You should see a dermatologist. There are many conditions that can cause such a bald spot, including alopecia areata, fungal infection, allergy, injury, stress, etc. Is the spot growing in size since you first noticed it?

In the News – Photographer’s Images of Alopecia – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Snippet from the article:

It’s a hair loss condition that often robs sufferers of their self-esteem and confidence. Now a photographer has taken this stunning gallery of images of people with alopecia (many with alopecia areata) to raise awareness about the condition.

Daniel Regan, 28, said he wanted to tackle an issue that is often ignored by the public.

Is It Genetic Hair Loss or a Mature Hairline? (with Photos) – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

I know my hairline has receded in the last few years, but I’m not sure if I’m showing signs of genetic hairloss or if it is a mature hairline. I’ve been to a dermatologist and a thricologist and neither seemed to take a serious look and just said it didn’t look to bad, but I wasn’t really convinced.

I am a 25 year old male. My dad is bald and probably started balding in his 20’s, my older half brother is bald and my two uncles on my mother’s side are bald. My mother’s father never went bald but had a high hairline, and my dad’s father started balding probably in his 50’s. I’ve realised that I’ve always had a fairly high hairline, and it has always been a bit higher on my right side. I can remember I used to part my fringe a certain way when I used to gel my hair when I was in my mid teens.

In terms of just measurements, my hairline corner (right side) is 1 inch above my wrinkled brow, and 2.5 inches above my eye brow. The middle of my hairline is 1 inch lower than that. The hairs in the corners of my hairline seem finer and less dense I think so I don’t know if that means it’s going to move up higher up.

Thanks again and thanks for the site, it’s very helpful. I wish I could stop by in person but unfortunately I’m on the other side of the Atlantic.

You sent a lot of photos, but I chose the above three that tend to show the best angles. Thanks for sending them.

It appears that you have a Norwood class 3V balding pattern (not a maturing hairline) and the frontal area appears to be thinning where you have hair. The crown is early in the balding process. The photos aren’t the crispest or in the best light, so it is difficult to really make any specific determination. You need to see a good dermatologist or hair transplant doctor to be evaluated. Medications like Propecia (finasteride) are the only way you may halt the progression of the hair loss.

Since you’re on the other side of the Atlantic, you can visit Dr. Bessam Farjo in London or Manchester. Or if you happen to be planning a trip out to Los Angeles, we’d be happy to see you.

In Around 5 Months, My Bald Spot at the Back of My Head Has Grown (with Photo) – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

I am 25 years of age and i am concerned about my bald spot. I noticed it about 4 or 5 months ago. At first it was the size of a dime and now its bigger than a half a dollar coin. I am worried about my bald spot and i don’t know what to do. I also do not have any family history of balding.

Is there any treatment for my balding spot? Help me

An examination by a good doctor is critical. The bald spot looks bare and I wonder about whether this could be alopecia areata, as part of the differential diagnosis to genetic balding. It could also be an infection of some sort. Get to a good dermatologist as the first step in your travel through this process.

2 Weeks After My 2800+ Graft Surgery, I Had Massive Shock Loss – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

hi, two weeks after a surgery with dr. rahal of 2846 grafts (888 1 hair, 1526 2-hairs, 429 3-hairs, and 3 4-hairs), i experienced a massive shock loss. it has been one month post surgery and i am very worried about even going to my original look, which at this point i would be happy with. i only take minoxidil, because of the side effects of finasteride.

do you see a lot of this shock loss from the pics as being temporary, because although i am thinning, i am not an entirely diffuse thinner, but lost everything. at this point would total of the 5239 hairs even be enough to fill in what i have lost? i should also note that the hairs that are remaining are ones from a previous surgery with ziering that was supposed to be around 2300 grafts, but i am not even entirely sure about his work.

thank you so much for your help and suggestions, greatly appreciated!

It is difficult to make many comments about your exact situation, because the before picture and the change in your hair length are confusing your situation. I will assume that you are young (under 30 years old). Were you afraid of possible side effects from finasteride, or did you actually experience them? Shock loss is common in young men after a hair transplant, unless the young man is protected with Propecia (finasteride). Prior to the appearance of this drug on the market, shock loss was a common problem for hair transplant surgeons. Since the use of finasteride, this type of report is relatively uncommon.

Shock loss usually appears in the first three months after a surgery, when it happens. I do not believe that the size (# of grafts) is related to the shock loss, as a hair transplant of any size can do it. Shock loss reflects your genetic timelines and often accelerates the timelines 1-3 years.

Hair Loss InformationI Stopped Taking Synthroid 2.5 Years Ago and I’m Still Having Female Hair Loss! – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

About 3 years ago (current age 39, female), I began having menstrual irregularities (excessive bleeding). Tests didn’t show any distinct hormonal/structural reasons, but I was under extreme stress. One doctor suggested I try Synthroid to decrease my TSH (it was normal – 3.6 – but I didn’t know better). Within 2 months of being on 50mcg of Synthroid, I began losing MASSIVE amounts of hair on my head (and most of my body). I’d never had hair loss before – in fact, I had a LOT of hair.

