10 weeks minoxidil and microneedling (photo)

When the hair is cut short, it is easier to see the benefits of microneedling plus minoxidil. This combination works well when hair loss is early.

I’m over 50 and my blood testosterone level is low. Will that reduce my hair loss?

As men get older, their testosterone often drops along with the DHT levels in their blood. That is why balding reduces. Actually, when DHT levels are the highest in your teens and early 20s, the impact of the DHT on genetic balding is highest also?. For women it works in the reverse because the high estrogen levels of fertile females, counter balances any androgen (testosterone is an androgen) her body produces and genetic balding it put at bay.

12 Days After Transplant And Hairs Haven’t Fallen Out Yet

First – thanks for a wonderful blog!

It’s been 12 days since the transplant procedure and while almost none of the transplanted hair have fallen out yet, much of the transplanted fat tissue (I assume) is still clinging in small beads to the hair. Is this the “crusting” that many people write about? Any suggestions as to how to remove it – or is it just a matter of time before it comes off.

Also curious is that the small hairs have not fallen out yet… assume this is normal and just be patient and wait for them to fall out? Seems like the key to this whole process is to get on with your life and check your head in 8 months!

The crusting by this time can be removed by washing and then with the hair wet for a good 10 minutes, layer conditioner on the crusts and let it sit there about 10 minutes. Then, gently with your finger tips, rub these crusts — you should see them fall out. There is little danger in losing the grafts at this stage in time as long as you are gentle. The little hairs will generally fall out between 10-25 days after the surgery.

I’m Concerned That I’ll Be in the Last Generation of Bald People

in reference to a quote at the end of this article:

Link: Baldness cure could be for sale in just two years

I am concerned that in the next two years they will come up with a drug that will retain hair, and I (25 yo male) will be the last generation of bald people. The rest of my life it won’t be normal to be bald…. urgh? do any of these ‘on the horizon’ cures actually regrow hair???

I wrote about the possibility of the baldness cure being just a couple years away here.

You’re assuming a lot to suggest that it won’t be normal to be bald for the rest of your life, and even then, there are options like Scalp MicroPigmentation (SMP), hair transplantation, and even medication, to make it so that you don’t appear bald. I expect that we’re more than just two years away from the cure being a reality, but research is ongoing. And even if balding is somehow completely eradicated for future generations, there will still be millions of men around the world that have hair loss, so I wouldn’t get too worked up about it being abnormal.

14 Year Old with Bald Spots

I am 14 years of age. I don’t know how many bald spots I have, but when my hair is wet, I notice quite a lot, especially on the spots where I gel my hair. When I gel my hair, I do notice hairs in the comb. You said it should grow back, but I’ve been waiting 6 months to a year, and no signs of regrowth. How long should it take? Is this normal?

Oh, yeah. 1 more thing. My cousin hit me with a baseball bat, and then there was a bump where I got hit. After my mom put some green oil (it’s an Asian thing, not sure what it’s called). Now there’s a bald spot there. Will it grow back?

These bald spots need to be evaluated by a good dermatologist. A fungal infection is the most common cause of such spots and there are other medical conditions that need to be evaluated as well. You don’t want to be your own doctor here.

The traumatic baseball bat type of injury has been know to produce temporary hair loss at the point of impact. It should grow back in under 6 months.

I’m Losing Hair at the Temples, Sides of the Head, and Nape of the Neck

I have dramatic hair loss these last three months. Also on sides and behind the head on the neck (not in donor area). Also having too much dandruff and also losing hair on the temple.

Can dupa cause so much dandruff? Can hair loss on sides be caused by aggressive MPB? Can any chemical or toxin cause DUPA by consuming it once? Thanks for answers!

Diffuse unpatterned alopecia (DUPA) is unrelated to dandruff. Male pattern baldness (MPB) does not include hair loss on the sides of the head. I don’t know that you even have DUPA. There is nothing I can tell you other than what you told me. You need to see a good doctor to give us an opportunity to make a diagnosis.

16 and panic about upcoming hair loss

I don’t know why I’m typing this, I’ll probably regret this in the morning, since I’m on vyvanse right now. I know you focus on transplants and your not a therapist but, I just want to write to someone. This hairloss fear is getting to me, I’m only 16 and I’m pretty sure I’m not going bald now but the predisposition in my family is so high, my dad AND my mums dad went full bald in their late 20’s that’s just a fucking double whammy, I always hear when people talk about baldness in their family (on Reddit, etc) and its always only one; dad, or mums dad, at least they have hope. What can I do?

