Itchy Scalp and Female Hair Loss
I have had sudden hair loss in about a months time. I had thick curly hair my whole life now it’s half the volume and very thin. I’m 33yrs. old (female). i have lost a lot of weight recently and also been under a great deal of stress. i went to see the dr. and dermatologist they didn’t seem very concerned, but recommended biotin and rogaine for men. i also just started to feel itchy and tingly in the scalp. Is it due to the hair coming out or hair regrowth? This situation is making me more stressed out, and i’m not getting answers anywhere. some info and advice would be appreciated.

As I’ve said here before, there are many causes for hair loss. Be sure to look at the previous responses in the Female Hair Loss category for others in your situation. Stress and sudden weight loss can cause hair loss and would be at the top of my list for you. Itchy scalp can be from hair regrowth or from other factors, such as nervous disorders and stress which causes hair loss. Other causes for your hair loss and itching include imflammatory disease, psoriasis, alopecia areata, etc. Sometimes, a person can have an itchy scalp from lotions/creams which they put on their scalp. You need a blood work up to rule out hypothyroidism, anemia, and other reversible medical diseases.

A Bargain Hair Transplant? Not Quite! (with Photos)

I saw this patient in my office yesterday that was referred to me for assessment. This 38 year old fellow ( Class IV-V ), had a transplant 4 weeks ago in Ludhiana, India. He felt that the procedure didn’t go very well.
On examination the crown had been transplanted with 60 – 65 punch grafts that were 2-3 mm in diameter and the distance between grafts was 1 – 1.75 cm, very irregularly, across the crown. Peri-folliculitis was evident and residual crusting on some of the grafts. There was up to 7 hairs in some of the grafts. The grafts were removed via FUE from the occipital area. The procedure took 1 hour and he was told to return next month for a second session of the same. The cost – $500.00 for both sessions.
I have swabbed for C&S what I could, cleansed the scalp, started an antibiotic and suggested Propecia, with follow up in 1 week. He would like further sessions to the crown. He needed a proper consultation as to planning and the consequences of starting the crown in a 38 year old with certainly further thinning in the future. Further sessions at this point are unwise. I will be following up with him closely.
Dr. Cotterill has given me permission to repost these photos. It is unfortunate that people treat a hair transplant procedure as if they’re just getting a haircut. This is surgery! You want to do your research and know what you’re getting into. How could anyone recently get the old, ugly plugs of decades past? It’s disturbing on many levels. So he only spent $500 on 2 sessions to get this look. Now how much time and money will he have to spend to try to undo this foolish mistake? A bargain indeed.

I’ve Been Using Too Much Minoxidil and Have Chest Pains
I was using Minoxidil for over two years and never experienced any problems.However,lately I used it applying too much and not leaving 12hrs in between the applications.I developed side effects:chest pain and tightness.My question is how long those side effects will last and if I will be able to start using Minoxidil again?

With respect to chest pain and tightness, I would see your doctor or go immediately to your nearest emergency room. Your chest pain may not be related to a side effect, but a serious medical condition such as heart disease. While chest pain is an associated severe side effect of minoxidil use in some cases, this should be taken very seriously.

A Hair Breakthrough May Not Be The Breakthrough That it Seems To Be
Use of Nape and Peri-Auricular Hair by Follicular Unit Extraction to Create Soft Hairlines and Temples: My Experience With 128 PatientsBackground Hairlines and temples can look unnatural due to coarseness of the safe donor area of transplanted scalp hair. Although the thinner caliber of nape and peri-auricular (NPA) hair would be ideal to create softer hairlines, they have not been used mainly because of concerns that they are nonpermanent.
Objective We assessed the outcome of NPA hair transplanted to hairlines and temples in selected patients.
Methods During November 2006 to November 2011, follicular unit extraction (FUE) transplantation using NPA hair was conducted in 128 patients following a shave test involving the visual evaluation of hair density and caliber of shaved head donor areas. The test was used to determine permanent versus nonpermanent donor areas. A questionnaire was sent to patients to assess satisfaction with their restored hairlines, with a follow-up questionnaire sent to those who initially responded.
Results Three-quarters of patients are good candidates for use of NPA hair to the hairlines and temples based on the shave test. Of 128 patients transplanted, 71% responded and reported a mean overall satisfaction of 8.3 (scale, 1-10). Patients saw full hair coverage at the recipient area at a mean of 9.6 months after surgery. Nineteen patients reported lost grafts. Thirty-three patients responded to a second survey and reported a mean overall satisfaction of 8.5 at an average of 4.6 years after surgery; only 5 (15%) new instances of graft loss were reported.
Conclusions Soft, natural-looking hairlines can be created in select patients using NPA hair as a donor source by FUE hair transplantation.
These are just my (Dr. Rassmans’s) opinions (regarding the Press release which may be more exaggerated than he original publication as one reader rightfully points out):
Taking neck hair, which is often finer than scalp hair, has problems with it. These problems include:
(1) more prominent scarring occurs in the neck and the neck area is very visible so such scars will be detectable as punctate scars
(2) neck hair is often not permanent hair as scalp hair is, so if one transplants the frontal hairline with these finer hairs, they may disappear with age.
This is a warning to those who see this press release. They must know the risks associated with a neck hair donor area.

I’ve Lost Hair Since Starting Keppra (Epilepsy Medication)

I have lost my natural curl and half the amount of hair that I had as a side effect of Keppra. I would like to know since I have taken myself off it, will my hair grow back with the natural curl that I lost?
Hair loss is a known rare side effect of Keppra (levetiracetam), but I can’t say for sure if your hair will regrow now that you’ve taken yourself off of it. You’d have to wait out about a year to see if it regrows.
You were taking Keppra for an important medical reason (like seizures), and you should not be taking yourself off of medications without speaking to your doctor. I can’t even say for sure if Keppra was the cause of your hair loss.

Conclusions of article: Minoxidil is a common medication prescribed for treating hair loss-related problems. It provides remarkable benefits to patients with hair disorders. To date, the FDA has approved minoxidil only for AGA. However, minoxidil is used off-label for treating several hair disorders as well as increasing body hair growth. Although topical minoxidil is considered an effective and safe treatment option for various hair disorders, additional evidence-based data are needed for some applications.
Other mention: Salicylate and aspirin can inhibit sulfotransferase. A recent study showed that the follicular enzymatic activity decreased following 14 days of low-dose aspirin use. Thus, prior or concomitant use of aspirin decreases the clinical response to topical minoxidil.

Many people just don’t care and its not a matter of how much money they have. I Just Started Finasteride and Got Gynecomastia, Thoughts?
I just had a quick question. I took 1mg of finasteride for 2 weeks and noticed I was starting to develop gynecomastia. I immediate stopped taking finasteride and gyno has since went down. This was my only symptom. My question is, in theory, would taking only 0.25mg everyday give me a better chance of not developing gyno? I understand there’s about 60% DHT inhibition at 0.25mg. At 0.25mg, would I have less extra testosterone that would get converted to estrogen, and give me a better chance at not developing gyno? If this is a stupid way of thinking just to continue taking finasteride, please let me know. I’d appreciate your honesty!
Since it stopped quickly, you can try the lower dose and see. I always suggest that you clear everything with your doctor.
