Follica to End Baldness? – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

Are you familiar with Follica and their technology to generate completely new hair follicles on the scalp? This company seems to be headed by a who’s who in the field of hair loss….Dr. Vera Price, Dr. Rox Anderson, and Dr. Cotsarelis from Penn State University where this technology was first discovered. I see where they recently acquired 5.5M US from investors to conduct a clinical proof of concept study on 50 or so volunteers. Since everything they use to accomplish this is already FDA approved and/or already being done (microderm abrasion + application of special proteins), it seems like this could really be the “holy grail” to end baldness much sooner than expected (at least sooner than NEOSH101 or Intercytex).

Have you been following this exciting development at all or do you have any thoughts on this technology?

FollicaThe work sounds exciting and I look forward to reading more about their research in medical journals. I have not been following it though, because the information on it is cursory and does not give me the insights I need. You are right, the people associated with it indicate a general excitement that has been generated. There is a quick write up on Follica here.

For those wanting to read the news about their recent $5.5 million round of funding, you can check it out here.

How Can Hollywood Actors All Have Such Great Hair?! – Balding Blog

It seems very unlikely that 90% of the actors in hollywood would have full heads of hair. For some it seems that their hairlines are still similiar to teenagers and the others have a thickness to their hair that is almost unreal. I just can’t believe that so many of these celebrities could be so lucky. My question is what percentage of these celebrities would you estimate have ever used propecia, and/or have had a hair transplant?

Jason StathamI don’t know how frequent balding is in Hollywood actors. We know that people with hair generally get jobs easier and that may apply to actors, as well. Also, not everything you see is what it really is. That’s the magic of Hollywood. Actors have images that they have to maintain, and when they start balding many actors will use a topical camouflage such as Toppik or even a hair system (like the type John Travolta has been seen with) to keep the particular look they are known for.

On the flip side, there are what seems to be a growing number of major actors letting their natural balding looks prevail; action stars such as Bruce Willis and Jason Statham (see photo), for example. Of course, the list goes on and on.

Hair Loss InformationWhy Is Dr Bernstein Bald? – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Why is Dr. Bernstein bald? He is practically a Norwood Class 6/7. Does he suffer from DUPA or is he just adamant about not getting transplanted?

Block Quote

Some say bald is beautiful! Dr. Bernstein is comfortable with his looks and understands the burden of balding. When he was younger, had the transplant solution been as good as it is today, he might have gone for it. Hair transplantation is a personal decision and not for everyone.

Number of Hair Transplant Procedures Done in the US Annually? – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

How many hair transplants is done every year in the U.S? How many of these are fue operations?

MoneyFor the numbers of hair transplants done in the United States, the answers vary depending upon the source. I have read that the estimates are now around 100,000+ procedures annually. The dollar value for surgery runs somewhere between $500 million and $1 billion annually. You can find some stats at this article from the NY Sun — The $1.2B Growth of Scalp Restoration Surgery.

More complete statistics can be found at the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery 2007 Census Report (PDF file).

There are no figures on Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) procedures that I know of. I suspect that the numbers are very low (less than 1,000 patients per year), as most doctors do not want to do this type of procedure due to the required skills and patience that are not most of the doctors’ forte.

Vacuum Pump Regrows Hair – from Popular Science Magazine in 1936 – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Hair Growth Vacuum - 1936

From the November 1936 issue of Popular Science Magazine comes this gem, thanks to the great Modern Mechanix site. It should go without saying, but the article is over 70 years old now, and if the technology was successful as it claimed, it would probably be the recommended treatment today. My favorite part of this has got to be the caption under the full image, which says “A patient receiving the vacuum treatment for baldness while he reads and smokes in comfort“.

Here’s an excerpt from the article:

USE VACUUM TO AID HAIR GROWTH

CAN SCIENCE restore hair to the bald? Startling results in the affirmative are reported in 500 cases treated with a new machine, developed by Dr. Andre A. Cueto, of Cincinnati, Ohio. Fourteen to twenty half-hour treatments are said in many cases, to produce the appearance of “fuzz,” and from this point on the patient is declared to progress toward a normal growth of hair.

Thanks for pointing me to the video! While I’m not the biggest fan of rap music and this video is probably not for everyone, I can say that this was quite funny. Since the visitor demographics for this site are all over the place, I’d say this is definitely worth posting here. The video is for the song “Bald Spot” by Seattle, WA rapper Type.

After My Hair Was Chemically Straightened, It Smells Burned – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

I has my hair straightened for a few days, and when I washed it, it smelled burned almost. I’ve washed it three times and the smell won’t go away. What’s wrong with it and how do I stop it.

You may just be smelling the chemical residue. It should wash off eventually.

Can the LaserComb Cause a Mole to Become Malignant? – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

Dear Dr. Rassman,

I have two questions about the use of low-level laser light therapy (laser combs). I have forwarded these questions to the makers of the Hairmax and they could not answer them or even venture a guess. I was disappointed because they advertise this big team of highly touted medical advisors, but their customer service department would not even check with one of these so-called advisors for an educated guess. So, what good are they?

Anyway, here are my questions. If a clear, ready answer is not available, can you please use your medical and scientific education, training and experience to venture an educated guess? Please.

1.) If a person has a mole on their head, could the use of a laser comb somehow “activate” the mole and cause it to become malignant? Should this be a concern and is it even a remote possibility?

My next question is in regards to the use of a laser comb along with the use of photo-sensitive medications.

2.) As you know many medicines, and even some herbs, such as St. Johns Wort, have photo-sensitive properties. This means that if someone is taking a medicine or an herb such as St. Johns Wort, they should limit their sun exposure time and avoid tanning beds. If a person is taking something with photo-sensitive properties, what will the effect be using a laser comb? Is there a contraindication? Can the use of a laser comb, in this case, be harmful or contraindicated?

On the other hand, it has crossed my mind that it might actually enhance the benefits of the low-level laser therapy due to the synergistic effect of the medication potentiating the effect of the laser light.

Bottom line: Will the effect of using low-level laser therapy, along with a photo-sensitive agent be detrimental (adverse effects/use with caution?), beneficial (it will synergistically increase the benefits of the product?) or neutral (no effect either way/it doesn’t matter?)

Your email raises good questions that haven’t been asked here before, but I wish I had answers for you. Any answers to your questions would not have the proper data that can be depended upon. I would suspect that the amount of time exposed to the LLLT is not sufficient for the problems you are asking about, but that is just an assumption.

Two Cases of Significant Sperm Count Reduction While on Propecia – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

See Propecia-induced spermatogenic failure: A report of two cases. by Liu KE, Binsaleh S, Lo KC, Jarvi K.

The conclusion of the article states:
Two cases of infertile patients with azoospermia or severe oligospermia who showed significant improvements in sperm concentrations 6 months after the discontinuation of finasteride. In one case, improvement in semen parameters prevented the need for testicular biopsy and corrected the azoospermia. Stopping finasteride in the infertility population may improve semen parameters, and may allow for less invasive fertility treatments.

We have already heard about similar, more frequent side effects with Avodart (dutasteride). While I am not completely surprised, I suspect the frequency is very low. I’ve written about sperm count and Propecia in the past:

Red, Dry Patch on Scalp – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

I have a really dry patch on skin on my head and now it is really red. It is about the size of a penny. What could this be????

Block Quote

It could be one of a dozen potential things, such as ringworm, psoriasis, dermatitis, infection, etc….

I hope you get the picture. Without at least a photo, I couldn’t begin to even guess. The internet is fun, educational and a great communicating tool, but it is not a place to get your medical care. You should see a dermatologist for your skin issue.
