is that appears to them or reluctant to ask if detected. Rest assured that if asked I would be delighted to speak of my experience. Please pass my sentiments on to your colleagues especially Dr. Rassman as I was fortunate to have him perform the procedure.

I believe that we practice medicine the way it should be practiced, focusing not only on the technical side of what we do, but focusing on the people side and helping them through the experience. From pain management to patient education, we make the experience the way it should be.

We keep answering questions about post-operative care from patients who have not had responsive hair transplant surgeons, so this post is presented because we practice what we preach.

I’m Eating Soy and Broccoli Every Day to Fight MPB – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

I’m interested in fighting MPB without drugs so I am taking interest in soy and broccoli. I read that both contain goitrogens that affect iodine and the thyroid. I’ve been drinking like a whole carton of soy (8 servings) and a head of broccoli each day (probably a few servings) and I don’t consume dairy. I just bought a kelp supplement for iodine and it says to take one capsule a day which provides 276 percent of DV of iodine. But because I eat so much soy and broccoli each day, should I be taking more i.e. two, three, or four a day? I’m a big guy so maybe that makes a difference. I’ve also eaten chicken livers before and those contain like 1000 percent DV of vitamin A, so several kelp capsules can’t be too bad right?

I don’t think broccoli or soy will grow hair, but I do know that it produces gas. I know I don’t need to say it again, but indulge me — male pattern baldness is from genetics. You really can’t fight the cards you are dealt from a genetic perspective, as there is no cure for balding. Good luck against the fight!

Also remember anything in excess can also be bad for you, so use your judgment.

Hair Loss InformationHas Miniaturization Mapping Been Written About in Peer-Reviewed Publications? – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Dr. Rassman,
First, let me thank you for the valuable resource your blog provides. I understand that it is in men’s nature to become concerned about hair loss as we age. I also understand that you have answered this question, or at least very similar questions many times. I’ll ask anyway, because you seem like a good guy.

I am a 27 year old white man. I have severe depression and OCD. I recently (past couple of months) started obsessing about my hair. I’ve always been overly concerned about the way I look, and I’ve always been severely lacking in self confidence. When I tilt my head back and look up at the front of my hair line in under direct light from a couple inches away, I can see scalp going back about two inches. When I tilt my head forward, I see no scalp and my hair looks the same as it always has. There are a few long hairs growing below my hairline. I dont notice a change in my hairline when compared with photos taken when I was in my early 20’s. If I pull hard on my hair around my hairline, nothing comes out. Same with the crown. My mom’s dad died with a full head of hair in his 90’s. My dad thinned over the course of his life, but didn’t really go “bald” until he was in his early 50’s. He’s now maybe a norwood 3v or 4. His dad had the same pattern, except it didn’t kick in until later in life. My mom’s brother went bald young. My maternal great grandfather had Homer Simpson’s hair by the time he was 30 or so. My dad’s brother still has a good head of hair in his 50’s. What do you think (and I know you can’t really tell without a miniaturization study)… which leads me to my next question.

Is a miniaturization mapping something that is common among dermatologists? Do most of them (in your experience) properly perform and understand the procedure? Is this something that has been written about in peer-reviewed publications? Will a dermatologist that does not specialize in hair loss be able to correctly diagnose what is going on with my hair (if anything)? Thank you very much for your time.

Block Quote

If you know you have OCD and are starting to obsess about your hair, I think you answered your own question about what my thoughts are. You’re seeing possible thinning when your head is tilted and you’re under direct light. The hair will generally appear thinner under harsh lighting.

I wrote about this when I applied for a US patent in 1992. I published it in various articles, not suggesting mapping the head, but showing the connection between balding patterns and miniaturization. The rest is not rocket science. It is not exciting to map out the scalp for miniaturization and actually if the doctor is knowledgeable, then a good sweep of the scalp will give the needed information for a well trained physician.

Many doctors now have video imaging systems in their office, like slightly more expensive versions of the USB video microscope mentioned in the Mapping Your Own Scalp series. For around $100, you can buy this microscope for yourself and get the mapping started. One of the biggest reasons that I created BaldingForum.com was because of comments like yours — that forum gives site visitors the chance to empower themselves by mapping their own hair and making their own diagnosis, following the process over time with aging, drugs, etc. You can share your results with others and get feedback from other site members, not just from me (time is always a problem for me, because I can’t just get to everyone). I believe that the real power will be in the hands of people like you — those who just want to know what is happening to them.

Scientists in the United States have pointed the finger at seven genes that appear to play a role in psoriasis, a study published on Sunday says.

The work could unlock new drug targets and tailored treatments for this painful, disfiguring skin disease, they said.

