I’m 15 and I have all the same problems. My hair has been thick all my life, up until this year. I have lost a significant amount of hair, and it is noticeable when I look back at pictures. It has been falling out in large clumps when I shower, brush, or straighten it (which I don’t do very often due to damage). I went to the doctor and he says it is normal and that it will pass, but I feel like it won’t stop. I use castor oil on my roots. I feel like I take very good care of my hair because my mom is a hair dresser and she has taught me about hair care. So, I don’t know what is wrong.
If you are not happy with the doctor you visited, see another doctor. There is no reason to live like this.
If you disease is under control and you understand the risks associated with having a hair transplant, then the answer is yes. There could be an increased risk of hair rejection if the autoimmune disease impacts the skin which can happen anytime after the surgery, even years out

I am 34 and in the music business. Like the email from your model, I am in a position where I wish to look like I’m in my late 20 for a few more years-Its more business then vanity. My hair looks how it should for 34 (I am a type two), never the less, I wish to have the sides of the front filled in a bit (as well as the hariline reconstructed).
Everything I read implies that this is a bad idea, because my hairline will look too low when I am 45. If I brought my hairline back down to where it was 5 years ago, would it look stupid in 15 years?
Clearly, you understand this subject, so I will not repeat much of what I have said in previous blog entries. First, Bill Clinton has the same hairline today that he had when he was 12 years old. His hairline does not look weird to me. It just reflects a small number of Caucasians who keep their juvenile hairlines into adulthood. IF you are not balding and you’re examined throughout each area of your scalp, looking for miniaturization and none is found, then it is not unreasonable to assume that you would be in the 55% of the population that does not bald at all. Putting back the frontal hairline will just make you look like Bill Clinton, Ronald Reagan, actor Andy Garcia, and many others like them. They looked good with their low hairlines. On the other hand, if you should start to bald, a discussion with your doctor needs to lay out a worst case scenario for you to consider along with the statistical possibility that this might happen.
Just turned 18 and having a lot of receding in the hairline and some thinning on the crown. All the males on my dads side of the family are bald and most the males on my moms side are bald also so i feel like MPB is inevitable just sucks that it started this early! But i am experiencing scalp pain on my crown just wondering if its normal or not
Scalp pain does not come from male patterned balding. Psychological pain is different

I began using fin (1mg) today and want to avoid sexual side effects. Do you recommend starting out by taking it only a few times a week then progressively taking it more often until it’s 1mg per day? I saw you’re comment saying that this is a reasonable strategy to avoid side effects
Generally, since the risk of sexual side effects is less than 4%, it is best start at a full dose. If you are the 1:25 people, then change to the routine I referenced in a previous post.

I am a 29 year old male who began taking Rogaine 4 years ago with some strong results. Feeling that the Rogaine was beginning to lose the battle, I eventually switched to Propecia and experienced rapid loss of my rogaine hair. Panicked, I got back on the Rogaine along with the Propecia, which worked great (even better than my first rogaine experience) for a few months. Now, out of nowhere, I’m noticing significant hair shedding, and I’m confused as to why this is happening. Any ideas? The only thing I can think of is missing a week or two of Rogaine about one month ago.
There may be factors involved other than just Rogaine or Propecia. A good medical history and physical exam including a miniaturization study would be helpful. I would suspect missing a week or two of Rogaine should not have a significant effect unless you are extremely sensitive and dependent upon the medication.
Hi Dr,
In school we studied how MPB is autosomal and sex influenced, not X-linked. I also read that balding is mixed penetrance. Does this mean there is a possibility that an individual can get a mixture of hair/balding, from various relatives? For example if ones father has no hair loss but his maternal grandfather does. Thanks for your time.
You are correct. You can inherit balding from either family lines and the genes may not express in your father or mother, but it may express in one or both of their parents. You could be a victim of these genes when you are old enough.
I’m 40, male and have always had a very health head of hair. I am in good health. In the last 3 or 4 months my hair has started to fall out (pretty much all over my head) but primarily on the entire top of my head. Does hair loss not usually start at a younger age? The loss has been pretty significant and I’m fearful that it will be all gone in the next few months. What can I do?
I have heard that a high fever (had one a few months ago) could have an impact.
Also, my scalp has been itchy – Nizoral has not helped.
My grandfather and great grandfather (mothers side) were partially bald.
Thank you
Assuming that the hair loss is very short-term (it may not really be that way), then for a man with short-term hair loss, Propecia has a good chance of reversing it. I believe that this is the case on a man of any age. Your bout of high fever could have been a precipitating cause. The causes of hair loss in most men are:
The fever, if severe, is a real stress producer.
