Another Clinic Named NHI? – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

I know you wouldnt normally do this, but would you please follow the link and see what you think of the Hair transplant clinic. The reason why is i am booked to have a transplant with them in 5 months and i need an urgent analysis on wether it is a reputable clinic and what they are offering is acceptable. Please NHI team, just your opinions. The reason i have come to you is because you arent ‘Sales merchants’ and arent biased. Also you wouldnt just say another transplabt clinic isnt good just so they come to you instead. You the best in the world so you wouldnt have to. Please follow the link and tell me you opions on what there offering.

Thanks Dr. Rassman, Jae P. Pak and NHI team

That clinic in the UK and a few others like it around the world call themselves NHI. There’s one in Australia and even a couple have opened here in California trying to piggyback onto our reputation by using similar names. There are laws and I could probably pursue action, but it is too expensive for me to try to enforce copyright laws around the world, but I have enforced it in the United States.

I don’t know of that doctor in the UK or his work, but I would question the clinic’s honesty and integrity if they claim to be affiliated with my practice (copying our name) and you may think twice about having them work on your head. Even if they don’t claim to be associated with the New Hair Institute, the fact that they try to create confusion about it is suspect. These NHI clinics are not affiliated with myself or the New Hair Institute. Truth is, I have turned down opportunities to spread my practice out to other parts of the world. The New Hair Institute (NHI) has only two offices in California.

In the News – Women with Short Hair Don’t Want Sex? – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

Daily Mail UK has a hard-hitting new bit of journalism (yes, I’m being sarcastic) where they ask hair stylists and relationship experts the question on the minds of most of the world: Does short hair on a woman mean she doesn’t want sex?

From the article:

Is short hair a conscious – or unconscious – signal that a woman is not interested in sex? The question was raised this week by sex therapist and former comedienne Pamela Stephenson, who believes ‘deliberately reducing one’s attractiveness’ can sometimes be a way of repelling men’s interest.

Accuracy of Miniaturization Mapping? – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

How accurate is miniaturization analysis? My trichologist said unless you examine hair bulbs and shafts under microscope, you cannot determine the exact cause of hair loss. She also said that any thinning looks like male pattern baldness. What do you think of her opinion and the microscopic hair analysis?

A miniaturization mapping is just looking at the hair under a microscope and comparing it with normal hair that is often in the general area you are studying! I have never understood what the trichologist is looking at under the microscope. The accuracy of our mapping process is regional, based upon the changes that occur in miniaturization (often progressive) with genetic balding. More importantly we evaluate the pattern of miniaturization (under a microscope) at different areas of the scalp to determine how extensive it is in areas where future balding will occur, which will always miniaturize prior to becoming bald. Early in the process, the naked eye will often be unable to pick up the changes in thinning, so the mapping here has great value. And in case you missed it, I’ve provided tips on performing your own miniaturization mapping:

  1. Mapping Your Own Scalp for Miniaturization, Part 1
  2. Mapping Your Own Scalp for Miniaturization, Part 2
  3. Mapping Your Own Scalp for Miniaturization – VIDEO

To answer more specifically to what your trichologist said, you don’t need to examine the hair bulbs and shafts under a microscope to determine the exact cause of hair loss. The cause of hair loss is genetic balding in probably 99% of men. We use a miniaturization study to find out if there is early balding and then quantify it as well. We also use a miniaturization study to plan for treatment (medical or surgical) and follow the progress of such treatment plan. Drugs like Propecia may reverse miniaturization.

Finally, if you do not have male pattern baldness (women, for example) looking at hair or its bulb under a microscope wouldn’t tell much unless there is a telogen effluvium. Generally after taking a good medical history and examination, doctors do a scalp biopsy in women (as a last resort) to determine if there is a pathological process or order blood tests to see if there is an underlying medical issue.

How Can I Stop My Body Hair Growth? – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

Hello,
I’m a 46 year old male and for the past five or so years, I have felt like I’m turning into a Chia Pet! I have hair growing all over my body and it grows fast. Is there anything that will stop the growth of hair? If I pull it out, it grows back within a week.
Thanks

Chia PetShort of laser treatment to kill the hair area by area, you may be stuck with what nature and your ancestors gave you.

Laser hair removal is a fairly large industry today, and from what I understand, not too comfortable (and could take multiple treatments).

Fibrosis of the Scalp? – Balding Blog

What is fibrosis of the scalp for woman. Is it something that can be cured and how can you prevent this from happening?

Honestly, I do not know what this term is reflecting. I assume it has something to do with the thickening of the scalp tissue, but I need it put into context so that it is a question that I can try to respond to.

