I am disappointed at one year (photo)

I had 2500 grafts done one year ago and the results are not what I expected. Will more hair grow if I wait another year?

At 12 months you now have 98+% of what you will end up with. I would not expect substantially more growth than what you presently have. If you had a competent and ethical doctor, go back to that doctor and discuss your disappointment. If I were the doctor, I would want you to be happy and would do my best to make it happen, even at my costs to redo the surgery.

Will Hair Grow Back When I Lose it From Stress and Diet Problems?

Will Hair Grow Back When I Lose it From Stress and Diet Problems?

anxiety

Sometimes yes and sometimes no is the answer. For those individuals who have genetic hair loss, these stress factors tend to accelerate a normal hair loss process which does not reverse once accelerated. In some people, a telogen effluvium starts which is reversible and in a few, this type of problem can be cyclical when hair loss and stress are related in non-genetic balding.

I am a sikh and want to have an FUE

My question is how soon can I wear my turban again?

After an FUE, the wounds are usually closed in under 5 days or so and all of the crusts are gone from the recipient area. As a Sikh patient, using a clean Turban at one week is reasonable as long as there are no crusts on the recipient area the the Turban is not too tightly wrapped. The problem you will have is a return of the traction alopecia if the Turban is tight

I Bleached My Hair at 15 Years Old and It’s Been Falling Out Since

(male)
I’m 17 and I’ve noticed that the hair on the top of my head has been thinning and falling out alot in the past two years. I strongly think that the problem was caused when I bleached my hair unprofessionally two years ago. After I bleached it and washed it off, I felt irritation and burning sensations on the scalp for about half an hour to an hour or so. What has happened to me and what can I do to prevent my hair loss? Also what products can I use to help?

Maybe the bleaching was coincidental to the natural genetic male pattern balding. Do you have a pattern to the thinning? In general, bleaching your hair doesn’t cause hair loss. If it did cause your hair loss, I wouldn’t expect it to reverse now that it has been 2 years since the insult happened. I don’t know of any products that will regrow hair that fell out from chemical damage.

I also can’t advise you without seeing you, or at least a set of good pictures.

Will My Urologist Tell Me to Stop Finasteride?

Going to see a Urologist next week, will he tell me to stop finasteride?

Hi Doctor. I have been on 1/4 proscar for over a year now with great success, no side effects, and great reqrowth and maintenance. I’m a 26 year old male and went to my hair loss doctor for my yearly check up a few weeks back and he and I were very happy with the way things are going. In the last 3 months however i have had 3 cases of hematospermia, passing blood in the semen accompanied with some minor pelvic pain. I however, have no other problems urinating so it’s clearly something to do with the prostate. My family GP gave me some antibiotics, which seemed to clear one episode and he referred me a urologist to get it checked out further. He mentioned that the fact i was on finasteride would have to be seriously looked at when I visit the urologist. I mentioned all of this to my hair loss doctor during my yearly consultation, now this guy is very ethical and has over 20 years in micro surgery and over 2000 patients my age on the drug. He told me that the finasteride had nothing to do with it.

In fairness to finasteride, I was on it for 10 months without a hitch before I started getting episodes of hematospermia. I’m just worried that the urologist may ask me to stop it as he clearly will not be concerned about male pattern baldness…and effectively lose the wonderful gains the drug has provided me.

In your experience have you ever encountered cases of hematospermia any more in patients on finasteride in my age group? Do you think it may have anything to do with it, what about prostate shrinkage?

Thank you so much and i hope you can help me on this, i really hold your opinion i this area in high regard.

Regards

People who are not on finasteride do develop hematospermia, so I would expect that people on the drug will be at the same risks. I doubt that the drug is contributing to the problem and would agree that finasteride should be continued. I would doubt that a urologist would ask you to stop this, considering the benefit you have achieved.

I Considered a Hair Transplant, But I Can’t Take Propecia

Hi Doc,

Thanks for such a wonderful site, it’s been very useful.

I’m 25 with thinning hair. I have taken propecia for couple of months but I have stopped it because of side effects. I have considered hair transplant but from what I read on your blog, you mentioned that it’ll be really bad to do hair transplant without taking propecia at the same time. So what are my options if I can’t take the drug, should I even consider transplant.

Thanks a lot.

I don’t think I’ve ever stated that it was bad to have a hair transplant if you are not taking Propecia. If you can find a BaldingBlog entry where I did please let me know.

I often advise patients to take Propecia to prevent possible shock hair loss. However this is after a personal face-to-face consult on an individual basis and after I make an assessment of what the possible long term balding pattern might be. Everybody is different and there are many patients that have hair transplants without taking Propecia, but there is some risk of acceleration of the hair loss without it. The degree of miniaturization will be proportional to the risk of shock loss. There are some 25 year olds who do not have a great deal of miniaturization and they will be a lower risk for shock loss than a person with extensive miniaturization. Maybe a short term use of Propecia to protect yourself from shock loss would be worth trying. If you are considering a hair transplant you should see a good hair transplant doctor to have all your questions answered in person. Remember, there are some absolutes and if you have a hair loss pattern indicating extensive balding is probable, then you must be able to walk that line with your doctor so that you can keep you hair and understand the risks as well.

I Don’t Know If My Hair Loss is Genetics or Chemical Burn from Relaxers

Dear Dr. Rassman,
I am 28 yrs old have been suffering from hair loss since I was about 22 years of age. I am about a norwood 3 right now. I had chemically relaxed my hair once when I was 18 and a second time when I was about 21, while suffering a minor burn from my second treatment. I have taken the hair DX test and I have been told that I have a moderate predisposition to male pattern baldness. Can my hair loss be due to a combination of both factors?

If it were solely due to the chemical relaxers, would I have lost my hair when the injury occurred and wouldn’t my hair loss be more diffuse? If it is due to the insult by chemical straightening, would the hair/hair follicles show the same progression of hair loss as if it were male pattern baldness? I can’t change the past, but I would just like to know if my chemical relaxer treatments have led to this.

Thank You

You have a complex story and it would likely require a complex examination. Without seeing you and examining you, I can not tell you the cause of your hair loss or what you can do about it. The HairDX test can tell you if you’ve got the genetic markers, but it won’t tell you if or when you’ll see those genes expressed.

See a good hair transplant doctor who cares about your welfare and then you will know more than you know now.
