I am trying to find out if I have enough hair to be a good candidate for a hair transplant. How many grafts do I have total?

Close to making a decision about a transplant, just unsure about whether my donor area might be too thin. I have always had messy/forward hair and would like to keep this style, is this possible with a HT? In most results I’ve seen, the hair seems to be placed facing upwards.

See the photo below. Left Box has 33 hairs and 16 hair groups = 2.1 hairs per Follicular Unit. The Right box has 38 hairs and 18 groups = 2.1 hairs per Follicular Unit. Both of these man have an average hair count reflecting about 110,000 total head hairs and a donor supply equal to about 6-7000 grafts in their lifetime. I purchased this from Amazon to do this photography: Xenvo Pro Lens Kit for iPhone, Samsung……….

Will miniaturized hairs moved to the donor area become normal?

Just out of curiosity, has some experiment been done to move a few miniaturizing grafts over from the top of the head, to the safe zone? To prove that the hair is the issue, not the scalp. I know that hairs from the safe zone can survive on the balding area, so technically the scalp should not be the issue. But who knows, maybe those miniaturizing hairs will survive just fine in the safe zone.

Imagine moving miniaturizing hairs down to the side and moving hair in the safe zone up. Don’t think it would be too difficult test.Just out of curiosity, has some experiment been done to move a few miniaturizing grafts over from the top of the head, to the safe zone? I don’t think that you understand that it is the hair follicles that carry the genetics, not the area where they are placed. I often tell my patients that if you put a donor hair on the end of your nose, it would grow to pony tail length. So using your example, take a miniaturized hair and place it either on the end of the nose or in the donor area, it will still die out according to its genetic clock.

Ran out of Dutasteride for 5 days. What Is My Risk For Not Taking It?

Dutasteride has a long tissue fixation period lasting a good month, so missing a dose for 5 days is not an issue. Also note that the blood half life for dutasteride is 6 days, which means that half of it was in your blood when you stopped taking it. For the few men when I prescribed dutasteride, I advise taking it just twice a week because the half life is so long.

Will Propecia Thicken the Hairline?, Follow-Up

I sent you the question which you titled “Will Propecia Thicken the Hairline“.

I don’t have a good digital camera so I’m unable to take reliable pictures for you but I think I can help color the situation with more detail. As I mentioned earlier I’m 25 years old and have a Norwood 1.5 – 2 hairline with thinning in the area around the hairline of 2 -3 cm. The worst area is due north of my temples and isn’t a usually area to lose if your hairline is just maturing. My father is a Norwood 5 and has been since his mid 30’s. The thinning the crown area and diffuse thinning in the hairline indicate to me that I will progress like my father considering my age. I’ve been on propecia for 7 months and it has stopped my hairloss in the vertex and possible slowed the thinning in the front, although as you know it’s difficult to assess even if you are going to a doctor regularly. Taken that propecia is effective in me is it reasonable to think that I will keep the hair behind my hairline given that it hasn’t been significantly effected my MPB? I don’t expect propecia will help thicken the hair in the hairline as it hasn’t done so yet but would it be acceptable to expect I will keep most of the hair that hasn’t been effected my MPB yet? I hope there is more clarity here.

There are no guarantees that Propecia will stop the progression of hair loss. In fact, the studies on the medication show that the loss continues, starting possibly at a higher level of growth on the curves accounting for hair gains seen. Please refer to this graph (click it to see full size), which was made available by Propecia’s manufacturer, Merck. Note that the green curve (those on Propecia) has a less significant downward slope than the gray curve (the control group). This suggests to me that beyond the 5th year that the hair counts will not be droping as fast in the treated group (I wish the actual data had been made available to me).

Will weight lifting accelerate my hair loss?

I don’t know if I am just super conscious but I started to lift again about 6 weeks ago and it seems like there is much more hair in the shower falling out than before, isn’t it true that lifting will release more DHT or something? or am I just panicking

Wight lifting without taking any medications or supplements, will not cause an increase in hair loss. In fact, it may reduce enough of your stress to take the stress off of the hair loss.

