Shock Loss in the Recipient Area – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

HI DR… I would like to know if there is shock loss after hair surgery what is your policy in solving the problem. thanks

I properly inform my patients of the risk, try to mitigate that risk, and am very supportive if it happens. I can not guarantee what will happen to the native hair that is there and which may react poorly to a hair transplant by undergoing shock loss. I have not had a case of shock loss for more than a year. I suspect it is because I prescribe finasteride on all those who are subject to that risk.

Cigarettes and Hair Transplantation – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

Done hair transplant 20 days ago. i have started smoking again but my doc advised against it. will smoking stop the growth of newly implanted grafts?

Smoking is bad for your health in general and it contributes to poor wound healing and poor circulation. If you are saying that you recently had a hair transplant and are now smoking, it might impact growth as the circulation does go down in the scalp with smoking. It is impossible to state that smoking will stop the growth of your implanted grafts, but why risk it? I can say that of those people who may have had less than targeted end-results, most were smokers. Maybe it is a good time to stop smoking.

Hair Loss Information2 Months Post-Operative Trichophytic Closure (with Photos) – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

I thought it would be nice to share a 2 month post surgical donor wound (still a bit light pink) with hair growing out of the wound from a trichophytic closure. By the 4th months, this wound will become virtually invisible.

Hair Loss InformationAny Danger to Grafts From Humidity 4 Days After Surgery? – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Hi Doctor,

i Had hair transplant surgery in Thailand. First day was a rest day. Second day i went to his clinic and washed my head. third and fourth day I went shopping in thailand and nowadays the weather is quite humid there.

My question is When I was shoping (3rd and 4th day after surgery I had light exercises and in the hot climate in Thailand I began to sweat because of the of humidity. SO i quickly reached the hotel room and cleaned my scalp with baby shampoo as the doctor advised. my question is , is there any danger to the grafts because of this humidity and sweating?

After the second day, your hair transplant grafts should have firmly set in and humidity/sweating should not affect them (even light exercise). For more on physical exercises after surgery, please see Resuming Physical Activities After Surgery.

Getting a Lot of Scalp Pimples 6 Months After Hair Transplant – Balding Blog

did second transplant 6 months ago.i seem to have alot of pimples and they are getting worse.is there any cure.tried with pills already but doesn’t work.thanks.age 27-sex male

Six months after a hair transplant should be enough time to end any cycle of pimples. I’m not sure what pills you might’ve taken to eliminate the scalp pimples, but I suggest you go back to your hair transplant surgeon and get yourself evaluated. You have a doctor, take him/her to task. Patient aftercare is important, and your doctor should be willing to answer your concerns.

Hair Loss InformationAre Pimples on Scalp After Transplant a Good Sign? – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

3.5 Weeks after a Hair Transplant, Is it normal to see pimples in the head so early on? I have maybe 3 or 4, one at the hairline and the rest in between my grafted area… I hear pimples on the head is a good sign that hair is trying to break through the surface, at almost 1 month post-op, is it possible to start hair regrowth? I do have fairly thick hair and my hair does grow fast elsewhere, just thinned in the front. I would be a 3 on the scale… Thanks!

Pimples are never a good sign. They do happen for a number of reasons after a hair transplant:

  1. Small cysts form from sebum build-up in the sebaceous gland that remains after the hair has shed.
  2. Small bits of remaining hair shaft are below the skin and are shed. Hair is a foreign body and as such is rejected through small cysts that come to the surface. These remnants of hair follicles or sebaceous glands may get infected and require antibiotics. Generally, they can be successfully treated with warm soaks. Be sure that these do not turn into folliculitis by visiting your doctor and establishing a good dialogue with him/her.
  3. In less than a good surgeon’s hands, cysts may reflect ‘piggybacking’ of one graft placed on top of another.

Almost a Month After Hair Transplant, My Hairs Look Broken – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Hi Doc, I am about 3.5 weeks removed from a 1400 Strip Hair Transplant. Alot of my hairs have “shed” and some have “broken”. When I say broken, it appears that stubs are left in my head and I have alot of stubs, and sometimes the hair (with the black bulb at the end) comes out of my head (“shed”)… Is this normal for transplanted hairs to break, is it because they die early on? The broken hairs look like hair you would see from a haircut (no bulb ends), and the remaining part looks like stubble in the head.

These are questions that you should discuss with the doctor who did your transplant and something that you should have been made aware of. From your brief description, it seems you are shedding your transplanted hair. This is normal. If you still feel there is something else going on, you should follow up with your doctor. I am assuming that these broken hairs reflect the transplanted hairs, not the natural hair in the general area where the transplant was done.

Had a Hair Transplant a Year Ago – Could I Just Be a Slow Grower? – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

I had a transplant a year ago. My question is that for 10 months I noticed almost no growth. Now though I’m starting to see fine baby hairs sprouting up. Is this growth? Am I just a slow grower? Or is it the propecia that I’ve started taking? The hairs are just beyond the hair line. Thank you for your time

After a hair transplant surgery, it may take 8 months of so to see 80% of the benefits of a hair transplant and up to a year or slightly more to see the full benefit of the surgery. This is absolutely something you should discuss with your hair transplant surgeon. A failure to grow would be evident if the growth to this point is most of what you had transplanted.

My Transplanted Areas Have Gotten Very Thin – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

i am a 32 year old male who has had 2 transplant surgeries that have been very successful. i have recently noticed the tranplanted areas have thinned quite a bit all within about a weeks time. could this be due to stress? i thought transplanted hair always remained. is it possible for the new growth to be affected by dht?
thank you

Something is wrong here. Transplanted hair does not usually fall out, even with stress. If you still have native hair in the area where you are reporting the loss and the hair was taken from the true donor rim (not above or below it), you most probably are losing the hair around the transplants. If that is the case, see a good doctor, get your hair mapped out for miniaturization and then you will know for sure what is happening to you. Propecia may stop the loss. The only reasonable explanation if you are really losing your transplanted hair is that the donor hair will be reacting the same way and this diagnosis will be very evident from mapping out your hair for miniaturization in the donor area (from where the hair was originally taken). 22 Year Old Just Had a Hair Transplant – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

I am 22 years old male and i have nearly lost all my hair keeping in mind its genetic in my family but i think it happened too quick to me. I started experiencing hairloss at about 17. now i have had a hair transplant done (at age 22). what will be the best thing i can do to prevent losing anymore hair?

One more thing is my transplant Dr told me that my transplanted hair will fall in 1 2 months and then regrow again, but the transplanted hair have already fallen (14 days after the surgery) with the dried out skin. please advise me on this thanks

You should be relating to your hair transplant surgeon face to face, not to an internet source like this for your reasonable and unanswered questions. The fallout you experienced is normal. Hair from the transplants should grow in 3-5 months.

To prevent hair loss, any 22 year old should be on Propecia. If your doctor did not put you on that drug (generic name is finasteride) then I might consider that to be malpractice (in the United States), as hair loss in a young man is progressive and often rapid after a hair transplant in someone of your age. For the man in his 20s who has a hair transplant and are not on that drug, the hair loss will almost always accelerate as you suggested that you have already experienced.

I am concerned about hair transplants at the age of 22. Did you seek out second opinion? What is the Master Plan for the long term? You and your doctor need to lock that plan into place, or you may feel abandoned if your hair loss progresses. Peace of mind is in proper planning and good communication between you and your doctor is as important as good surgery. Please arrange to meet with your doctor and get a long term plan from him/her that you can use as you get older. Find out what he expects will happen to you. You need to know that information, for it is critical to your future.
