Hair Loss InformationHair Transplant on Nip/Tuck (with Video) – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Doctors, did you see tonight’s episode of Nip/Tuck where they performed a hair transplant? How accurate was the scene, and the resulting effects? I’m sure they took a lot of creative license, I’m just curious, as I am sure others who saw the scene are now.

Nip/TuckNip/Tuck, an outrageous plastic surgery drama TV series on the FX Network, has two episodes featuring hair transplants — the first of which has just aired this week. We actually advised on the program and they elected to use the hair transplant Carousel (automated rapid fire hair implanter), which I invented in the 1990s. I just saw the first of the two shows with the Carousel. One of the two lead plastic surgeons got a hair transplant by his surgical partner and then resumed a full ‘work and play’ load. Doing too much steam and sauna, the plastic surgeon that received the transplant got folliculitis within a day of the surgery. I laughed like hell as I watched the spoof unfold. The focus of this first show of the season was how to build a successful cosmetic surgery practice. I think the message was right on.

With the permission of the show’s producer, I was allowed to post this video clip from the episode featuring the Carousel in it. I take no responsibility for the appearance of these transplants

What a Week — Hair Loss Abuse in the Media! – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

It seems like balding men are being abused in the media this week. From articles about balding U.S. Presidential candidates to newspaper cartoons to TV shows (comedy and drama), this has been quite a week for the 50% of the male population that is losing hair.

The other day, I opened the newspaper and flipped to the Comics section for some relief from the craziness of the world and found a clever Beetle Bailey strip –

Beetle Bailey

Then I watched Larry David’s hilarious show on HBO, Curb Your Enthusiasm, which had a bunch of hair loss related jokes (thanks to Youtube, I found them online). WARNING — this clip includes profanity –

Plus, the Orange County Register reports on a perfect example of BUYER BEWARE — a southern California man flew across the country for a “revolutionary” hair treatment that wasn’t revolutionary at all, and it ended up costing him $82,000 — Tangled tale of Costa Mesa man’s $82,000 toupee.

And then there was the season premiere of the plastic surgery drama Nip/Tuck on FX Networks and their feature on hair transplantation… which I was a part of and which I will be talking about tomorrow. Stay tuned!

Hypothetical Propecia Scenarios – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

Hypothetical situation:

Man #1: A man with MPB and Norwood 4 hair is taking Propecia for a year and experiences significant hair regrowth (let’s says 90% of the hair he originally lost).

Man #2: A man with MPB and Norwood 4 hair is taking Propecia for a year and experiences only a halting of the hairloss and NO regrowth of the hair he lost.

Based on these two situations, which man would have a better chance at preventing further hairloss in the next 2-3 years? One halted the hairloss and regrew hair, the other man only halted it.

Thanks.

Is this a trick question?

I would say Man #1 since he grew back 90% of the hair. Even if he lost more hair in the next 2 to 3 years he would still be ahead of Man #2, but I don’t think that is what you are asking. In reality there is no way to predict hair loss. It is mostly in the genes. Some people may have drastic hair loss at a certain age just because they were meant to as it was written in their genetic makeup.

To put it another way, you cannot predict when Man #1 or Man #2 will die just because they lived healthy lives.

Hair Loss InformationAmericans Haven’t Voted a Bald President Into Office in 51 Years – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

In the November 5th issue of TIME Magazine there is an interesting article titled ‘The Bald Truth‘, which talks despairingly about the absence of a full head of hair for a presidential candidate. Not since Dwight Eisenhower in the 1950s and Martin Van Buren in 1836 has any bald man been elected to be president of the United States.

From the article — “The country’s most prolifically failed presidential candidate, Harold Stassen, ran nine times, and in many of those elections he wore a toupee so alarming that the Washington Post thought it resembled a ‘sullen possum that had been dipped in bronze.’

The essay by Steve Rushin is well written and shows society’s strong prejudice against bald men for political office. Many other such articles back up this position on the need for hair and it is pointed out that “the last time Giuliani was elected to anything (re-elected as mayor of New York City in 1997), he had a scalp full of hair“.

Some years ago when I was doing my radio show, The Inner Man, we had a caller who was vice president of sales for a rather large company. He said that although he was bald, he would never hire a bald man for a senior position. What does that say?

Hair Loss InformationRegrowing Eyelash Hair with FabuLash Mascara? – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

As you know, cosmeceuticals cannot be patented so you may want to reverse engineer FabuLash.

I was told about it by an esthetician who had marvelous eyelashes (no, I don’t believe what I’m told) so, rather than pay $150 for a tube of it (it’s applied as is mascara) I went on to eBay and bought some and began to test it almost a month ago.

Whereas one usually would easily see my eyeliner, for both my lashes and eyebrows are terribly thinned, I now have to dampen and then brush my eyelashes BEFORE putting on mascara to both untangle and to keep them from tangling while applying mascara and can also feel the tips of them on my brow bones. Yesterday I noticed that I’m going to have to do some judicious plucking on my middle eyebrow area.

