How Long From Healthy Hair to Miniaturization?

Hi Doctor,

I know everyone is genetically different in their balding patterns, speed, etc. but how long does it generally take for miniaturization to turn a healthy hair folicle into one that can’t grow any hair? Weeks? Months? Thanks!

You are right — everyone is different. The hair you see on top of your head reflects about 1/2 inch per month of growth. Miniaturization can take months or possibly even years to appear.

Which is Better — Taking 0.5mg Finasteride Daily or 1mg Every other Day?

Hi Doc,
Is there a difference in cutting fin in half and taking .5mgs a day compared to taking 1mg every other day?

I read somewhere that 0.5mg is 80% as effective as a full 1mg dose of finasteride. I can not tell you from direct experience, though. Am I safe to assume that you are halving the dose to deal with some side effect like decrease libido? If there is no side effects at the 1mg dose, stay on it (studies have shown the best treatment for your hair loss will happen at 1mg).

If you are only going to take 0.5mg daily or 1mg every other day, then I’d say that the 0.5mg a day may be better, but frankly that is just a guess.

How long will microneedling hair last?

I’m a 30 year old guy with diffuse thinning hair. I started to take finasteride about 3 years ago and to be honest I’m not certain if it did anything for me as I didn’t have any regrowth during that time. However I’ve been able to greatly regrow a lot of my hair through microneedling over the last 2 years. I wanted to get your take on wether the hair I regrew with microneedling could be permanent? I reduced my finasteride dosage from 7 mg per week to about 3mg per week about 6 months ago and haven’t lost any ground. Your educated guess? Thank you!

I don’t believe that anyone knows for sure about how long microneedling induced hair will last. I am guessing it will last about one hair cycle (Max) which in a young man could be 3 years.

Why Are Bald Spots Appearing Randomly In My Beard?

I want t know why I have random bald spots on my face. I always had a healthy beard, and for the past two or three months the areas have increased not dereased. What is possibly causing this, and how can I fix the problem? I miss my beard.

There are many things that can cause hair loss like you describe, including ringworm (a fungus), alopecia areata (an autoimmune disease), etc. See a good dermatologist for a diagnosis.

How many grafts do I need? (Photo)

I am unsure if you have a Class 6 or 7 pattern balding pattern from the photo you supplied to me. Still, in any event, to set realistic expectations, you need to know the following: (1) donor density, (2) donor hair mass, (3) the capabilities of your surgical team, (4) what your Master Plan is for going forward after the hair transplant (may be more than a single hair transplant). There are many limitations for men with fine hair and low donor densities. YOU need to understand these elements, or you might be disappointed with the results.

Why Did Dr. Rassman Become Interested in Hair Loss?

What inspired DR.Rassman to become interested in hair loss related issues and how to tackle them?

There are a lot of men who would consider you and all the other scientists regarding hair to be their knight’s in shining armor

Thank you. I am humbled. In all of the fields of medicine I have practiced — heart surgery, orthopedic surgery, gynecology, cancer, and vascular surgery — the field of hair is the happiest of all. The patients are helped, grateful, and at times their lives are transformed. I am an agent of that transformation and that makes me a very lucky doctor. In my former practices, I did it all and felt that I lacked the challenges of new things with the more traditional surgeries. The hair transplant industry was generally doing terrible work and I saw opportunity to change it, invent new technologies, push the envelope and create something that was never done before, so I began doing hair transplants to meet those personal needs after doing the appropriate research. If you look at my CV, you will see what I did and what I published in medical journals, radically changing the field.

90% of my practice is made up of male patients, and these men want their youthful look back. I carry out the steps to get them what they want. Men are delightful patients and the bonding I have with everyone is wonderful. For the 10% of women I work with, there is a special relationship, because most doctors don’t want to deal with their hair loss problems. It takes great patience and time to diagnose female hair loss and the time to educate them makes them happy for the experience with me. About 80% of the women I see are not surgical candidates, but I take the time to get to know each woman on a one-on-one basis.

How many grafts would I need? (photo)

You have a Class 4A balding pattern and I would think that depending upon your hair thickness (fine, medium or coarse) you might take between 2,000-3,000 grafts (more grafts with finer hair).

Why Do Some Men Lose Hair Much Later in Life?

doctor,
since we know DHT is a cause of hairloss, why do some people start showing sings of male pattern baldness later in life? I know a few family friends pople who have had extremely thick beautiful hair norwood 1, with no signs of balding in their 40’s and late 40’s. then in their 50’s they started get thin and crown balding. if dht is the cause then i’m sure these guys had dht in their body in there 20’s, 30’s, and 40’s. why all of a sudden in there 50’s the dht decided to choke the follicles?

Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) is the cause of hair loss when it is associated with the genetic disposition of male pattern baldness. The genes that cause hair loss are preprogrammed and often express themselves at different ages.

For example, some men and women get grey hair in their 20’s, whereas some never do. Most men with the balding gene will go bald in their 20’s and 30’s, but there are always exceptions to the rule as you pointed out.

How Often Are Mice Studies Actually Successful?

I see that mice are often used in studies for medicine before they are tested on humans such as this article posted recently on this site in regards to balding (here). I am not sure if anyone would have this information readily available, but how often is medicine that is successful in mice also successful in humans? I am curious to a percentage of a success/fail rate.

Thank you for your very informative site!

Animals such as mice, dogs, monkeys, etc are often used in medicine. In general, it may take many years for the study to leap from animal trials to human trials. With respect to the success and failure rates of such studies ever making to human trials, I would wildly guess that there are way more failures than successes… but I don’t have precise figures to satisfy your curiosity.

Why don’t hair transplants fall out like the hair you lost?

If most hairless is due to increased testosterone output can someone explain how a hair transplant saves your hair? Wouldn’t you just lose it again due to hormonal issues?

Genetic balding never impacts the hair around the back and side of your head (donor hair) so a hair transplant moves this hair and put it where you lost it. The donor hair never react to DHT so it will grow in its new location for your lifetime.