We are unlocking more and more of our genetic codes. The balding four most probable genes have been identified. Now we have identified one of the main culprits of psoriasis. Once we know the gene and command it, we will develop appropriate drugs for its cure.

Hair Loss InformationIn the News – Masturbation Linked to Prostate Cancer?! – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Snippet from the article:

Men who are very sexually active in their twenties and thirties are more likely to develop prostate cancer, especially if they masturbate frequently, according to a study of more than 800 men.

However the UK research team also found that frequent sexual activity in a man’s forties appears to have little effect and even small levels of activity in a man’s fifties could offer protection from the disease. Most of the differences were attributed to masturbation rather than sexual intercourse.

Hair Loss InformationCan Hair Reverse Miniaturization During a Life Cycle? – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

You often talk of shedding and how in theory if miniaturized hairs are shedding after starting medication like Propecia it might be making way for new thicker hair. Is this the only way that reversing miniaturization can occur or can it happen within the same cycle? A reverse “exclamation point hair” I guess. Thin at the end and thick at the root.

Block Quote

Considering that most people have a hair cycle of 3 years and we see changes in miniaturization with medications in months, the answer is that changes do occur within cycles. I have the means to measure hair shaft thickness and maybe on a patient with an 8 month reversal of miniaturized hairs, I will measure the two ends of a single hair shaft.

How Much Should I Trust My Dermatologist? – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

How much should I trust my dermatologist!?

I am a 24 year old male and over the past year I have noticed some subtle signs of hair loss (my hair began to feel slightly thinner when I ran my hands through it, initially just in the front, but then around the back/crown as well… although i’ve noticed that it still feels thicker around the sides and the nape of my neck). Additionally I noticed some very slight recession on the right side of my front hairline.

All these changes were only noticeable to me, and I have asked many friends and family to examine my hair closely and they all think I am paranoid and have a thick head of hair. However, I finally went to the dermatologist two weeks ago and he looked at my head for about 30 seconds with a magnifying glass and said that he did see some slight thinning at either side of the periphery of the crown (so not in the center of the crown area). Interestingly, this is not where I “felt” my hair thinning. He prescribed propecia, and I have started taking it. However, I asked him several questions about what extent of hair loss I should expect should I choose not to take the drug and all I got from him was that I could expect “further thinning” over the “next 20 years”… he did not mention miniaturization mapping as an option and when I asked about heredity he said that it wouldn’t really tell me all that much to look at other males in my family. Anyway, I was wondering if there was any way I could clarify this further… how much hair loss should I expect given the subtle thinning at my age and my family history??

There is little balding in my family as both of my grandfathers died with full heads of hair… my mom has five brothers, only one of whom has any significant hair loss and he is over 60 and the hair loss occurred later in life; my father’s hair has receded a bit and thinned over time, but he is now in his mid 50s and I would say he is a class II/III with some slight thinning on top and (very slight) around the crown, but still with a good head of hair and no one would consider him bald… in addition, he has a brother is in his 60s and has a full head of hair.

Anyway, I was just wondering if from this information there was any way to make a guess at my future hair loss pattern/rate? I will continue to take the propecia, but is it worth getting a second opinion?

Block Quote

Sadly, not many physicians seem to know of miniaturization studies, as I often write about here. Or if they do know of them, they don’t provide it as a service to their patients. One of the reasons I created a guide to mapping your own scalp is so that you will be empowered to evaluate your own miniaturization. And while a doctor may not call it a “miniaturization study”, if they look at your hair under a microscope it is essentially what they are doing. The key is to have this study done annually (or every 6 months or so) and compare the results so you can see where your hair loss is going or if any treatments are working.

You were obviously concerned enough to seek the advice of your family member and a doctor. If both you and your doctor believe there is some early thinning (miniaturization), Propecia may be a good starting point. I can’t tell you who to trust and not to trust. You need to make that decision on your own and if you still cannot decide (maybe from your paranoia), seek a second opinion from another doctor who may give you a better and more believable opinion.

Hair Loss InformationIn the News – British PhD Working on Top Secret New Hair Loss Cure – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Snippet from the article:

So keep an eye on Thomas Whitfield. The 27-year-old Oxford biochemistry PhD is working on a venture called TRX2 (derived from the Greek word for hair, Trichos. “The two for second – your second generation of hair,” he tells me). It promises to make “hair loss a thing of the past”.

Still in stealth mode as the intellectual property is in the process of being protected, Whitfield plans to have his “product and service” on the market within 12 months. His only guidance is that it is not based on “gene therapy” – an area being explored by several other British start-ups.

It is easy to make claims, but the proof will be in the product and the research that is released. The good news is that European patent filings are published 6 months after receipt of the application so we will all not have to wait 12 months find out what the secret is.
