Hair Loss InformationDoes Transplanted Crown Hair Grow Slower Than Other Scalp Areas? – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Hello Dr. Rassman. I got a ht done just under 6 months ago and i’ve noticed that the crown has shown little to no growth while the top front half of my head has shown a significant amount of growth. Could it possibly be the crown is the last place that sees the new hair growth?? the difference between the front and crown is very drastic and looks as if no hair was even transplanted in the crown. Im on week 25 so should the new hair in the crown have grown by now or is still too early? also, i still have those little red dots on my crown area but nowhere else on my scalp.

thanks in advance

Little red dots on your recipient area may reflect folliculitis and this can, on occasion, kill the transplants if not treated in a timely manner. You need to discuss this with your surgeon as he/she has a vested interest in your outcome.

I have often seen differences in the rate of growth from front to back or right to left. I would not worry a great deal if this is a rate dependent variable, unless you do not see the results you expect by the 8th month. I would expect some growth in most patients by now, but again, see your surgeon and discuss your concerns.

Protecting Against Shock Hair Loss – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

I have researched that after the hair transplant surgery, there are some patients who are experiencing a common side effects which is Shock Loss. I would like to know if this is the fault of the surgeon during the incission? Is there a way to prevent the further trauma to avoid more hair loss after the transplant? I am thinking of having this procedure done, but very much concern of loosing more hairs after the hair transplant. Please educate me. Propecia is commonly prescribed to patients before the surgery, but do you have to take this drug for the entire life or the remaining hairs will soon fall out

Shock loss is a hair loss process that accelerates immediately after getting a hair transplant. It usually occurs in the first 4 months after the surgery. Generally, Propecia will protect against most post-surgical hair loss from shock and it should be taken for a period to discuss with your doctor. The longer you take it, the better, but as hair loss is a progressive process it will kick in again when you stop the drug.

I generally recommend for patients to stay on Propecia for 9 months minimum just to deal with the threat of the shock loss, but that is not a hard rule. Everything depends upon your examination and the relationship you build with your doctor. I generally think that if you are serious about preventing any loss, men with genetic loss are best treated long term (lifetime is long term) with Propecia (finasteride).

My Boyfriend’s Hair Transplant Didn’t Grow Back After Shaving His Head! – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Dear Dr. Rassman,
My boyfriend had a FUE operation using hair both from the back of his head and his chest (all together about 1200 follicular) to cover the toothbrush look of his previous punch graft operations on the frontal part of his head. After less than six months the result was so great that everybody was under the impression that with another operation or two on the crown part of his head he would have a 70 to 80 percent of his previous normal hair days look back.

Approximately eight months after the operation he completely shaved his head with a Gillette Fusion razor with the hope that his new and old hair may look thicker and more ready for the next operation, but to everybody’s surprise (not to mention his horror) only 40 to 50 percent of his newly transplanted hair has grown back (after two and half months now) and the look of his frontal head now can be described as balding with previous plugs being visible again. I would really appreciate your comment and/or advice on the matter.

RazorFUE is not a perfect technique and it has a higher failure rate than the standard strip surgery, as the follicular units are often stripped of fat at the bottom of the grafts. Also, body hair transplants do not work to my satisfaction, because body hair does not grow the way scalp hair does. Body hairs do not grow continuously like scalp hair, as it is in its resting phase much longer. That is why most doctors do not perform body hair transplants; it’s not because body hair transplant is difficult.

Aside from these generalizations, I would only be guessing as to what caused the hair to not regrow after shaving it. And providing a guess would not be fair to you, your boyfriend, and even the surgeon. He needs to go back to his surgeon and follow up with this issue.

Hair Loss InformationUsing Rogaine After a Hair Transplant – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Hi Dr. Rassman, I recently had a hair transplant at your facility, everythings going well, my question to you is, can i apply rogaine on my newly transplanted hair, I read that when you apply rogaine, the hairs fall out at first, and then it grows back, is that true? I’m afraid if I apply rogaine to the transplanted area, the hair’s will fall out and not grow back. Your response will be greatly appreciated.

I’d say to wait at least 7-10 days before using the Rogaine near the transplanted hairs. Using Rogaine Foam would likely be the best way to go about it, as it is easier to apply (requiring less rubbing on the area).

Hair Loss InformationI Can Only See 1% of My Grafts 5 Months After My Hair Transplant! – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Hi Dr Rassman
I had a hair transplant done 5 months ago by a board certified doctor with lots of experience. I recieved 1750 grafts (aprox 4300 hairs estimated). After 5 months it looks like maybe 43 new hairs have shown. The only difference between now and before the procedure, is that now I have a donor scar on the back of my head keeping me from shaving it all. I am very discouraged/upset by this.