I don’t trust my doctor actually took out 3000 grafts (photo)

If you have doubt about the grafts you received, go back and speak with your doctor and ask him for a copy of the count sheet which is part of the surgical record. Something must have happened that you lost trust with your doctor, so I would suggest that you speak directly with him to get to the root of the mistrust. The photos look about right for 3000 FUE grafts

Woman Suing Procter & Gamble Over Hair Loss

Many people seem to find a way to make a bundle in our litigious society. There is no doubt that hair dyes can cause problems such as skin allergy in some people, burns from improper applications of the dyes, etc. Television has many soap opera presentations of such litigations. A good company like P&G should have adequate disclosures on the products to cover the individual risks of particular patients. $12 million is a lot of money. The legal costs to pursuing such a case is high and for P&G, the cost is higher just to build and present a defense. Many times, companies like P&G will pay off the pursuers just to avoid the legal costs and internal management costs for nuisance cases. The lawyers that take on such battles know that, so this is like a game of Russian Roulette with money as the bullet in the chamber. As clearly stated in the article, “Once Ross’ firm determined the extent of Mack’s injuries, more formal negotiations began.

I got 2800 hairs and found the experience bad

just got a hair transplant in the UK. Met the doctors on the day due to distance to clinic. i was informed my crown couldn’t be transplanted to which was difference to our email correspondence. After a short chat the dr., he drew what would be my new hair line in pen on my forehead. I asked for it to be lower in the temples to give the youthful look and they assured me they would transplant hairs to the very bottom of the drawn line which would achieve this. I took their advice after being assured it would be to the bottom of the line and went ahead with the procedure, it was straight forward and they were very professional – lasted around 4 1/2 hours. After the procedure i wasn’t shown the results by the team but had to check myself in the bathroom on the way out. My head was rather bloody and slightly swollen so it was hard to judge at this point. it has now been 4 days and things have settled but I am worried that the hairline doesn’t come down far enough at the temples and that it is noticeably squint from the front.

I also took short video during the procedure and have since noted that the hairline drawn for me before the procedure is not the same as the one used during the procedure which is slightly above the former. I have contacted the clinic on two separate occasions to ask for photos taken which they responded to but have ignored both my questions about the number of hairs/grafts actually used on the day. They have informed me it was roughly 2800 hairs, can anyone guess if this looks right from the photo provided. not sure how to add more than one for the changing hairline drawn.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

This doesn’t sound like a good experience. we make it a point to make the experience fantastic confirmed by all of our patients comment on Yelp and Realself. We treat every patient like royalty and complete dedication to the patient’s needs. Communication is key, of course. Your complaints are reflective of poor communications on the physician side, but the transplant looks ok. 2800 hairs, maybe, but most doctors don’t count hairs but grafts. I would imagine that you had 1400 grafts. The hairline looks ok also. After it has grown out, if you don’t like the hairline you are given or anything is wrong, it can be improved to meet your needs. Good luck.

Women in the Military Lost Hair After Iraq Deployment

Hi!

I thought after 8 years, after being in the army and deploying to Mosul, Iraq. Me and my battle buddy were some of the only women to still be losing our hair. I’m now 32 and that happened when i was 23. My hair has almost completely fallen out. I now have to wear wigs probably for the rest of my life and I’m fighting the VA for some kind of acknowledgement and compensation that this is happening to military women after being in Iraq.

I have seen specialist many thing i was exposed to something but don’t know what so they call it Alopecia. But I know its something more, its time this has finally come out. Theres other women with the same problem. So soon the VA will have to pay us for this. Thanks

Alopecia is just a generic term for hair loss, so that doesn’t exactly pinpoint what is causing the loss.

I honestly do not know how being in combat would contribute to hair loss for this long. If there is extreme stress, one can argue that could be causing the hair loss… but that would apply both to men and women, and it would be reversible (unless it kick-started a genetic process that would’ve occurred anyway).

Many women who are not in the military or in combat have diffuse hair loss, and sometimes it may be due to genetic causes or to stress. In your case, you’ve been experiencing the loss for 9 years, so I’d expect the stress-induced loss would’ve regrown by now. I’m stumped on this one.