I have NO idea how this works… or why. It’s NOT just a thickening of the hair or a darkening of it for there is no color change of the hair … there are hairs on both my eyelids and eyebrows that haven’t BEEN there in years (and I never DID have lashes like this, even when I was modeling) so I haven’t a clue. I have eyelashes into both the corners of my eyes and way out on the ends of the eyelid. The stuff does NOT sting my eyes either.

I started putting it on my hairline as well to see what may show up there but that was just 3 days ago and I’d have no noticeable results in so short a time.

Thought you might find this of use.

FabuLash
This email actually came in from an acquaintance of mine. Take what she said here as an honest report of one woman’s experience.

I’m often asked about regrowing eyelash hair, and while I can’t give a medical reason for this phenomenon, I nonetheless wanted to share it with the readers of this site. I do have great doubts that what she reported reflects reality, so take this for what you will. Cosmeceuticals are cosmetic products which claim to have drug-like benefits (anti-aging creams, for example), and Revlon FabuLash would fit that loose definition if it did indeed regrow eyelashes.

There is a tendency for us to talk ourselves into believing that the impossible is possible. If anyone else tries this, please let me know the results.

Sun Spot on Scalp – Can I Lighten the Area? – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Thanks for your informative blog.

I recently decided to shave my head bald and I noticed an unsightly age/sun spot on my scalp. Do you recommend using a product with hydroquinone to lighten the area? Alternatively, are they any other products you’d recommend?

Thanks in advance for your help!

Skin abnormalities should be evaluated by a dermatologist because there are many skin cancers that cause ‘spots’. If you are thinking that this is the aging discoloration of the skin that shows up usually on the exposed parts of the body (hands and arms), I can not tell what to do about it. I know enough to tell you to get a professional opinion before using products like this, and then get advice from that doctor on what to do.

I Want to Buy FUE Tools So I Can Do It Myself! – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Where can I (as a private man) order tools for FUE. I´ll do it by myself.

give me a adress, please.

Thank you

This is a most strange request. The tools for Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) are varied. Some of them are not for sale. There are advertisements for some of the instruments in the Hair Transplant Forum International (the official medical publication of the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery — ISHRS). You can contact the ISHRS for subscription or advertiser information.

I certainly don’t recommend doing surgery on yourself or others, though.

Constant Scalp Itching in the Crown – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

Hi Dr. Rassman,
I’ve scoured the sight and have not been able to find any relevant information to my question, thus i’m presnting it here. I’m a 24 year old male with early stages of MPB ( i wouldn’t even begin to try to give it a norwood classification) Though i plan on visiting you shortly, i was wondering if you’ve ever heard of anything like this: My scalp is constantly itching as if i have severe dandruff, but i have little to no dandruff at all. What makes this phenomenon all the more pecuiliar is that the itching is basically localized in the apex or crown of my head, primarily in the region that i’m experieincing the loss. Does this sound like anything unusual? Should i contact a dermatologist to receive more detailed information?

Thanx

When you visit your dermatologist, he/she can look at your scalp and determine if there is anything there. Some people say they get an itching sensation when they are losing hair, but there is no connection that I can make that link the two. Sorry!

Man Trying for World’s Longest Leg Hair – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

Tyler, Texas- Wes Pemberton thinks he may have a world record. He’s submitted a hair on his leg as the world’s longest leg hair. A hair on his calf measures about five inches. The world record is 4.88 inches.

Full article here — Man goes for world record leg hair

One can infer this is why body hair transplantation to the scalp is so difficult. Body hair does not grow like scalp hair and the length is limited. Some doctors claim that when body hair is transplanted to the scalp, there are scalp influences that give it more length, but not more thickness of the shaft.

Good luck to this guy though. The world has been searching for a new world’s longest leg hair. I hope the search is finally over. I’m being sarcastic, by the way.

Strange Regrowth After Shaving Body Hair – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

Hi!

I just read a question by someone who shaved his pubic hair, and claimed the hair regrew with multiple hairs from the same follicle. I have experienced a similar thing myself, and wondered about it for a while.

I shaved my stomach and chest a while ago, and in a lot of places there are two, sometimes even three, hairs growing from almost the exact same spot. It looks like extra thick hair, but if I examine closely, I see that it is more than one hair.

Have you never heard about this? I don’t feel any need to go to a doctor to have it examined like you suggested, it doesn’t seem to do any harm at all, but I’m still a little curious about it.

Is it possible that you are looking at your shaved body hair before it becomes long enough to appear normal? I doubt that the hair count of each follicular unit will change with shaving, and aside from the two posts I’ve now made about this phenomenon, I don’t recall ever hearing about this before. I don’t know if it is the type of thing really worth focusing attention on, but I can understand your curiosity. Unfortunately, I just don’t have an answer for you.
