Dr Rassman Quoted in Boston Globe – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

Boston GlobeMy initial thought was that a quote by yours truly in the Boston Globe would be a really great thing. Then I realized that the writer of the article only found three words of mine (relating to DHT) to be worth quoting. Check it out:

Am I the “shrivels hair follicles” guy now? Is that going to be my claim to fame? Wow, I hope not! But hey, at least it gave me something funny to mention on the blog.

Hair Loss InformationStress Related Scalp Build-Up and Bleeding Scalp – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

I had supposed stress related scalp problems. it used to bleed and sometimes get really dry. when i put scalp grease on it it would get too greasy and buildup some nasty thing i would peel off. it itched so bad and bled when i scratched it. the dermatologist did cultures and found nothing so i guess its from stress. the problem went away on its own but i have spots on my scalp that wont grow hair. i wonder if the scalp is covering the follicles. can my hair grow back?

Block Quote

A bleeding scalp is not normal. Without an examination, I can not tell what is happening to you. As you already have seen a dermatologist, I suggest you ask him/her what is wrong with you. If your doctor can’t determine the problem, see another doctor. You need to get an opinion from a physician who can examine you in person.

Any Hair Restoration Advancement Predictions? – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

How much advancement do you predict will be taking place in the science of hair restoration within the next 5-6 years? Do you think that a male with a class 6 on the norwood scale would have any chance of getting the majority of his hair back? And i’m not talking about your regular hair transplant where the majority of men still look thin on top, i’m talking about the real deal thickness as on the sides and back of the head

Thanks DOC

The exciting happening from last week was the recent discovery of what may be an important genetic marker for causes of hair loss (see In the News – Hair Loss Gene Identified?). The hairs in a Norwood Class 6 pattern balding person are probably still there in some involuted state, possibly at a cellular level. With the right approach, my great hope is that there is a possibility that this hair in your bald area can be stimulated to grow. I couldn’t pinpoint a timeframe for you, though.

Many people will point and shout about how hair cloning or hair multiplication is the next big thing, and more recently people were doing the same jumping up and down for the hair lasers, and many years back there were various tonics and elixirs that were claiming to magically regrow your hair. When any new methods for regrowing hair or preventing hair loss are proven safe and effective, I’m sure you’ll learn all about them — the mainstream media will be all over it.

Hair Loss InformationJust How Bald is Bruce Willis? – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Bruce Willis and Halle BerryI have a dispute with my friend that Bruce Willis in the movie Perfect Stranger is using “movie hair”.

Is that his real hair or not?

Block Quote

Honestly, your guess is as good as mine.

I don’t have access to the make-up artists and stylists that were on the set during filming of that movie (see photo above), and I haven’t had the opportunity to examine Bruce Willis’ scalp. It appears like he has a Norwood Class 4 pattern of hair loss from the above picture (no crown is showing), but I can’t tell for sure since he usually shaves his head completely in most of the pictures and movies I have seen him in. I would guess that the frontal hair shown in the above photo may be real. My reason for such thinking is this — why would Hollywood put hair on Willis’ head with a frontal balding pattern, when they could just as easily put it back to a pattern reflecting a period earlier in his life? I haven’t seen the movie, so I couldn’t really tell you if it was a purposeful choice.

Hair Loss InformationHow Do You Measure Scalp Laxity? – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Hello dr Rassman

How exactly do you figure out the laxity of the scalp and the residual donor area capacities if somebody went through strip procedures in the past? Is there a “measurement” possible or is it only by touching and feeling?

Thanks

There are two tools that I use on occasion, one in the office and the other in the operating room. We call it a Laxometer which we invented and just submitted for publication in the Hair Transplant Forum. Experienced surgeons know how to test and quantify scalp laxity at examination and good surgeons develop a ‘feel’ for it. You can see the video on scalp exercises and estimate the up and down movement. One half inch is average, more is better, less is tight.

Hair Loss InformationIn the News – Hair Loss Gene Identified? – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Hey doc, how’s it going? I’ve stumbled across this article on MSNBC.

I don’t want to get my hopes up too high, but the identification of a gene linked to hair loss sounds like an important discovery. What’s your take on it?

Block Quote

I had many people send me that MSNBC article yesterday, and my take on this is the following —

I think it is great that a possible hair loss gene may have been identified, but that does not necessarily solve the problem of genetic balding in the short term. It will help focus the research on the mechanism that have heretofore not been well understood. It is a step in the right direction, for sure. I’m looking forward to seeing where this discovery will take us.

How Do So Many Older Rock Stars Still Have Such Great Hair? – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

I always find it amazing how rock and roll stars in their 50’s and 60’s still have hair like 20 year olds. Could there be something they are doing or is it just the lack of stress of being a rock star has enabled them to keep their youthful look. Just some examples would be Sammy Hagar,Mick Jagger, Robert Plant and Steven Tyler.

Thanks

Rock and rollI can not comment specifically on any of these men, but I am personally aware of a few musicians that use either hair extensions or hair systems to give the appearance of a full head of hair. Long hair seems to be for musicians like hair was to Samson and I have been told over and over again, that without the appearance of hair, they can not perform well. Perhaps it is a confidence issue, perhaps it is something else entirely.

Body Hair or Scalp Hair — Which Grows Faster? – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

which grows faster body hair or scalp hair?

The cycle of hair growth is shorter with body hair than scalp hair.

If what you are actually wondering is whether or not body hair or scalp hair will grow faster after a hair transplant, that would require some experience with body hair for an answer. I frankly do not have the answer for that, other than to say that hair growth after a hair transplant ranges from immediate to about 5 months on average.

Hairmax Claims They Formally Challenged Dr Rassman – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

Hairmax claimed that at the ISHRS they “formally challenged you on the issue and you were unable to justify the accuracy of your hair counts you presented and you therefore had to retract your comments.” Is this true?

I remember that we had some verbal interchange, but I never retracted any of my comments.
