Vitamin A – How Much is Too Much? – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

Dr, how much is too much vitamin a. I take supplements and a few of them have large amounts of vitamin a like 5000 iu of vit. a.

For most people, up to 25,000 IU (7,500 mcg) of vitamin A per day is considered by some authorities to be safe, but the Food and Drug Administration has established a daily recommended allowance (RDA) of 5,000 IU for vitamin A. Toxicity in the fetus of pregnant women may occur in doses above 10,000 IU. A complete analysis of vitamin A is presented in Solgar Healthnotes.

The dose should be adjusted for pregnant women and children and a doctor should be involved in that. If vitamin A is being used for treatment of vitamin A deficiency, higher doses are required and it should be done under a doctor’s supervision. Complications (overdose) include liver damage, hair loss, blurred vision, and headaches. Sound like you are in the normal dose range.

Can I Do Anything to Promote Facial Hair Growth? – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

Dr. Rassman,
I am 19 years old and still cannot grow a beard. I grow a little hair on my chin and a little on my upper lip. I cannot have side burns or a beard, both of which i would love to have. Is there anything at all that i can do to promote facial hair growth? Vitamins, certain foods?

I had a weak beard when I was 19 and freaked out on it. My father had a full, fast growing beard that I envied. Now I am like my father was and wished I had my 19 year old beard. It seems that we never really get what we want and if we do finally get what we want, we may no longer want it. Show patience and it will probably grow out as you get older.

Do Animals Go Bald? – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

Dr. Rassman,

Do any animals go bald? If not, why don’t they?

Thanks.

Yes, there are animals that do go bald. I know of some mice with alopecia that is similar to some human family lines (alopecia totalis). Also some mice lose their hair as they get older and some have complex polygenic diseases that produce hair loss such as alopecia areata. There has been much written about mice, because they have been the human experimental models, but I am certain that similar problems must exist in other mammals. Guinea pigs are known to lose hair when they are pregnant (like some human females).

Arm Hair Grew in Very Thick After Removing Cast – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

Hey Doc,

I broke my arm 2 years ago and had a cast for 4 months. After removing the cast, I noticed that the hair on my arms were REALLY thick and sprouted all over the place. It was kind of scary, but after about 2 months all the hair returned to normal.

Can you explain what caused this? I have always been curious.

Many people that are required to wear a cast see what you’ve reported. This occurs because the arm hair which sheds frequently as the short hair cycle pushes out old hair (a half to one inch in length) is protected in the cast so that it does not fall out day be day. Most people with normal bathing and showers will get these old hairs to fall out by a simple scrub.

Persistent Forelock of Actor Jude Law – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

I am a 27 year old man with straight jet black hair. I’ve been thinning since I was 21. I still have alot hair left but a really bad receding hairline and a sharp widow’s peak similar to Jude Law in this pic.

What kind of procedure would you recommend for some one like me or Jude Law?

Block Quote

The photo you linked to (and others I’ve seen online) suggests that Jude Law has a Norwood Class 3 balding problem and he seems to have a strong persistent forelock which will probably last as the corners progressively go back. Some people are fine with this pattern, but if he were my patient, I would suggest that he go on Propecia and stay on it for life. Otherwise, he may suffer the fate of actor Bill Murray or late-night talk host David Letterman, both of which had strong forelocks at one point, though Letterman seems to still maintain his.

As for what I’d suggest for you, I’d have to see your actual hair loss before making a recommendation. You can send photos (please reference this blog posting) and I’ll be able to provide further information.

Hair Loss InformationHow Can I Convince My Transplant Doctor to Refund My Money?, Part 2 – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

This is a follow-up to a post from a month ago, How Can I Convince My Transplant Doctor to Refund My Money?

Hi i wrote to you in October about my bad hair transplant and i would like more advise from you because everyday i suffer from it. its making me hate my life ever since i had the procedure done. Here is the message that i wrote to you and you responded.

[note: see link above for full message and reply]

I would like to also add that when i tried to speak to the doctor he did not let me finish what i was saying. it was like he already knew what was on my heart and on purpose shut me up. Im not a cruel person so i did not argue back i just listened to all his rude remarks and hung up when he was done making me feel stupid. Every day i look at my hairline and it just hurts me deeply. I have spent over $7.000 and when i look at before and after pictures i still look the same. When i lift my hair up i can see that my left side looks like it has plugs and the right side is noticibly higher then the left. It has been 7 months and i still look like NW class 2 hairloss. im just tired of feeling depressed and feeling stupid. I dont know what to do anymore. im so frustrated with this. Im tired of waking up and falling asleep with the same though on my head. Im tired of seeing all the people in my college class with much better natural hairlines and feeling stupid that even after spending over $7000 i look worse then them. If theres anything you can do please help me

Now that you have waited the 7 months I suggested the last time you wrote to me, I would suggest that you get another opinion. If you can see me in Los Angeles or San Jose California, I will be able to render you an opinion and even offer to help you once I know what the problem is (in medical terms at the least so that I can frame the process). This does not seem like a comfortable problem you have, not just because of the lost money, but your perception of poor work. Call my office and let’s start off with a conversation. You can reach me at 800-NEW-HAIR (or 310-553-9113) and ask to speak with me (Dr. Rassman). Please reference this blog posting when you call. My heart goes out to you and I would like to see if I can help.

Miniaturized Hair Shape Under Microscope – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Hello Doctor,
For a while now I’ve wondered: does miniaturized hair have a conical shape when viewed under a microscope?

What prompts my question is the larger consideration of whether hair miniaturizes while a cycle is in process, or whether it miniaturizes from one anagen phase to the next.

Block Quote

I suspect that both factors are in play here. The increased hair count seen in 12 months clearly indicates a change from one cycle to another, but as I see changes in patients in an 8 month time frame when I examined the hair and observed less miniaturization, I would suspect that some increasing girth probably occurs as the hair grows out from the scalp.

Growing a Handlebar Moustache – Balding Blog

I have a decent moustache. A little on the thin side but decent. I have been letting it grow out for 5 years and I wax it. I love handlebar moustaches and I want a nice thick one instead. I have been trying to do research online but don’t see lots of information out there. I don’t know if anyone really near me does it or not. The phone pages only list baldness help. My hair on my head is thin but I keep it buzz cut anyway. Remember the movie Tombstone? I want a ’stache more like Kurt Russells and mine is really alot like Val Kilmers. Any suggestions? I guess I don’t know anything about this so I’m unsure of who to go to for the procedure and I don’t want to chance losing anything that I have.

Thank you.

A hair transplant is an ideal procedure for scars on the moustache area, but in your case, you already have a moustache and just want to make it thicker. If the problem with your moustache is the density of hair, more hair could be added with hair transplantation, but it would be scalp hair. We can not create thicker hair shafts, but if you have thin mustache hair that is about the same diameter as your scalp hair, then this might work for you. Hair densities on the scalp are probably at least twice the density of moustache or beard hair. A hair transplant simply moves hair from one area to another and as such, it should be relatively easy to double the density of your mustache hair. The anatomy and alignment of hair of the moustache is different than that of a traditional scalp hair transplant. If you decided to do this, you need to be seen by an experienced hair transplant surgeon and only then you will know if you are a good candidate for this procedure.
