A hair transplant is a significant decision that should not be taken lightly. Most importantly, you must realize that hair loss is a progressive process, so getting a hair transplant may not solve your hair loss problem down the road. When considering a hair transplant, you must know (1) the worst-case badling pattern that you might end up with, (2) your donor supply i.e. how many grafts do you have in your lifetime to cover future balding? (3) how many grafts are you going to use now? (4) when will you deplete your donor supply such that it, too, will become see-through or significantly bald? (5) what is the quality of your hair (individual hair thickness) in the donor area, hair character (curly vs straight), and lastly what is the color contrast between your hair and skin color? Many undertrained doctors, and especially technicians who mostly need help understanding what I am talking about (above), are the ones who are doing surgeries in Turkey for the money. Many of these surgical technician-run clinics (some have doctors who front the process) are destroying the donor area and failing on the hair transplants, damning their victims with (a) terrible results, (b) not enough donor supply left to fix the failed hair transplant and (c) balding or bald donor areas. I hope that those of you considering a hair transplant find a good surgeon who understands all of the above and can give you the confidence of a long-term Personalized Master Plan, which is what I have done for all of my surgical patients throughout my career.
Will Getting a Hair Transplant Ruin Your Chances of a Potential Cure Working on You?
I am one year after FUE and I believe I can’t have more grafts from the donor area
Yes, it does look like you have pushed your donor area and now have ‘donor site depletion’. I would have to examine you and measure your residual donor density. I see many such patients both in my office and over the internet. Scalpmicropigmentaiton is the best way to treat this and make it look good (https://scalpmicropigmentation.com/). If you are planning on doing more FUE grafts, make sure that you and your doctor discuss the risks of balding of the donor area.

Will I have to use Finasteride along with a hair transplant?
This is your call. Finasteride does two things for men in their 20s: (1) it reduces the shock loss that is very common in young man after a hair transplant and (2) and slows or stops the progressive nature of hair loss.

I Based My Hair Transplant Doctor Decision on Promotional Materials
i understand that you are under no obligation to answer my question, but i am a 27 year old male and just yesterday i had my first hair transplant of 1200 grafts. i went with [name removed], and made the huge mistake of basing my decision soley on their promotional material. now, everywhere i look says that theyre crooks and im going to wind up looking like a monster. could you provide any answers?
Today’s transplant by that particular medical group is much better than their internet reputation indicates. Even the groups which do large scale promotion are now performing much better work. Wait it out and have hope and faith. Next time, follow through with the type of investigation I outline in The Truth About Cheap Hair Transplants. You generally get what you will see when you meet the doctor’s patients and you should see enough of their patients (face to face) to get the type of quality work you need.
Will my hair grow back if I shave my head?
I was thinking about shaving my head but I heard that if I do, it will prevent my hair from growing back. Is this really true?
If your hair has significant miniaturization with hairs that are not growing at this time, then these hairs may not grow back if they are now growing now. Advanced miniaturization of the hairs is often the end stage of hair loss. Other parts of your scalp where there is not end stage miniaturization, will grow back normally. Hairs in the early phase of miniaturization, grow slower than those hairs that are not miniaturized.

I Chemically Relax My Own Hair and See Hair Loss
Hello. I am a 42 year old black female that is experiencing hair loss. I am wondering if this is due to me chemically relaxing my hair myself. I do have a low thyroid condition that I take medication for daily. Could this be contributing to my hair loss. It seems to be getting worse. I recently permed my hair but I burned my scalp pretty bad. Will my hair grow back? Could you give me any suggestions of products to use that might help? Thank you
Chemical damage and thyroid conditions can both contribute to hair loss, and there’s no way for me to try to pinpoint the cause via email. Try stopping the chemical use on your hair and give it a year or so to see if there is improvement. The hair could regrow, but it depends on the severity of the burn. At this point, all you can really do is wait it out to see.
Will Taking Finasteride Block the Formation of DHT and Cause Me to Become Feminized with More Estrogen?
The DHT blockers like Finasteride are what we call competitive inhibitors, and only block the action of DHT on the hair follicle. Significant amounts of the production of DHT will still continue.

I Didn’t Know Weaves and Wigs Would Make My Traction Alopecia Worse!
I’m a 38 yr old black female. My hair started thinning in the crown about 10 yrs ago. I started braiding it to keep out the chemicals. About 3 1/2 years ago I was diagnosed with traction alopecia. Had never heard of it before. I started wearing weaves and wigs to cover up the ugliness. I never realized that this would make my situation worse. Now the balding has spread to the top and front of my head. Is it too late for a hair transplant that would work. The hair on the sides and back is relatively thick, but it seems so unhealthy. At the rate I’m going I feel like I should just shave my head bald and call it a day. I feel so ugly. I did see a dermatogolist for the diagnosis, but I never got any advise on what I should do to help the situation. Can you recommend anyone to see on this side of the country??
If you are diagnosed with traction alopecia, you need to keep your hair short with no weaves and wigs. After stopping the insult, you should wait for at least six months and see if your hair regrows. In many cases, traction alopecia may cause permanent damage to the hair follicle and may not reversible. Repeating the evaluation of your hair after this period of time will show the areas of permanent hair loss. At that point, a hair transplant specialist can evaluate you for further treatment options if the hair failed to grow back. Then, if you are using a wig, be sure that it is converted to clips to prevent the transplants from developing traction alopecia.

Woman Balding All Over Scalp
(female) hi doctor, after reading lots of hair loss forums and websites i have found this to be the most reliable and informative for hair loss.
my question today is about my weird pattered hair loss which is identical to my mothers but less advanced, basically my entire scalp is thinning evenly effecting even the hair near my ears and back where you would call the permanent zone in a male. i had had this condition since ive been 18 and now at 23 its more or less the same i think. about one year ago i did something stupid and bought generic propecia from a website, which did nothing for my hairloss after 10 months so i quit, i am now reading into rogaine which sounds promising as it can even stimulate hair growth even in other parts of the body where DHT is not even an issue, since my hair loss I’m guessing is not caused by DHT could rogaine work for me?
Rogaine (minoxidil) is worth a try, but you should get a diagnosis first to rule out any medical causes of hair loss. It is probable that you are following your mother’s pattern. If you can, bring her into a good doctors office with you when you see your physician to get a diagnosis and a treatment protocol.