In your experience, or to your knowledge, do some people not respond to hair transplants (the new hairs don’t ever grow)? If this is not reported as so, then does the length of time before ANY new hair shows ever take longer than 5 months? I realize it generally takes 9 months or so for the hair transplant to be fully realized, but I was told (and read) that by month 5 significant new growth should be visible. Your answers and info is much appreciated.

Thanks

Take a look at this patient and watch his hair grow over time. At 5 months after his single hair transplant procedure, he had some short hair growing… and by the 7th month it was styling length. Some people grow faster or slower (by about 2 months). Ask your doctor in another 2 months to judge if your hair growth met his expectations and match it to yours.

Staples vs Sutures – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Is there a difference between “internal sutures” and staples? Does one result in a less detectable scar?

Block Quote

Anything going through the skin produces a highway for bacteria to grow. Staples and sutures do just that, so bacteria can invade the body through the holes created by the needles, sutures, or threads, and through the use of stainless steel staples.

The final answers to your question relate to the opinions of doctors. I have waffled both ways in the many years of being a surgeon, and now I prefer staples over absorbable sutures. I don’t like leaving a foreign body like a suture in for very long and the absorbable suture is a foreign body. At least with staples or non-absorbable sutures, they can be removed by the surgeon when healing has occurred and wound strength builds enough to hold the wound edges together. At between 2-4 weeks, collagen production forms a lattice of ‘cable-like’ material that progressively gets laid down so that the wound will hold together. See Wikipedia for a better understanding of the various phases of wound healing. Some excellent videos covering wound healing can be found at Google Video.

Hair Loss InformationNo Growth 6 Months After My Hair Transplant! – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

I had a transplant done exactly 6 months ago. I was under the impression that between months 5 and 6 post-operation I would start to see the new grafts growing in. I have seen nothing, or very little. Does this mean it won’t grow in or something is wrong? I’m getting a little worried about it.

Block Quote

Why don’t you call your doctor who performed the surgery and ask for a follow up appointment? If I paid for something that didn’t turn out the way I thought it would, I’d contact the seller. Although you could apply that logic to buying a used car, this same principle goes for cosmetic surgery. If you were told one thing and it hasn’t happened, take charge and find out from the doctor!

Generally speaking, it takes on the average 4 months to see some growth, but it can take as long as 12 months. Everybody is different and not all surgeries are the same. You may be a late bloomer!

How Soon After FUE Can I Wear a Baseball Cap Without Being Careful? – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

CapHello Dr.

First of all thank you for having such an informative and helpful site. I wish other doctors would spend the time to have a site like this rather than having their sites full of promotional and marketing tricks. My questions is very simply.

I recently had ( 3 weeks ago ) a FUE procedure of 2600 fues to the zone 1 and zone 2. My question is… how soon can I start wearing a baseball cap/hat WITHOUT being extra careful with it. Meaning that the hat can touch the recipient area and also be a bit tight. My doctor say to wait a YEAR before I do this but it seems to be a bit too much. He said I can wear a hat after 30 days but making sure it is very loose and that it doesn’t touch the scalp. I find this very difficult to do given the locations where I received grafts.

I would like very much to know your opinion on this. Thank you!

Block Quote

Once the scabs are off, you can wear a hat or do anything that is reasonable. The donor area should be healed by this time. I’m not your doctor and I don’t know how your procedure was done, but that is the instructions I give my patients. You should double check with your surgeon, of course.

Hair Loss InformationGrowth After Hair Transplant – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

I had a hair transplant of 2010 grafts almost going on 5 months ago. My hair stylist tells me that the transplanted hair goes through a cycle and will fall out approx 3-4 months after the procedure then grows back in. Is this true? And why does it look really good in some light then in different light? When I go to work, the lights that are on there make me look like I had nothing done! I’ve been feeling very frustrated at this point.

Block Quote

LightAny hair (even non-transplanted hair) looks thinner under bright light or certain lighting conditions.

In general, transplanted hair falls out within the first month or so and new hairs start growing in 3 to 4 months later. I tell every patient to wait 7-8 months before judging the results. Patience is a virtue! I can’t tell you if your surgery was a success or not. You need to go back to your doctor and ask to see your before photos to compare for yourself. Also, ask your doctor his/her professional opinion on the matter. Whatever you decide to do, you will not know the results until 7-8 months after the transplant was done.