At 16, I doubt that you are now losing hair. That may not be the case in the future, but worrying is not going to change anything. Speak with your parents about your fear. At some point if you feel that you might be starting the balding process (rarely before 18), then getting a HAIRCHECK test (https://baldingblog.com/haircheck-test-how-it-is-done-video/) might be the way to go, as this will tell you absolutely if you are losing hair, where and how much. Wait a couple of years before doing this.

I’m Seeing Extreme Body Hair Growth from Propecia!

Hi Dr. I have gone through your response for this thread:

now this is my situation. I am also taking finasteride 1mg for the past 15 months and am taking fin only not minox .also experiencing the body hair growth. Before taking fin i was having more hair in my body than any one in my family. and now fin is worsening the situation. Actually am happy for what fin is doing for my head. But the effect of it on my body, am fearing of being called a MONKEY MAN!!. By the way am indian aged 24. on norwood 2 with thinning on crown and forehead.

As stated in my previous post: “Propecia (finasteride) blocks DHT. DHT is known to be responsible for secondary male characteristics, such as body hair. At least in theory, if you block DHT you would have less body hair. I have heard and seen on several occasions patients stating they got less body hair after a year of taking Propecia.

Now you would be the 2nd person that has mentioned seeing more body hair as a direct result of Propecia. It’s interesting, but this can also be coincidence as well. As I indicated in the prior post, the increased body hair may also be due to the fact you are maturing into your secondary sex characteristics, since like the original poster you are also in your early 20s.

I’ve still yet to get any reports of this from one of my own patients, but I will make a note of your experience.

18 and my hairline is receding

I’m only 18 and just wondering if my hair looks like it’s starting to recede or not. I know I have my dads hairline but my dad is bald and that does creep in my head sometimes as he started balding in his 20s. Both my grandfathers have most of their hair. And my uncles on my moms side all mostly have their hair and my dad has no brothers. When I style or just do my hair, it’s never noticeable and I always get compliments on my hair and its thickness. So does it look like it’s receding or could this just be a normal hairline? It also bothers me that the right side of my hairline has a little more hair.

With your family history and some early frontal hair loss, you should be concerned about progressive hair loss. Your biggest enemy is progressive thinning leading to a balding pattern that is not evident at this point in time. The degree of thinning that you are experiencing suggests that you should see a doctor who most likely perform a Bulk Measurement of your hair to determine the degree of the thinning that you are presently having.

If the diagnosis is early genetic hair loss, the most common cause of hair loss in young men, then the best treatment is the drug Finasteride. This medication is highly effective in men of your age and may not only stop the hair loss but possibly reverse it. If you are developing a more advanced balding pattern, the best test to get is the Bulk Measurement. This will show, over a one-year time frame, how effective the treatment will be. Once you know this information, then you and your doctor need to develop a MASTER PLAN which will define what you need to do in the years to come.

Check out my video. In it I talk about donor hair supply and bulk measurements.

I’m Very Sensitive to Products with Alcohol, Like Rogaine Foam

Dr Rassman, is it possible for a person who is very sensitive to products containing alcohol even have problems with the Rogaine Foam. I stopped the foam because it was drying out my hair alot and I noticed my hair thinning more and falling out more. Even if I go a few days without using it my hair looks better. I never had itching or redness from it but my hair texture changed to a more haylike feeling. I used good conditioners too but my hair still was still too dry and the hair diameter was thinner. I have my hair professionally colored and it even strips the color of my hair near the roots. So basically is it possible for someone to have a negative result due to even a small amount of alcohol in the product. I also notice my face retains more fluid and my skin gets more acne when I use the foam or any type of minoxidil. Would that also be considered a negative reaction to minoxidil?

Rogaine Foam has alcohol in it, so if you do have a sensitivity it could be an issue. While the 2% minoxidil is alcohol based, the 5% minoxidil liquid is propylene glycol based (though check the ingredients on the packaging since it may still have some alchohol). You may consider trying the 5% as an alternative to the Foam. Alcohol does dry the hair out. If you’re retaining fluid in your face, that is a known negative side effect. I’d meet with a dermatologist about the acne.
