Body Hair Transplants

Can you use body hair (like from my back to graft into my head??) All I have left is straight black hair. The brown reddish wavey hair is elsewhere on my body. What about if I want my once wavy hair back?

Does one consider using grafts from the other body areas such as pubic area hair?? As a former Physiology major and Chemist, this in theory seems possible considering the technology being used at the moment yes? Thanks — I’ve many questions, appreciate your bearing with me.

Hair can be transplanted from most parts of the body to other parts of the body. Some of the best work in this area was done by a Dr. Kim from Korea, who transplanted head hair to his leg as part of his PhD project where he tried to get more than one hair from one hair. He succeeded to transplant these hairs to his leg but failed to get more than an one for one yield.

Today, there is much human experimentation in moving hair from legs, abdomen, back, chest and beard to the scalp. It appears to work, but the question is one of value. Is the hair valuable enough to achieve the goals of the patient. How long will it last? How long will it take to grow? What are the growth cycles of these hairs when moved to the scalp or eyebrows? There are many unanswered questions and some answers are appearing to show that these types of transplants work.

All of these body hair transplants are done with the FUE technique. There is not a mystery as to how to do this, but the problems I see are more in the many unknowns for routine clinical use.

Multiple Sclerosis and Hair Loss?

(female)
I have noticed that my hair is breaking off. There are several pieces of hair that are only two inches long on the top of my head. I color my hair to cover the gray, but I am also on several medications. I was diagnosed with MS in 2003. Do you have any thoughts on what could be causing this?
Thank you.

Look at the medications that you are using for the cause of your hair loss. Some medications used in treatment of multiple sclerosis (like mitoxantrone) can cause mild hair loss. Speak with your doctor about them.

Both presidential candidates had hair surgeries

I know that Biden had hair transplants in the old days with ‘plugs’ but got these repaired some years ago so he looks normal now. Trump I know had a Scalp Reduction (cutting out the bald spot in his crown) but I am not sure if he also had hair transplants. The scalp reduction left him with a scar down the middle of his head. I think that he wears a high end hair piece now.

My beard was transplanted perpendicular rather than normal!

Im considering another beard transplant but am worried it will leave scars on my face – can this be fixed to look more natural? will it leave scars on my face if the hair angles get re implanted? Alternatively im also considering Laser HR on my face but im worried there will be noticeable scars when fully removed? advice please?

You can remove each beard hair and replace it in the proper position. This shouldn’t scar the face if performed with a small punch. A laser would also work but then you would waste the hair

Breezula

I have a lot of faith in Breezula. I think people really understimate the fact that Breezula not only protects hair follicles against DHT, but also against testosterone. That in itself is massive news. I understand there’s a lot of skeptics because of the trials. At 6 months it performed better than finasteride and at 12 it did worse. I would be interested in what u/wrassman thinks on this. Personally, I do not believe in the upregulation of DHT theory. I also do not believe that hair follicles would develop resistance to this medicine, either. There’s nothing in a hair follicle that would permit that. Anyways, it’ll be interesting to see.

Breezula is an antiandrogen presently undergoing tests on a Third level of clinical trial testing. There is great promise here from what I read about this medication and the best part it doesn’t seem to get into the body when it is applied to the skin. I don’t have experience with this drug.

My Daughter’s Hair Hasn’t Been Chemically Processed for Years and Now It’s Breaking

My daughter is 15, she has not had a perm in 3 years or more. Just recently her hair began breaking off on the ends and around the edges of her scalp. She uses biosilk shampoo and conditioner and she does flat iron and blow dry her hair at least 3 or four times weekly. What can we do to stop the breakage and promote the growth of her hair? We are african american.

The use of the flat iron could still contribute to damage, but this is best managed by a good hair stylist with lots of experience with African hair types.

Burn patient need eyebrow transplant (photo)

An eyebrow transplant will work miracles for this man as it will draw away attention to the burn and frame his face nicely. I picked this photo up on Reddit

My Doctor Diagnosed Me with MPB Right Away

Hey Doctor Rassman, I have a question regarding early MPB. I’m 19 years old and my hair recently started thinning at the hairline and my temples have very slightly receded. It’s not at a stage where the untrained eye would notice, and my friends who I’ve pointed it out to think I’m crazy, to give you a picture of how early it is right now. But my dermatologist diagnosed it as early stage MPB right away when I asked her about it and she prescribed me propecia. So my question is:

Does thinning/receding at such an early age usually indicate a more serious case of balding? Does it generally mean more aggressive balding as well as a eventual higher NW# pattern? I know it can all be so very random sometimes, but I’m just wondering what the average case comparable to mine usually ends up at, if there is such a thing.

Starting age of your hair loss doesn’t indicate degree of future balding. You could start early and get to your pattern quickly… then stop losing hair. It’s different for each person, obviously.

Can a higher dose of finasteride sometimes work better than the 1mg dose?

I have seen a few patients who have responded better to finasteride at a higher dose, suggesting that that particular individual just needed a higher dose. If you understand Bell Curves, the 1mg dose determined as the ideal dose by Merck in their original studies used a Bell Curve to make that determination. We can sit on either side of that Bell Curve as we find the ideal dose of finasteride for us.

My Doctor Said SMP Alone Would be a Mistake For My Norwood 6 Pattern

Hey Dr Rassman. I hope your doing well.

I had a consultation with my hair doctor. At which i brought up the proposition of a combined SMP and hair transplant procedure. His response was the 2 would compliment each other well but just SMP alone would be a mistake. What are your thoughts does SMP look more natural when done in conjunction with hair transplantation?

And lastly i recall reading about a young man who won the American Dream contest a few years back. You performed surgery on him as my balding pattern would be close to his (ill prolly wind up developing into a class 6)and our ages are close or were im 23 now(i have been on finasreide since 20) i am interested to see his results. Thank you.

Each person is a separate case. I can not tell you that Scalp MicroPigmentation (SMP) plus hair transplants is better than either alone. I make each judgment when I understand the patient, when I see how fast the hair loss process is, and when I can then build a Master Plan. Generally, the hair transplant is the way I start, adding SMP on only a minority of patients.

As for the winner of the American Dream Vote television show (see here if you don’t remember the single episode that aired before it was canceled), the last update photos we had to publish were from 2009 and can be found here.
