Hair-Growing Hat from 1924 – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

Popular Mechanics Ad from June 1924: Hair Growing Hat

Perhaps we should revive this hair growing hat? It seems to fit in with other products out there that people are buying. It should be made to look more modern, though…

HA! Ridiculous!

Woods Technique, Follow-Up? – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

Dear Dr. Rassman,

I read your comments regarding the “Woods Technique” (posted September 16, 2005). I am on the verge of scheduling a transplant with Dr. Woods, and I was troubled by what you said. You say that doctors in Australia have told you of “significant failures” in the hands of Dr. Woods. Could you elaborate on the nature and extent of these failures? Who are the doctors? – I would like to talk to them.

You also said that you have seen some of Dr. Woods’ patients, and that he creates larger recipient site wounds than you. Are these wounds something I should be concerned about – or do they heal? I’m 37 years old and live in Australia, which makes Dr Woods the easiest choice for me – but I am NOT willing to compromise. If his approach is flawed, I will travel to the US.

I have seen many impressive images of Dr. Woods’ work on the Internet. The only criticism I have found is on your website. I do, however, take your views very seriously. If Dr Woods’ failures are not appearing on the Internet, perhaps because of patient embarrassment, I want to know about it before I make a terrible decision. I agree that Dr Woods’ secrecy is not in the best interest of the public – and that it is inconsistent with the advancement of medical science. Please help me make the right decision on this most serious issue.

Regards

The original post you’re referring to is here.

It is best to visit local doctors who are known in this field and ask them directly. This site is for general information only. Ask Dr. Woods to meet a few of his patients and then look at the donor scars yourself. I have always had patients willing to meet people like you to help build their confidence in what I do. In my practice, I am open to such inspections. Secrecy surrounding Dr. Woods and his technique/results makes an analysis difficult.

Baldness Calculator? – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Hello!

I am 19 years old (going to be 20 in september).

I have a noticable receding hairline and I have now for 6-8 months or so. I am terrified of going bald!

I used a baldness calculator and it said I would be bald by my late 20’s. How reliable are these calculators?

Block Quote

I don’t know of any publically available, reliable baldness calculator yet. The best way to determine what your final pattern of hair loss will be is to have your hair mapped out for miniaturization and see what areas are being impacted. In a young man, maybe only the frontal area is starting to bald and as you get older, the balding may progress more towards the back. Miniaturization studies will show that progression and if you start treating it with Propecia, you might find out that the problem will arrest or possibly reverse for a while. See a competent doctor and get your hair mapped as I’ve suggested.

As an aside, we have developed and submitted U.S. Patent applications for a type of baldness calculator. We are working on building it now, but it will take some time to get the right design and we will not manufacture it until we are satisfied with the iterations we work out.

Hair Loss InformationI Have Medical Problems, But Don’t Tell Me to See a Doctor – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Dear Sir,

I am 25. I have very very big problems and it disturbs me, and i cannot concentrate on any thing.

1. I have facial hair on my arms, shoulder, back, chest which can be clearly seen on the day, and thick hair on legs, thighs, bottoms. I will be very glad to get rid of those hairs, PERMANENTLY. The blades, razor, threatning, laser, ointments, will never work, after few weeks, hair grow more and more thickly. So what is the (latest modern equipment or ancient thing or whatever the best one) to take out all the hair from body ? (my father, brother, uncle, all the roots of my family (males ones) don’t have hair, only few have hair on chest and legs only. But why me? Because of it, i cannot wear shorts, vest or go out outside on daylight, or swim or do anything i want. i am good-looking guy, and if someone who knows my secret privacy problem , will be known by everyone, then , i would have to think about ‘suicide’.

2. I have my lower back pain a lot (been 2 years) and my hip bones (feel like my spinal cord), and knees and feel like i might lose my legs (because when my back and hip bones hear, i feel it connected to my brain). what should I really do? (please, don’t just tell me go to doctor) (give me details/pictures of excercises/healthy food to lower the back pain)

please help me about this. One thing is that I cannot go to doctor as I don’t have money, and more importantly, I cannot tell my family or anyone, because when they find out, it would get worse, more pain.

hope to get your reply soon. thank u

This site is intended to educate the public on hair loss topics. Information provided on BaldingBlog.com should not be used for the purpose of medical diagnosis or treatment.