Half the Face Grows a Fuller Beard – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

My boyfriend is always concerned that he grows more hair on one side of his face and then the other side is more sparse. It’s like someone drew a line down the center vertically and the left half grows more and thicker hair than the right- he says. I don’t really notice but it always bothers him- is there something he can do to fix this? He is 25 years old and has no other hair issues (like on his head or rest of body). Is there a term for what happens on his face? and how to fix it? Please respond!! I can’t find anything on the internet about it! Thanks!

I would want to examine him and count the density of the hairs on one side and compare it to the other side. He might try minoxidil on one side of his face to see if that evens out the growth. A scientific term for hair growing more sparse on one side of the face doesn’t come to mind, though.

In the News – Cold Cap for Hair Loss From Chemotherapy – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Snippet from the article:

Medical science has made great strides recently in developing successful cancer treatments. But there hasn’t been a lot of progress in dealing with one of the most distressing side effects of cancer therapy – hair loss.

A clinical study is underway on a system that just may help patients keep their hair as they fight for their lives.

Read the full text — Cold Cap Therapy

I read this with interest, but I have no knowledge of it first hand. The article does say that the “cold” in “cold cap therapy” means that they are stored at -22 degrees Fahrenheit, which I’d imagine could be quite uncomfortable. There’s one quote in the text that was a little alarming to me, unless I’m just reading into it too much. The inventor of the therapy, a British scientist, said, “I’ve got husbands calling me saying thank you because their wives who have hair down to here are saying I won’t do chemo, I’d rather die than lose my hair.”

They’d rather die? Hopefully that’s just a figure of speech…

Mapping Your Own Scalp for Miniaturization, Part 1 – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

What’s the Point?

For some years now, I have been advocating the use of video magnification for the purpose of:

  1. Detecting the presence of miniaturization to establish the presence of genetic balding in men.
  2. Examining the extent of the miniaturization as a predictor of just how far the balding pattern might go if left untreated.
  3. Using the estimate of measurements for the degree of miniaturization to establish reversal or progression of the balding process.

The medical community has been less than enthusiastic about accepting this approach for reasons that I never have and still do not understand.

Do It Yourself!

CelestronPeople interested in getting this study have been unable to find cooperative doctors willing to make this service available and many doctors just laugh when they have been approached by blog readers asking to get the study done. Many doctors don’t even understand what it means to analyze the presence and degree of miniaturization. I have realized for some time that performing these determinations is not rocket science, so I have made the decision to enable those interested readers to perform their own miniaturization study. It requires an adequate video imaging system (a computerized version of my original U.S. Patent issued in 1994) which I’ve found available over the internet for under $100. For the informed patient who is interested in getting this analysis and can not find a doctor to do it, they can purchase the handheld unit from one of the sources referenced below and perform the testing themselves. The cost of the video imaging system is often less than the cost of the physician’s visit and it will allow the interested person to repeat the study yearly, accumulate a set of photographs of their balding area and compare the results over time. For those on medications like Propecia, it will enable the user to see if he is getting control of his hair loss over the course of 8-12 months.

Take a good look at the defined Norwood balding pattern classifications and you can clearly see that quantifying miniaturization in the areas of balding will give you a tool to determine just how far your balding might progress.

What Do I Buy?

The hardware required is a Celestron 44300 handheld digital microscope, and what I particularly like about this (aside from the sub-$100 cost) is that you can plug it into your computer’s USB slot to save the images in JPG format. That will make it easy for you to upload the saved images so that physicians can analyze the results. But I don’t want to get ahead of myself just yet (wait until Monday)! This microscope works for both Windows and Mac computers. I’ll be providing a tutorial video next week on our new sister site, BaldingForum.com, that will show you how to use this microscope and how to map your scalp.

Here are some sites that sell the microscope; I have no preference of which site you purchase from:

Is Actor Brendan Fraser Balding? – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

Hi Doc. Got a quick celebrity question. I’ve heard that brendan fraser is loosing his hair. I’ve seen a lot of photos and to me it does look like his hair line is thinning. Here is a link to some recent photos at the premier for the new mummy.

Photos at Brendan Fraser Film Consortium

There does appear to be considerable thinning behind the frontal hairline from these pictures. The change shown here could be do to the use of concealers, or a treatment period on Propecia or minoxidil (it would be a great result from the medications and I have seen this on occasion, although rare). It could even be a hair weave which has the fullness of body, or it could be a series of hair transplants doing this.

I absolutely think that the after picture with good hair shows his handsome facial characteristics which are blunted by the thinning look of the before photo, making him look almost sickly in appearance. The after picture shows the “sex appeal”, while the before picture probably will not be driving the girls crazy.