I immediately informed my doctor of this but she said my body would adjust. After 6 months of continued hair loss (and no improvement with my health otherwise), I stopped taking Synthroid. That was in October 2010. But my hair loss has NEVER stopped since and when I once had so much hair, I now have very thin, brittle hair that falls out by the handful daily. The loss looks diffuse, but the most visible parts are my sides and the nape of my neck. I have been to numerous endocrinologist/dermatologists/hair specialists and no one knows why this is continuing. I am not on any medications, and all my hormones look fine. My menstruation has also gone back to normal – so I don’t understand? I’d appreciate any input!

My hair is less than 50% of its original thickness and the scalp can easily be seen through the front and sides of my hair under regular light. I cannot go out without using Toppik, but it can easily be seen as there is very little hair to hide the fact that I’m wearing a cover-up. My hair texture has also changed DRASTICALLY to dry, brittle, and cobweb thin in areas.

It is not unusual that when a thyroid condition is fixed and properly regulated, that the hair does not return to it per-disease state. I wish I had good news to tell you, but honestly, only time will tell if your hair will regrow. As to your continued loss, I don’t have a clue. With female hair loss, there are so many possible causes, that suggesting what it could be via the web with no examination would be a complete guessing game.

I realize you’ve been to numerous doctors, but I’m not sure what help I could offer at this point. There is a list of common blood tests here that could possibly lead to a reason for your loss. But TAKE CAUTION: these tests may point to a possible source but may NOT provide a treatment or a cure. You need to speak to a doctor and come up with a Master Plan to treat the hair loss. Lab tests do not mean anything if you cannot do anything about the results.

Hair Loss InformationClass 7 Patient with One Surgery of 3072 Grafts 10 Years Ago (with Photos) – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

This is a Norwood class 7 patient who loves the hair he had transplanted a decade ago in a single procedure of 3072 grafts. He is using a comb-back styling technique.

After seeing him again, we decided to do one more 3000 graft surgery to fill in the crown. His entire bald area is huge, so even the next surgery will not give him a full head of hair. The solution we came up with is that we’ll follow-up after the next procedure with Scalp Micropigmentation to thicken its appearance. That will make a huge difference and this patient is thrilled with the idea. I will post some updated photos in about 12 months from now to show the transition.

Do You Think I Might Have DUPA? (with Photos) – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Hi,

I thought that I had diffused thinning for a while and recently someone pointed out that I might have DUPA instead; can you take a look at these pictures and tell me what type of hair loss I most likely have?

If this is DUPA, would it still be advisable for me to get FUE surgery? Lastly, in terms of treatments, I just wanted to mention that I’m currently on dutasteride and minoxidil.

Thanks

You need a proper examination of your scalp. DUPA (diffuse unpatterned alopecia) will show miniaturization of the hair around the sides and back (donor area) of your head. Miniaturization can only be seen under magnification and while I do thank you for sending photos, what you sent me does not produce enough value for me to even help you. It does appear that you have some patterned balding… and that is not DUPA.

I Had a Hair Transplant 3 Weeks Ago and Have Necrosis or an Infection! (with Photos) – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Hello dear doctor

It looks like something is going on, and it might be an infection, but I’m not sure I would call it a necrosis. I must continue to stress this point — follow up with your surgeon as soon as possible! This (and anywhere on the Internet) is not a place to receive personal medical advice or diagnosis.

Scalp necrosis (a loss of blood supply to an area of scalp) is highly unusual. In my own practice, I have never seen it (15,000 hair transplant procedures over 23 years). I have seen cases from some doctors who reported scalp necrosis in the middle of the head (where yours is) and it was caused by the use of large punches (the old days) too close together. An infection that started off locally could have extended the initial area to a large wound as you have, but good cultures of the wounds should be in your doctor’s hands by now.

The wound in the photo may be the result of tissue slough from an infection. I am limited to what I can do for you here. If you are in the area (Los Angeles), come see me. If the wound gets larger, you absolutely need cultures done to see if there is a difficult to treat infection. There are a variety of virulent ‘bugs’ that can cause it and some of these can make it worse.

Hair Loss InformationFemale Hair Loss Patient Immediately After One SMP Treatment (with Photos) – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

We’re always updating our Scalp MicroPigmentation (SMP) site with new patient before and after photos, but I thought I’d take the opportunity to post a patient here so BaldingBlog readers can see an example of the visual impact that occurs.

This is a female patient with thinning hair. You can see the immediate results after just one SMP treatment. Further SMP will be done for increased darkness and density.