While I empathize with your medical problems and your financial situation, this is not a place to get medical advice. You want me to help you, but I cannot be your doctor. This is the Internet. I cannot examine you and despite what you describe I cannot interview you to know what is really going on.

You write to me asking not to tell you “just to go see a doctor”… but you need to! If you cannot afford one, there are social aid programs that can help you.

If you have unwanted body hair, laser hair removal is an expensive solution, but it works. You might see if it is available in your country.

Hair Loss InformationScalp Exercises to Regrow Hair? – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Dr.,

I came across this web site: http://www.hairloss-reversible.com/my_approach.htm

I’m curious as to your opinion on the possibility that these “scalp exercises” might possibly regrow hair in some individuals after 8 or so months of doing the exercises as a result of increased blood flow to the scalp. It seems like a bunch of unscientific, hocus pocus to me, but if you read the other info on his site, it appears to be very accurate and makes the author
sound very credible.

Thanks.

I visited the above referenced link. It is based on the authors’ personal assumptions on the mechanism of hair loss. He tries to come up with a novel method for treating baldness based on his observation of his bald family members. Although it is interesting to follow his thought process, it is not scientific. Today’s medicine has changed drastically in comparison to 200 years ago. Back then, doctors had their own individual methods of treating different diseases, which at times where completely different and even conflicting with the others.

We use evidence-based medicine to support most of our treatment plans. Although lack of blood and oxygen of the scalp was once thought to be the main cause of baldness, today we know that the scalp oxygen level and blood supply is the same in balding and non-balding people. Massage therapy to increase the blood circulation can not stop the balding process.

Hair Loss InformationAre You Still Actively Researching? – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Dr. Rassman,

Do you still actively conduct research, or do you feel like you’ve given all you have to offer to the hair loss world in terms of innovations such as the FUE procedure or other novel ways of approaching loss?

Block Quote

I strongly believe that the research is an inseparable part of the practice of medicine. Every physician should constantly seek better ways to do things. Hair restoration surgery has been progressing rapidly within the last few years, but there are still many questions to be answered. As a matter of fact, every new finding opens our horizon to many other questions and possibilities.

Here at New Hair Institute, we are actively pursuing several research projects. They are either to increase our general knowledge of hair loss or to improve our techniques and skills. We are also collaborating with nationally known research centers in some sophisticated researches on hair loss and potential treatment modalities for baldness. We will publish our results when they become available and may also release some of the findings on this site.

What Causes an Oily Scalp? – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

Speak with your hair stylist about what to use with your type of oily hair. Some folks just have a lot of oil on their hair and I do not know the cause.

If Intercytex Is Successful, Would Propecia Still Be Needed? – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Hi again, Dr. Rassman. Thanks for the continuous great work on the website. Doctor, my question involves Intercytex and Propecia: assuming Intercytex’ research does generate a successful treatment, am I write to believe patients who get that specific treatment will still need drugs such as Propecia? The reason I ask this is that I believe that even though the “new hair” will not suffer from DHT-related problems, the patient will still lose “original” follicles not related to Intercytex’ procedure. Thanks!

Block Quote

Good question. We really don’t have much information about the quality of the hair that could be produced with this technique. I agree with you that even if you can have an unlimited source of hair grafts for transplanting into the bald area, you still need to keep your natural hair, otherwise you are committed to many unnecessary procedures instead of one. Propecia will most likely hold on to the existing hair and slow down the progression of the hair loss and whatever hair that will be obtained from Intercytex will be focused upon putting new hair into a bald area from (I suspect) a productive ‘hair generating’ source other than excision of strip harvesting from the back of the head.

14 Year Old With White Hairs – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

hi. i am 14 year old (male) and i am having a lot of white hairs. My cousin had experience this when she was in teen age but later her hairs turn black again when she grown up. Is it possibility that my hairs will turn black when i grown up?

Block Quote

I have not heard of black hairs turning white and then back to black. White hair in very young people does occur, although it is not common.
